Included in the event were about 80 angel families, people who have lost loved ones at the hands of what the sheriff calls “criminal illegal aliens” because that makes them sound more threatening.  

Now, I don’t want it to seem that I am diminishing the loss experienced by those who lost a son or daughter to someone from another country, but I also do not think it is right to diminish the loss of those whose offspring were taken by a domestic murderer.

Both losses are the same, and neither gets extra points because of who the murderer was or where they came from. If one group is considered angels because of their loved one’s having been murdered, everyone in that position should be considered angels.

When Black people protested the too quick killings of young Black men by the police while White men doing worse at the time police arrived to deal with an incident were spoken to and taken into custody, and chose the slogan “Black Lives Matter”, the response was that “All Lives Matter”.

Wouldn’t that apply in cases where the killer was anyone, domestic or immigrant?

Does the value of the victims’ lives and the degree of the families’ loss depend on who killed them?

To the sheriff it does if he can use that artificial difference to push his bigotry by promoting a negative image of his target group.

Recently, a short distance from where I live, a young man was shot. Do we have to wait to see where the victim and the shooter came from before we decide whether this was a bad thing for the family?

And, while he claims he is keeping the community safe, and as he claims that “criminal illegal aliens” are the major danger to Bristol County, the only examples he cites to justify this claim are three deaths associated with illegal immigrants, one a case of vehicular homicide, during a two-year span in Milford, Massachusetts, a town in Worcester County not Bristol.

Meanwhile, Bristol county is rated in many reports as safe.

The threat to the county comes from the actions of the sheriff who will go anywhere to misrepresent the county in the defense of his crusade while ignoring his actual duties.

His House of Corrections has the highest rate of pre-trial deaths, the worst suicide rate in the state, the second highest rate of corrections officer violence, the lowest amount spent per prisoner, and has one of the highest recidivism rates in the Commonwealth. He is being sued for Fourth Amendment violations, violating the Supreme Judicial Court’s Lunn decision, multiple wrongful death, accepting kickbacks from Securus, the phone company whose contract has him gouging prisoners for phone service, and for essentially torturing mentally-ill prisoners with the overuse of solitary confinement.

If he really cared, instead of trotting out grieving families and presenting irrelevant incidents to denigrate those who studies show are hard working people who contribute to the economy and safety of the communities in which they live on the rare occasions he bothers to at least pretend he has facts, he would stop being a media whore and stay home and do the job for which he is paid by the taxpayers.
