THE BISHOPS HAVE BECOME THE PHARISEES

I am not presenting myself as an historical linguist, but I have a hard time accepting that in ancient times in the Middle East, four guys were named Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and they hung out with a lot of Marys. For my whole life and for centuries every Christian knew these people by their Europe-Centric names with no one really caring that they had actually had real names originally and we only know them by their assigned names.

This might be subtle change over time that people just slowly slipped into, but we do have evidence that God accepts name changes since he was responsible for two big ones.

Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, and in a real showy display, God knocked Saul off his horse, made him blind, reversed that, and then said his name was Paul from now on.

We even misname Jesus, Himself.

A heavy influence in my past was a saint named John Bosco, actually Giovanni, but because he was an Italian priest, rather than “Father,” the title was “Don”, like the Godfather. Most people refer to him, not as John Bosco but Don Bosco, and often those who do not know have to be told the Don/John name confusion. Even members of the order he founded refer to him as Don.

What’s the popes real name? Most people may have heard it in passing, but once the Holy Spirit descends and picks a pope, the pope picks a name and is never referred to by his old name again except in rare occasions.

Never heard, “Hey, it’s Roncalli, not John!”

Eduardo Cruz has been Ted for decades.

Yet, ignoring its own history, traditions, and teachings, suddenly, using preferred names, chosen names, or new ones is against the Catholic church.

Bishop Donald DeGrood of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has issued a policy that bans Trans students and staff in the diocesan schools from using their preferred or purposely chosen names making it mandatory to only use the “dead name”, the birth name of someone who has changed it for whatever reason, and bans the use of preferred pronouns, gender appropriate clothing, and the restroom that matches their gender.

Although this is becoming a common action by the MAGA-Bishops of the Catholic Church who confuse Christ’s teachings with politics, the apostles have become the Pharisees, Bishop DeGrood has gone the extra step to suggest that Trans people should be denied the Eucharist. and requiring that priest use the person’s dead name at funerals.

I have to confess that if this were to spread, I will find myself at funerals not sure if I am at the right one since it is not the name I have always known.

Remember all those times before curing the sick, feeding the hungry, getting the lame walking, and curing groups of people in one fell swoop, like the guys with leprosy, or comforting anyone at any level Jesus asked for their names and then perhaps if it was their “real” name then sent them away if he found the name false or not original?

You can’t because He never did that.

Unlike the MAGA-Bishops who seem to have more tests for the love of Christ than He had, the man they are supposed to be following only judged people like the bishops who in those days were the pharisees.

I live in a major fishing port, so I have some familiarity with the business of fishing. There’s a museum dedicated to the history of commercial fishing just a few blocks from my apartment and the country’s largest fishing port at the end of my street, and when I bend my elbow at the bar, there is usually a fisherman or two doing the same and conversations have ensued.

Jesus said to be fishers of men. If the bishop has a way of trawling a net and only entrapping selected fish, I know an industry that could use that method.

Lindsey declares war

Most Republicans including me, believe when it comes to Trump, there is no law. It’s all about getting him. And I’ll say this, if there is a prosecution of Donald Trump for mishandling classified information there will be riots in the streets.”

Pay Back the Sharks

Congressman Jim Jordan, a man who knows the cost of going to college especially if you wrestle, is very upset that the Biden administration cut up to $20,000 in students debt loan for up to 43 million people.

He tweeted,

“If you take out a loan, you pay it back. Period.”

Students should pay back any loan, especially if there is any taxpayer money involved, and his peers know that if you take money, you pay it back.

Republicans are upset in general with Mitch McConnell somehow seeing the ruination of the country if this loan is forgiven. Who is going to pick up the slack for the Mc Connell tax cuts to the corporations and top 1%?

We already lost the money we collected from Gay people in Social security and other taxes who never got any money back and could not control such things as social security and spousal deductions on income tax regardless how long they were in a committed relationship.

Now we lose the student money too?

They were supposed to pick up the slack for the tax cut.

It is one thing to tell people about how wrong it is to not pay back a debt, but it is another to give actual examples of those who did it right.

These Republican congress members took out PPP loans during the pandemic and have been granted loan forgiveness:

Brett Guthrie- $4.3 million
Carol Miller- $3.1 million
Vern Buchanan- $2.8 millionRep. Roger Williams- $1.43 millionKevin Hern- $1.07 millionRep. Markwayne Mullin- $988,700Mike Kelly- $974,100Matt Gaetz$476,00Rep. Vicki Hartzler-$451,200Ralph Norman- $306,520Greg Pence
– $79,441 (former VP’s brother)

Oops. I think I may have contradicted my purpose with that list

There are Democrats who are also free from their PPP loans, but they are not taking the forgiveness and then condemning others for getting loan forgiveness, nor were they the ones who passed that Mitch McConnell tax cut to the rich and corporations both of which he and his family are.

