It worked so well that last time

Those of us old enough to have been around in the Reagan years know the name Elliot Abrams.

He was Reagan’s Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs in the early 1980s and later Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs.

In those positions, Abrams not only helped Oliver North with the guns for hostages debacle known as the Iran-Contra Affair when Reagan, who said he would never negotiate with terrorists for hostages, in finding a way around the Boland Amendment that prohibited further funding of the Contras by our government, had arms sold to Iran to use the proceeds to fund the Contras in Nicaragua, but also hid information from congress about the massacre of about 1,000 men, women, and children by U.S.-trained El Salvadorian forces.

When reports of the El Mozote massacre began appearing in U.S. media, Abrams told a Senate committee that they were not credible, and that the reports were being misused by the guerrillas fighting the U.S. backed military.

Fake news.

The Salvadoran military already had a bad image when it came to human rights, and because it was supporting them, the Reagan Administration needed to improve that image, s oit was important to overlook and deny the massacre.

This task fell to Abrams, Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, who promoted the immoral and illegal triangulation of war crimes, i.e. arms to Iran, money to Oliver North’s hidden coffer, then to the Contras, and who hid massacres as he also helped cover up atrocities committed by the military forces of U.S.-backed governments in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

If these countries sound familiar, they are the ones from which people are no fleeing and who Trump calls rapists, murderers, gang members, and drug dealers so that we will support his treatment of them at our Southern Border.

We left their countries a humanitarian and political mess, and Elliot Abrams played a huge role in that.

During the investigation of the Iran-Contra Affair, the Independent Counsel at the time had prepared multiple felony counts against Abrams, but he was never indicted because he cooperated with the IC and entered into a plea agreement where he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of withholding information from Congress for which he got a $50 fine, probation for two years, and 100 hours of community service.

If this seems a little light considering the deaths from U.S. backed wars supported by money illegally obtained and the massacre of civilians, he was pardoned by President George HW Bush in December 1992, and served as pro-Iraq War, pro-Venezuela coup adviser to George Bush.

He is basically a war criminal who got off easy for his crimes.

Now he has been appointed to direct all aspects of the American campaign to replace Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Who better to deal with the politics of a country to the south of us than someone who helped create the mess in Central America.

As Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who said

“Elliott will be a true asset to our mission to help the Venezuelan people fully restore democracy and prosperity to their country.”

He did such a bang up job in Central America.

As for Abrams, he has said about his appointment,

“This crisis in Venezuela is deep and difficult and dangerous, and I can’t wait to get to work on it.”

Elliot Abrams is a war criminal.

Reversing his usual procedure, instead of choosing someone to work for him who will eventually get indited for some crime, Trump picked someone who had pleaded guilty to war crimes.

He knows the best people.
