So, where was He?
It seems every time there is a school shooting, the weakly informed and those who have a particular agenda immediately claim that school shootings happen because God has been locked out of the school house.
Reality is that God has not been locked out, but those with an agenda that pushes their religious beliefs on others have been limited in the degree to which they can do that.
I taught at a high school in one school district where the Southern Baptists were given free rein to enter the building while other religions had restrictions.
Youth ministers were allowed to stand by the cafeteria doors handing out Baptist literature and advertisements for church events and organizations, while other religions were first required to try get often denied permission for a limited presence, and were then restricted as to what they could offer and where.
Students could pray whenever they felt the need, just not in a way that disrupted the classroom or school activities, and they certainly could not force their prayers on others.
As I walked by the Prayer at the Pole gathering one time, one of the students shouted over that they were going to pray for me. I politely asked them not to. They did anyway.
Then teachers were directed over the P.A. by a vice-principal to turn on the televisions in our classrooms where he then ran a video recording of the kids praying and him preaching.
I told my students it was inappropriate, especially if they had chosen not to attend the event, and turned the television off. No one in my classroom complained.

The God-is-locked-out-of-school thing is just an attempt to ignore the real causes that may be difficult to address in favor of a convenient and expedient way to push a particular brand of religion.
Bearing false witness seems to be one of those Commandments that can be easily ignored for convenience by those who claim the Bible is inerrant, and none of it can be ignored.

I spent quite a few years in a state that, although it wasn’t one during the Civil War, likes to claim the confederacy as its heritage.
When the removal of the Stars and Bars from public property gained popularity recently, this state, like most of the actual Southern States of the Confederacy, objected to this because it was an integral part of its heritage.
South Carolina was very strong in its claim that the Stars and Bars was a very important part of its heritage.
One thing about these Southern states that they share in common is the repeated threat of secession and anti-federal government bloviating every time things that come from Washington DC do not sit well with them, things like desegregation, stricter gun control, or marriage equality.
The state I was in refused to accept the Affordable Care Act and any funds it would bring to the state because, well, no one is going to tell them they have to take care of the health of their citizens.
The Tea Party and its misused Gadsden flag, as well as the Stars and Bars come out any time they feel their sovereignty is under attack.
They claim they are their own master, and the federal government needs to keep its distance.
This is all well and good until you realize that these anti-federal government states get more back in federal money than they pay into federal taxes.

Mississippi gets $3.07 in federal funding for every dollar paid in income taxes.
Then you have Louisiana at $1.37; Alabama at $2.46; and Kentucky at $2.18.
That’s because states like New Jersey, Nevada, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Illinois, Delaware, California, New York, and Colorado get less than a dollar back.
They condemn people on welfare while their states get welfare from the other states, and their people in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina, and Georgia lead the country in SNAP benefits.
While claiming their healthy economy is the work of their local government’s fiscal responsibility, they seem too quick to overlook the amount of federal tax money they get, and the number of military bases within their borders that are responsible for the life of many of the towns whose whole economy is dependent on that military presence.

Racial injustice on a grand scale, poverty, poor health, and weak education, and wanting money from the very government they claim to reject.
As the United States we should be looking out for the general Welfare of all our citizens, all of them regardless of personal biases, not turning our backs on some when convenient, and then demanding what we have denied others because it hits home.
The future will show if those who demand help for South Carolina now will take the necessary steps to reduce the chance of future, preventable disasters, and then help others in their time of need, or will they come up with excuses to avoid doing this.
And, if they will cut the theatrics when it comes to the federal government while taking and then demanding its money.

The House GOP has been having hearings and giving speeches to defund Planned Parenthood because they bought into a video that has been shown to have been heavily and selectively edited to misrepresent Planned Parenthood as a dealer in dead baby parts, and they have refused to accept that.

An Ohio court has upheld the suspension of a 12-year-old black boy from a private Catholic school, St. Gabriel Consolidated, for staring at a white girl at school during a staring contest.
In a note he wrote about the incident the unidentified Black kid has said, “I never knew she was scared because she was laughing. I understand I done the wrong thing that will never happen again. I will start to think before I do so I am not in this situation.”
But as the kid’s mother pointed out, “The same girl that accused my son of this act of perception of intimidation, aggressively poured milk on someone else’s lunch. When she did that there was no penalties for that. She received nothing for that”.
The school’s defense is that “The principal is the final recourse in all disciplinary matters and may waive any and all rules at his/her discretion for just cause.”
Yeah, a school suspension is not the same as a riot, a murder, or a lynching, but the attitude is sill there.

A GLBT History Month challenge
Today, October 1, is the first day of Gay History Month.
Yes, I know over the years its name has morphed into Gay and Lesbian History Month, GLBT History Month, LGBT History Month, LGBTQQIA History Month, and is slowly becoming LGBTQQIAMOTRELETTERS History Month, but Gay is a lot easier to type (I use two fingers and have to look at the keys), and if you put a letter in the wrong order or miss one, people lose the message and argue about the typing, so for my convenience and as a tip to History (It began after Stonewall as the Gay Liberation Front after all), I will stick to the ease of three letters.
But be assured, everyone who needs to be is included.
I have a challenge for this month.
I challenge everyone reading this to read at least one book about Gay History.
I don’t mean a book that discusses whether it’s a choice or DNA; whether it was condemned in the Bible or only in the translations; should there be equal rights or whether rights are optional and up to the personal beliefs of others. I mean a book about some event or person who contributed to society who happened to be covered by any of the ever increasing letters.
Perhaps in investigating which book to read, you may find that there were more important Gay people than you ever knew.

You will be surprised how much history you pass by as you bar hop in a Gay entertainment district.
You may also find that as you feel the world is a difficult place and you are having it rough, these older people had it rougher and didn’t give up.
So, there’s the challenge.