Now, contrast those earning $75,000 or less annually who will be given loan forgiveness, to those who already got it and, having theirs, want to deny it to others.

Just ask Marjorie Taylor Greene, who got her $180,000 PPP loan forgiven, how wrong that is.

no pre-puberty science

Back when there really was no crisis in public education, just the potential of becoming a political non- issue, the GOP began using that non-issue because who wouldn’t support the politicians who had discovered a problem and were the only ones to have the solutions to solve them, doing so for the children.

Children are those creatures that make up the renewable population stock the GOP recently decided they were and  who get no attention until they can be brought out in front of the cameras for the sympathy affect.

As the Republican party and conservatives in general dismantled the public education system, some because of not knowing what they were doing, others who claimed “good intentions” were misguided and detrimental, some because they want money to go to private, for-profit schools, and too many ensuring that we always have a number of unthinking people who, being easily led, will do the works no one else will do and for little pay having been told it was a lot.

I was born in 1950.

My education went from the post war era to prepare us for the new world, through the atomic and space age education where math became important and in the eighth-grade we changed from the traditional arithmetic to “New Math”, Algebra in disguise.

Educational opportunities became more available to more people, and college curricula moved away from the Medieval Oxford model to add subjects more relevant to a changing world.

And as public schools and the teachers who taught in them were continually ignored by politicians when they practically begged for funds to keep updating programs, like ignoring the small price of minor repairs only to have to pay more for a greater one, they were ignored until the politicians saw what they had wrought and blamed it on the very people they had been ignoring.

One of the biggest laments was that American Students were behind the rest of the world in math and science. Of course, that was the fault of the science teachers who could not do experiments in chemistry, biology, and physics labs because there were no funds for supplies.

The only solution was found not to be allotting the funds to buy those supplies but spending that money on the whole testing complex from creation to printing, from delivering and retrieval, from correcting and correlating results, from compiling reports and delivering them, a system that cost money in salaries and all other related cost, with a reduction in instruction.

I taught science to my middle school Special and Regular Ed kids. We were out in the bungalos, those little milary looking classrooms they move onto a campus like mobile homes when the school becomes temporarily too small. We used reflective telescopes and a few with built in lights to look at samples of pond water collected in different parts of town. Each kid made their own discoveries, asked questions, and freaked out at what swims with them in the swimmin’ hole. These I took from a supply closet where they sat unused because there were not enough for all students to have one, or even enough for a pair of kids to share, and no funds to buy more.

The same grade level as my students whose classroom was inside, had to watch the relatively large screen tv by the standards of the day, as the teacher moved the microscope camera over the slide, explaining things while every students saw the saw things at the same time and made no discoveries.

As a kid I had Mr. Wizard and any number of local shows for kids that showed us science things. This was the post WWII space age, and the war showed the importance of science.

A-Bomb.

Some of these science guys were serious like Mr. Wizard, but along the way you had Beakman and later Bill Nye, but in those early years, science was something every kid grew up with, doing all the science experiments at home and then doing them again at school either as part of a lesson or just an opportunity to show off.

When I entered teaching, science class was some degree of Mr. Wizard with the perpetual possibility of something going wrong which meant fireworks could ensue.

In the frenzy to solve the created problem in public education, science class became watching the teacher perform an experiment like you watch the cooking demonstration in the culinary pavilion at the county fair, either in real time, or perhaps a video, but certainly not in a form that takes away from test preparation practice. You can know what is inside a frog without ever actually seeing the inside of a real one.

And while the rest of the world is learning science, our kids are learning how to successfully take the various tests they will spend their educational careers taking.

We need to go back to teaching science and getting kids interested in it as soon as they start getting interested in other things.

Imagine a law that says that while you can let a kid get into baseball, you cannot let a child below a certain age git into science.

I was chasing butterflies from the moment I moved to the ‘burbs at age three and turning over rocks finding the creatures underneath. I had question and my parents, as best they could, answered them. I was never told I was too young to be spending my time exploring and needed to go play baseball.

North Carolina’s highest-ranking Republican, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, advocates for eliminating science and history classes from elementary schools. There is a strong possibility he will run for governor in 2024 with part of his platform being to keep science and history out of grades one through five in elementary school classrooms and eliminating the State Board of Education.

He wants to eliminate history and science and prioritize reading, writing and math.

Yep, pre-World War II Readin’, Ritin’, and ‘Rithmatic,

In those grades, we don’t need to be teaching social studies. We don’t need to be teaching science. We surely don’t need to be talking about equity and social justice.”

What will the kids be using for their Readin’ material?
Science is misleading.

He knows his science and can back up theories and beliefs with evidence as he so clearly showed when dismissing Climate Change.

