The boomerang snark

It is very embarrassing when a snarky jibe actually gets turned around to skewer the person making it.

How embarrassing when the standard “I know you are, but what am I” results in the target of the attempted cleverness responding chapter and verse with facts and anecdotes informing you exactly what you are.

In the Republican world of “Yeah, but”, where no one attempts to counter any charge with facts but, instead, brings up other people’s irrelevant actions, when responding to the near universal condemnation of the Trumpcare plan, the official Twitter account of the Republican Party begged Hillary Clinton for her plan to fix Obamacare.

If you ignore the sound bites and the selective reports about the failure of Obamacare, you will see that when it was first passed, those responsible for it said that the ACA would, over time, need some fine tuning.

Rather than repeal and replace the whole thing, it has been recommended that the ACA be examined so that those parts that needed adjustment would be adjusted, while those things that don’t need any adjustment could be left alone.

But the GOP had tried for 7 years to repeal and replace, and when they got control over the White House and both Houses of Congress it became obvious they had actually done nothing about the replace part although they had taken over 55 votes on the repeal.

In response to the criticism and to deflect people’s attention away from this, the GOP tried to make Hillary Clinton look bad by sending an official tweet asking,

“”Where’s your plan, @HillaryClinton?”

Her response was to invoke reality.

The Nyah, Nyah moment was crushed when Hillary Clinton responded that her plan was where it had always been, on her campaign website.

“Right here. Includes radical provisions like how not to kick 23 mil ppl off their coverage. Feel free to run w/it.”

Either, while attacking her during the campaign, the GOP never bothered to check out her website, or they somehow simply forgot.

This is what the GOP challenged Hillary to come up with and which has been available since September 2015.

As president, Hillary will:

  • Defend and expand the Affordable Care Act, which covers 20 million people. Hillary will stand up to Republican-led attacks on this landmark law—and build on its success to bring the promise of affordable health care to more people and make a “public option” possible. She will also support letting people over 55 years old buy into Medicare.
  • Bring down out-of-pocket costs like copays and deductibles. American families are being squeezed by rising out-of-pocket health care costs. Hillary believes that workers should share in slower growth of national health care spending through lower costs.
  • Reduce the cost of prescription drugs. Prescription drug spending accelerated from 2.5 percent in 2013 to 12.6 percent in 2014. It’s no wonder that almost three-quarters of Americans believe prescription drug costs are unreasonable. Hillary believes we need to demand lower drug costs for hardworking families and seniors.
  • Protect consumers from unjustified prescription drug price increases from companies that market long-standing, life-saving treatments and face little or no competition. Hillary’s plan includes new enforcement tools that make drug alternatives available and increase competition, broaden emergency access to high-quality treatments from developed countries with strong safety standards, and hold drug companies accountable for unjustified price increases with new penalties.
  • Fight for health insurance for the lowest-income Americans in every state by incentivizing states to expand Medicaid—and make enrollment through Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act easier.
  • Expand access to affordable health care to families regardless of immigration status. Hillary will expand access to affordable health care to families regardless of immigration status by allowing families to buy health insurance on the health exchanges regardless of their immigration status.
  • Expand access to rural Americans, who often have difficulty finding quality, affordable health care. Hillary will explore cost-effective ways to make more health care providers eligible for telehealth reimbursement under Medicare and other programs, including federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics.
  • Defend access to reproductive health care. Hillary will work to ensure that all women have access to preventive care, affordable contraception, and safe and legal abortion.
  • Double funding for community health centers, and support the healthcare workforce: As part of her comprehensive health care agenda, Hillary is committed to doubling the funding for primary-care services at community health centers over the next decade. Hillary also supports President Obama’s call for a near tripling of the size of the National Health Service Corps.

Better cake next time

During the Florida summit with Xi Jinping in April at Mar-a-Lago, Trump was so thrilled that the Chinese president, with only a little chocolate cake and lobbing a few missiles into Syria,  agreed to work on the North Korea issue, that he held back on attacking Chinese trade practices, even though he went ballistic over them during the presidential campaign.

Sort of the same way he backed down on that wall business when he was face to face with the Mexican president.

But now the man who said,

“There’s a beauty to making a great deal. It’s my canvas. And I like painting it,”

has suggested he is running out of patience with China’s modest steps to pressure North Korea.

China was supposed to be playing a stronger role.

