WHO?

I went to a high school in the 1960s that was run by a religious order of priests and brothers that had been founded in Italy, Turin to be exact.

We had to take Latin for four years, and along with grammar and vocabulary, we also learned a lot of the history of Rome not only from books, but from the many Italians who taught at the school and visitors from the order’s home base in Italy, many of whom had spent much of their youth in Rome.

So, I would have to admit, we were very familiar with Rome, and in the four years at the school we read not only writings about Rome, we read the first hand sources in the original Latin.

We read in Caesar’s own words that Gaul was divide in three parts; that Cicero had lost patience with Cataline; and we sang of the arms and men along with Virgil.

But nowhere did we run across any account of the United States having been an ally of Rome at any time from the Etruscans to the Visigoth raids and the fall of Rome.

So when Trump claimed,

“The United States and Italy are bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage dating back thousands of years to ancient Rome,”

I clapped my palms on both my facial cheeks and exclaimed,

“Ma che cosa!”

Or as our allies from 2,000 years ago would have said.

“quid est hoc?”

Now, granted, if we ignore Trump’s penchant to show his lack of knowledge of history and his word and thought salads exemplified by his October 21 appearance with his cabinet and set aside experience, we can parse his statement to see he may not have meant we were allies, but, rather, certain beliefs, the legal system, governmental structures etc. were inspired by Rome.

But the thing is that words flow out of his mouth and rarely express a complete thought or a complete sentence, and we are left the task of figuring out what he meant.

Why should he express himself precisely and with clarity if all he has to do is throw a dictionary at the crowd and it is left up to them to choose the right words.

Wouldn’t it be nice if he said what he means with the appropriate words and sentences rather than relying on all of us to solve the word jumble?