“Guess what? Most of the people of North Carolina know global warming is junk science.”

I would propose that bringing his state’s education system back to the 1940s will not bring us closer to closing the science gap between the United States and the rest of the world.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

“Stay in your lane.”

We heard this from conservative media personalities when some athlete spoke against some social injustice. Their world was the sports world, and they had no place or right to express an opinion in the real world.

This is Massachusetts where we are somewhat of an island in that the spirit that started this country is still around and, other than the mouth-breathers, this is a forward-looking state.

We have a conservative candidate hoping to be governor who praises the educational system in the state from pre-school-to doctoral level as the greatest in the country but goes around the campaign trail saying that the state’s educational system needs improvement by which he means we need to start adding some Florida stuff.

When Marriage Equality was established in Massachusetts, just as had happened when the state recognized that its Gay citizens are indeed that, citizens, Conservative reigio-political groups from out of state came here to try to influence the thinking of Bay Staters to abandon our ways and adopt those of others we are glad don’t live here.

Later, when outside agents again came to the state this time to take away Transgender Bay Staters rights, the people of the state voted overwhelmingly to preserve those rights.

Bigotry may exist in the state, but the consistent will of the people is that the bigotry has no place here and has no power.

It is a state that passed a law in 1843 that is still one the books that states clearly,

“All persons within the Commonwealth, regardless of sex race color creed or national origin, shall have the same rights enjoyed by white male citizens”,

a law largely ignored then and throughout the years, even up to today, by the very people who would benefit from invoking it instead of choosing to fight battles to establish laws already covered by this one.

They keep trying, though, and it gets a little more than tiresome, especially when they try to convince the people of a state, one that one of their own admits is a highly educated one, that facts and science can be negated with lies.

Like any serious hospital, especially one in Massachusetts, Boston Children’s Hospital addresses the needs of those patients who go to them for help without arbitrarily or politically deciding who gets medical care, and some are Transgender youth who are given care appropriate to their age, the necessary consents if needed, and the whole shebang from beginning to end and all between and after. There is nothing bizarre or nefarious, no treatment in the non-existent cellar of a pizza parlor.

But using the tactic that a lie will distract from the truth, a tactic effective in other areas of the country, “Libs of TikTok” a conservative Twitter account, posted a claim that Boston Children’s provides hysterectomies for its transgender patience.

This predictably resulted in the desired threatening phone calls and emails with increased security being needed because someone could not make a point with facts and, so, resorted to lies regardless of the direct and collateral injury.

A former Trump White House Senior Advisor whose name I will not mention, but his initials are Stephen Miller, took the bait and spread the lie,

“This is monstrous. How does anyone involved in this still have a medical license?”

According to the statement by Children’s Hospital, the accusation made by the conservative Twitter account was

“fueled by misinformation and a lack of understanding and respect.”

Boston Children’s responded in part

The article and the online attention that followed was based on the incorrect statement that Boston Children’s performs hysterectomies on minors in connection with transgender care. For a hysterectomy performed as part of a gender-affirming care, Boston Children’s requires a patient to be capable of consenting for themselves.”

The hospital also made it clear that they will not perform a hysterectomy as part of gender-affirming care for patients under the age of 18.

The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, defended the hospital as it is one of the very many hospitals the city has a right to be proud of.

“This is medical care. This is one of the preeminent, most renowned medical institutions in the country, doing what they do best — which is providing important, necessary care for the health and wellbeing of our community members.”

Considering how backwoods the lies are and those acting on them are out of place and unwanted in Massachusetts, it might be good to know that the US Attorney in Massachusetts finds the lies and threats “disturbing, to say the least”, and Massachusetts attorney Rachael S. Rollins has stated,

“While free speech is indeed the cornerstone of our great nation, fear, intimidation, and threats are not. I will not sit idly by and allow hate-based criminal activity to continue in our District.”

It should also be noted that in a city with innovative hospitals, medical centers, medical schools, whose doctors and nurses, since the day that Cotton Mather first got inoculated, go on to bring better medical treatment throughout the country, Boston Children’s did not just latch on to something, some new political issue, but it is the home to the first pediatric and adolescent transgender health program in the United States.

So don’t come to Massachusetts with your Gunsmoke, Dodge City doctor medical opinions and lies about Boston hosptials.

We deal in science and fact here.

Hide them. It’s for their own good

Traditionally, Gay children had to remain silent and closeted in school.

Different meant bad and that meant bullying.

It took years to get school administrators to accept that there were Gay kid in schools and that they had needs that should be addressed like the need to feel validated, not rejected.

Slowly, although the adults might be stuck in their outdated assumptions about others, over time kids began to see there was nothing wrong with their friends, just differences, and those really only bothered the old people.