That was the deal, the work of the artist’s hand anyway.

But now that the real world of China’s trade with North Korea and the benefit from that have entered the world as Trump likes to imagine it, which is not the way it actually is, he may have to impose new quotas or tariffs on steel imports for national security reasons.

He may have to fine tune his fantastic deal and admit that there is more to deal making on the global scale than just saying how you want things.

It works that way with those who work for him because they need the job and love the money being a sycophant can bring, but foreign heads of state are not his employees.

There may be a need for a little fine tuning of earlier deals and the making of new ones at the G20.

The Environmentalist in Chief

On December 28, 2016, President Obama designated Bears Ears a National Monument. The 1.35 million-acre monument in southeastern Utah includes sacred to the region’s Native American people It also has a number of natural wonders, one of which, the twin buttes from which the area takes its name.

The Hopi, Navajo, Uintah & Ouray Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, and Zuni people have traditionally used the land for its important food, firewood, and medicinal resources. Their tribal leaders had formed an Inter-Tribal Coalition to advocate for federally protected status for the site, and had written to president Obama in October 2015, saying in part,

“The continuity of indigenous traditional medicine is in peril, as long as lands like the Bears Ears are not protected”.

In additional to the tribal concerns, since 2007 the National Trust had been advocating for the protection of the Southwestern area of Utah from looting, vandalism, and oil and gas development, and in 2014 added Bears Ears to its National Treasures program.

The National Trust added Bears Ears to its list of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America, and the president of the Trust, Stephanie K. Meeks, submitted testimony to the United States House Committee on Natural Resources.

All this, and the Trust’s letter to President Obama which was signed by 17 other preservation, conservation, and archaeology organizations, led to the designation of National Monument.

However, Utah’s Congressional delegation strongly opposed the national monument designation, and the state legislature passed a resolution on February 3, 2017, signed by Gov. Gary Herbert, asking President Trump to overturn President Obama’s action.

A bipartisan Conservation in the West poll conducted in December 2016 and January 2017 showed that Utahns favor keeping Bears Ears National Monument by a 15-point margin.

Unlike President Obama who saw beauty in the land an respected the spiritual traditions of  Native Americans regarding ancestral lands, Donald Trump sees profits for his friend with interests in drilling and mining, and the sacred land as impediments to them.

The status of Bears Ears is in Limbo at the moment, but the presidential track record, and that of members of his cabinet when it comes to environment vs profits as exemplified by the Dakota Pipeline, does not give much assurance that the homes of cliff dwellers will not have to be viewed through the lattice of oil rigs.

Yelling at the TV is not activism

When someone says they are now finally becoming active in politics and helping to get candidates elected because they do not like where the country is, I wonder if they realize that the mess they are reacting to was allowed to become that mess partially because they did nothing to prevent it or to get someone in office who might have done the right thing.

When someone tells me they don’t get involved actively in helping candidates or attending the meetings where their ideas could at least be heard because no one listens any way, they remind me of people who claim they never played the lottery because they have never won.

When someone who has been historically inactive while constantly criticizing those who have at least tried to get the right thing done and now claim they are motivated because in the past others have failed them, as if the active people were somehow working for them as they sat back, I lose all respect for the opinion they expect me to accept merely because they expressed it.

During the opening decade of this century, the “aughts”, the owner and writer of GAYOKC.COM, an Oklahoma City based online GLBT news blog, organized a yearly event called “The State of the Community” at which those individuals and organizations who had fought the previous 12 months to bring about GLBT equality would sum up what had been attempted and how that attempt worked out, or didn’t, and what they intended to do during the coming year.

Most people do not realize that the majority of progress in the fight for GLBT equality does not begin with a donation accepting, national organization, but, rather, an individual who acts where he or she sees the need.

As a result, advocates in most cases are unpaid volunteers whose work benefits others, most of whom they will never meet, and their action is aided by other like-minded volunteers to a greater or lesser degree.

Such was my case when advocating for GLBT students in Oklahoma City.

I am of an age that was in those years familiar with Straight and Gay men and women, bisexual men and women, and, because I had a neighbor in Boston who rented a floor in the brownstone next to mine in the South End, and with whom I had spoken often as we sat on the front steps of my building or hers, I had learned much about Transgender people, and living in Oklahoma had become familiar with Two Spirited People. I was advocating for the inclusion of the words “sexual orientation”, and later “gender identity” as well, in school district policies, assuming that they were inclusive words, inclusive enough to encompass any type of orientation that I might learn about later but was unknown to me at the time.

During the summation of my efforts at the “State of the Community” gathering, I interchanged the word “Gay” with the letters “GLBT”, as that was simpler than listing all the categories in full, after explaining to the audience that I would probably settle on Gay as it was the quickest label, and in doing so I was not leaving anyone out, but just using the shortest descriptive.

In spite of at least half a dozen superintendents, changes in School Board members, a bevy of reprimands, multiple appearances before the Board by many people, at least one connected death, possibly two, some rather strange behavior on the part of administrators, including “Family” members, and some of the most far fetch arguments in opposition, some progress was being made.

After I was done, a hand shot up, and when called on by the moderator a young person lectured me that I was failing at what I was attempting and I was not as inclusive as I pretended to be, after all, I may have said “GLBT” and “sexual orientation”, but I was doing nothing for the group this young person belonged to. I hadn’t once mentioned “Inter-sexed”.

The accusation was that I was not doing my job as I should have been doing.

I first had to explain that I had been advocating for a number of years for something I thought was a no brainer, was easily accessible as I was known in the community, and had spoken at the Young Gay and Lesbian Youth Alliance and other gatherings on a number of occasions, so anyone with a concern had had ample opportunity to speak with me and make suggestions, offer advice, or inform me of anything with which I was not familiar. I then explained that I was not a paid employee who as expected or required to represent everybody especially if I was not aware of a particular group’s existence as I was of an age and all where I, too, was expanding my knowledge of various orientations. I have since learned about non-binary, gender fluid, and gender nonconformity, but at that time those were new and emerging categories that I needed to be educated on.

I further explained that “sexual orientation” was, to me anyway, inclusive, and no one had, up until that point brought up “inter-sexed, and perhaps the person could educate me on the subject.

However, it has been observed that in most of the patients, their life is influenced seriously by long term ED. but the use of buy viagra without rx for treatment of ED has been well documented. The researchers remarked that taking a sildenafil citrate pill is quite cialis stores simple and efficient to cure impotency immediately. I also suggested that, and here I will use a pronoun and having been a teacher for many years I will use the one that would match this person’s appearance at that moment, he could be very helpful in my understanding so that I could broaden my view, and that perhaps, to help in the advocacy, attend the occasional gatherings those of us approaching the school board would hold about how best to get things done and be part of the process.

He refused because I had already ignored his group, so what good would involvement be anyway, and I never saw him again anywhere after that. And worse, no one elf identified as inter-sexed ever spke to me.

I have to assume he was pleased that he was covered under “gender identity” when that as added to school district policy. but I never found out.

This, to me, i indicative of a major problem.

People sit and watch others trying to influence politics, and in spite of having multiple opportunities to be involved, find excuses to sit back and  watch, prepared, however to criticize those who are at least attempting to get things done.

Recently I was told by someone that we progressives needed to get it together for the 2020 presidential elections, and that progressives had to come up with a viable platform, but when I reminded this person that we also need to pay attention to the 2018 mid terms, I was told that he had written them off because he did not believe progressives would have it together by then. I asked if he had attended any of the numerous progressive gatherings in the area, but he was content to explain he had lost any hope in party politics, so, no.

It is people like this who are like those who sit at home yelling at their TV sets during some sporting event as if they can influence the game, and then yell at the coach and players for not listening.

If you are not involved, you give up any right to complain.

And, if you have the opportunity to be involved but choose not to, you have absolutely no right to evaluate the the performance of those who are at least trying to get things done.

I will be honeat. I have no time or respect for these people.

It IS a Sanctuary City

(Recently I was at a rally against hate in New Bedford MA.

A reporter from the local newspaper saw this sign I was carrying and offered the friendly suggestion that it be changed to "Make New Bedford a Sanctuary City" because it wasn't one yet.
I explained to him that it actually was a Sanctuary City and had been so since its founding as is evidenced by its history.
I referred to a Massachusetts law passed in 1843 and still on the books. He was not aware of that and asked if I could supply that information which I gladly did as soon as I got home and looked up two previous blogs in which I dealt with the topic of New Bedford as a Sanctuary City and the Massachusetts law.
I combined and edited those two blogs and what follows is what I sent to him.