Gradually, as Gay students became more a part of their school communities as the young rejected the adult biases in spite of the adults’ efforts to raise bigoted Mini-Mes, a side benefit was better student attendance, better test scores, and fewer drop-outs and attempted and/or completed suicides, and a healthier school environment/

Behavior wise and achievement wise, there was really nothing that separated the Gay kids from the non-Gay ones, and there was nothing in their classroom behavior and academic achievement that set them apart.

But ‘Murka and Jaysis may get that changed.

I taught Special Education students for a number of years and had developed programs for my students based on their individual needs as related to behavior, socialization, and academic achievement.

Occasionally, when a student had attained a certain achievement level or who had modified their social behavior to be more in line with proper social behavior, the student would be carefully placed in a regular ed class in the subject area in which they had showed achievement and be moved to a less restricted placement with the agreement that if things did not go as expected, perhaps the smallness of the SpEd class had made learning easier, or perhaps large groups in a classroom was just too overwhelming, the student could return to the more restrictive Special Ed classroom.

Before any move was made to place a student in a Special Ed classroom or in a less restrictive setting, the student would be evaluated to learn their strength, weaknesses, talents, and needs, and the evaluation of the student continued when placed into a particular classroom with other students with a variety of strengths, weaknesses, talents, and needs.

Within each Special Ed category, Learning Handicapped, Emotionally Challenged, Autistic etc. there are individual needs related to each individual kid.

No category is a one size fits all category.

Also, after a while, the Special Ed students were not separated to isolate them from those they made uncomfortable as at least in recent years Special Ed classrooms were brought into the main parts of a school rather than meeting in a basement room by the boiler.

According to it’s website,

“Moms for Liberty is dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government.”

Their particular target is public schools and the rights they defend seem to be only the rights of people like themselves and not all parents.

The subliminal hint in their name is the use of “Liberty” which, like Patriot, America, Freedom etc, are co-opted by radical conservatives who hide behind these words and justify bigotry as American Freedom.

Moms for Liberty became a widely seen group when during the pandemic they attended and protested school board meetings to oppose mask mandates and Gay inclusivity in schools.

The group has offered bounties for people turning in teachers who discuss “divisive topics”, condemned the Trevor Project for attempting to reduce teen suicides among Gay kids, and lobbied for Florida’s Don’t Say Gay bill.

As one Moms for Liberty Miami-Dade member explained the groups objectives,

“The kids that do have their, you know, they’re confused, or they are gay or whatnot.”

After that well stated introduction to Gay kids in school, she went on to explain,

“that the way they’re trying to go about it is to make it an open conversation and an open thing in classrooms. But like for example children with autism, Down Syndrome, they have to have special IP meetings with a counselor, they have to be put into separate classrooms. I understand, because it’s a different type of education for children with those disabilities, but I think that for children that identify differently, there should also be like a specialized… something for them, so that they feel that they’re important enough that they’re being counseled.”

The message sent is that Gay kids need to be separated from their friends during the school day, not because of a discovered need, but merely on the assumption of some “moms” that the student is different from them and their kids and that is intrinsically bad.

It also makes it much easier to find your bullying target as “Those Kids” will be herded together and obvious as a group.

For a group that claims to know what goes on in school, the group’s leader justified the need for separation to allow for treatment outside public view and without any naturally flowing classroom conversation of some student’s family life, by using this scenario that is totally insulting to teachers.

“I think for the same reason why teachers wouldn’t just bring a child with autism in front of the class and be like, hey, he’s got autism. Embarrassment”

.Then in total cyclic “reasoning”, in explaining why it would be embarrassing for a Gay kid to be in a class especially as states like Florida are forbidding the mere mention of Gay in any way in the classroom which makes being Gay in school a created embarrassment, the group leader said that because of the embarrassment this causes, Gay kids should be set apart so they can have those discussions with counselors and no one has to know about them or that they are there.

Moms for Liberty Miami-Dade chapter chair Eulalia Jimenez claims kids are being “influenced to be gay.”

“I believe that the Gay Community has felt invalidated and left out, and, rightfully so, they want their place. But again, why does this need to be imposed on young children?”

I went to the Baltimore Catechism I have had since elementary school with all the rules a Catholic needed to follow, sometimes accompanied by odd explanations of why, to see if there was anything there to cover that question, and then to my heavily Christian influenced Boy Scout manual only to find nothing, wondering while doing so if during the Lord’s Prayer being recited in her public school classroom as a kid my mother ever got distracted by questions like this, moved on to the handbooks of the various public schools I taught at and saw that I might find the answers from those who were in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, held prayer gatherings at school, or had attended any of the many school promoted local Baptist Church “teen Lock In” weekends.

Nothing, nothing on “this need to be imposed on young children.”