For many this will be repetition, but it is worth the reminding)

The movement to make a place like New Bedford a Sanctuary City has been relying on having the city council enact an ordinance to that effect.

However, since from its founding by Quakers and then throughout most of the 19th Century the city of New Bedford was influenced by the beliefs and attitudes of that particular sect and unconsciously many of its beliefs have become embedded in the spirit of the city, I thought an alternate approach would be to research if in the 19th century, in the days before the abolition of slavery, the city of New Bedford had any law on the books supporting aid to fugitive slaves, or, as the practice was wide spread, any ordinance to stop it.

Before it was enacted, there was some wiggle room in New Bedford when it came to fugitive slaves, but with the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law that was lost. You were expected by Washington to either obey the federal law, or ignore it at your legal peril.

Prior to the law’s passage, New Bedford was one of the terminal cities of the Underground Rail Road, and it is estimated that prior to its passage there were about 400 fugitive slaves living in the city that had a total Black population of just over 1,000.

Many of the fugitive slaves were at one point housed in the homes of prominent citizens like Thomas Arnold and William Rotch.

By 1840, there was only on average two men of color on each whaling voyage, which meant the majority of the city’s black population worked where they lived on land and saw no need to further escape to the sea.

When the Fugitive Slave Law passed, many escaping slaves only used New Bedford as a stopping off point until passage to the towns established in Canada by escaped slaves could be arranged. And since any Black person could have been rounded up by Southern bounty hunters, those who did not feel safe also moved further north.

I found that during the time fugitive slaves were in New Bedford, even though their protection was an unlawful act, there was no formal ordinance one way or the other that dealt with ignoring the federal law, nor any ordinance, or even action taken, against those who ignored it.

In the early months of 1854 a Norfolk, Virginia, newspaper reported that slaves had been escaping from that port city so regularly as to be a daily occurrence. The suspicion was that their escape was aided and abetted by the ships coming from and returning to New Bedford.

One slave owner, Major Hodsdon, was so perturbed by his loss of slaves that he traveled to Boston to retain a lawyer and to have the Massachusetts Attorney General write to Deputy Marhall Hathaway of New Bedford advising him to keep an eye out for any of Hodsdon’s property.

Although the Attorney General’s order to Hathaway to assist Hodsdon went against the 1843 State law of Massachusetts guaranteeing equality and rights to escaped slaves [General laws: Part 1:Title XV: Section 102. Which states “(a) All persons within the commonwealth, regardless of sex, race, color, creed or national origin, shall have, except as is otherwise provided or permitted by law, the same rights enjoyed by white male citizens, to make and enforce contracts, to inherit, purchase, to lease, sell, hold and convey real and personal property, to sue, be parties, give evidence, and to the full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of persons and property, and shall be subject to like punishment, pains, penalties, taxes, licenses, and exactions of every kind, and to no other] , it was in accordance with the more recent federal Fugitive Slave Law which mandated that local law enforcement had to cooperate in the recapture of runaways.

This law is still on the books

When Hathaway failed to comply, Hodsdon and some other slave owners came to New Bedford to get the job done themselves.

Hathaway informed Hodsdon that he had seen the runaways that he and the others were looking for, but they had left since he saw them. He even gave them the address of a house where he claimed other Black men who knew them lived and could probably help, but that house was actually unoccupied.

Not only did the grapevine spread the word why Hodsdon was in town, but pastors had informed their flocks from the pulpits.

Hodsdon was the target of the Liberty Hall bell that was rung by Rodney French who was never arrested for interfering with the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law on the occasion of Hodsdon’s arrival, nor was Deputy Marshall Hathaway ever disciplined for ignoring the order from the Attorney General.

The practice in New Bedford was to follow the 1843 state law, and, because of the city’s commitment to human equality, ignore the Fugitive Slave law.

The result was that the South began boycotting New Bedford merchants because they were instrumental in aiding and protecting fugitive slaves.

Although the South claimed that the Civil War was fought in defense of states’ rights and not to end slavery, they opposed New Bedford’s supporting the Massachusetts state right over the federal law the South had brought about.

The people’s treatment of the fugitive slaves was obviously based on a firmly held religious belief of the equality of man and the universal citizenship in the world, so to tell a city like New Bedford that it should not remain a sanctuary city is to trample on the religious freedom of its citizens by suppressing or ignoring the city’s firmly held religious belief of equality borne out in practice.
