a rose by any yadda, yadda, yadda

Paula White, after having been Trump’s unofficial “spiritual advisor” since 2016 after his never having the need of one prior to his election campaign, joined the White House in November 2019 in the official capacity as a member of the Office of the Public Liason as part of the president’s Faith and Opportunity Initiative. This position resulted from Trump’s executive order and exists to help religious organizations “strengthen the institutions of civil society and American families and communities.”

An interesting application of religion to a civil society whose laws and actions are to be guided by the Constitution.

Prior to any of this, she had been pastor to a church that went bankrupt and had a television show that caught Trump’s eye in the early years of this century, and she is credited with converting Trump to Christianity at about the same time he decided to run for office. As part of her support for him she has claimed that political opponents of Donald Trump “operate in sorcery and witchcraft”, “Any persons [or] entities that are aligned against the president will be exposed and dealt with and overturned by the superior blood of Jesus” and, to give credence to these statements, also claimed criticism of her belief is “a political ploy just to hurt our president”.

In a January 5 sermon she said,

“We declare any strange winds – any strange winds that have been sent to hurt the church, sent to hurt this nation, sent against the president, sent against myself, sent against others – we break it by the superior blood of Jesus right now. In the name of Jesus, we command all satanic pregnancies to miscarry right now. We declare that anything that has been conceived in satanic wombs will miscarry, it will not be able to carry forth any plan of destruction, any plan of harm.”

She called on God to miscarry babies conceived in “satanic wombs”.

Watch out Rose Mary!

Employing a tactic used by Trump, i.e. denying what was said in a video recording is not what was clearly said, she is now claiming her words are being taken out of context.

“I don’t normally respond but clearly this has been taken out of context. I was praying Eph 6:12 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood. Anything that has been conceived by demonic plans, for it to be cancelled[sic] and not prevail in your life.”

Ephesians 6:12 reads,

But when it comes to medications there is a chance of suffering from side effects when taking ED drugs cialis cheap prices assist to tackle the worst condition effectively. The pills are viagra professional online effective and world class remedy of relieving male impotence. Skip the missed dose if it is viagra online almost time for your next dose, it is better to skip the missed dosage and go back to your regular dosing schedule. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

There is no mention of miscarriages from satanic wombs.

And then she claimed that any attempt to hold her to her words,“In the name of Jesus, we command all satanic pregnancies to miscarry right now. We declare that anything that has been conceived in satanic wombs will miscarry,” was “a disingenuous attempt to use words out of context for political gain. I will just keep praying!”

One reason, I am sure, that Trump likes her is because as a “prosperity gospel pastor” who believes that God rewards the pious with wealth, health, and happiness, he can be considered being a good Christian, not based on his living according to the teachings of Christ, but because he is rich regardless how he got his riches.

According to most Christians, because personhood begins at conception, abortion is murder, and unrepentant murderers cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

Overlooking God’s telling Abraham to sacrifice his son, killing babies and children is supposed to be condemned by God through the prophets, and it was because His chosen people for a while “mingled with the [other]nations and learned their works…They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons, and they shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, desecrating the land with bloodshed” that the Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by the Assyrians.

In contrast to, “Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful“, Abortion, being the destruction of the helpless rather than a rescue of them, it goes against that and to not intervene to save those to be aborted goes against a merciful God.

“If someone…sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in Him?”

So, skipping an argument for or against abortion, accepting instead that most Christians object to it as the murder of an unborn “person” and objectionable to God Himself, why would a pastor who has a position in the White House so is obviously assumed to have a good grasp of her own religion pray, “In the name of Jesus, we command all satanic pregnancies to miscarry right now. We declare that anything that has been conceived in satanic wombs will miscarry”, asking God to kill babies in the womb because their parents don’t support Trump?

when everything is equal

If everything is equal, not only are there no choices, but nothing is good, better, or best, or bad, worse, or worst.  Everything is the same. Everything is normal

It has been five years since it was discovered that lead from old pipes had been leaching into the drinking water of Flint, Michigan because corrosion-control treatment following a change in the water source was not there. This became a health emergency not only because of an immediate outbreak  of Legionnaires’ disease that killed 12 people and affected 87 others, but because lead poisoning would have a future effect on the 6,000 to 12,000 children who had been drinking  the water.

The assumption is that in the five intervening years the situation has been remedied and the news cycle has move on anyway.

We just don’t think about it much anymore anyway.

But that does not erase the real situation.

Responsibility for the disaster got spread and passed around, deflected and denied.

Last December, Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer, announced an impending update by Attorney General Dana Nessel regarding a criminal investigation into the Flint water crisis due in 2020.

“I think she has shown she’s taken it very seriously. These timelines we are bumping up against means that she’ll probably be making some announcements at the beginning of the year.”

Eight pending criminal cases related to the water crisis that resulted from three years of  examining the roots of the problem were dismissed last June by the state’s Solicitor General because of the need to review 20 million documents her office had uncovered with the Solicitor General saying that  “all available evidence was not pursued” by the previous team of prosecutors.

Those prosecutors had cut plea deals for seven officials that resulted in no jail time or criminal records.

Because of this legal mess, the Solicitor wants an extension of the statute of limitations in criminal misconduct cases brought against public officials from six to 10 years.

In early 2017 officials claimed that the water quality had returned to acceptable levels, but Flint residents and officials still expressed doubt about the cleanliness of the water in 2019, and there are still an estimated 2,500 lead service lines the city expects to finish replacing by July 2020.

But all of this in Flint and anywhere else can now simply go away.

If everyone’s water is of poor quality by the standards as they stand now, if those standards are changed or eliminated, everyone’s water quality is the same.

It’s all good.

And so the clean water rule had to go.

hey, hey, we’re the monks…..

Downtown New Bedford is an awkward combination of the historical and the abomination that hit many Massachusetts cities, the 1960s through early 1970s urban renewal. Some beautiful buildings were allowed to keep their original architectural beauty that had shown the world that at one time this was the richest city per capita in the country, others have been stripped of their character to get the clean cut futuristic lines that the 1960s thought would be the look of the space age, while other buildings were torn down to be replaced with cheap looking, boxy architecture.

Route 18 is a scar that cuts the downtown district off from the water front, a six lane highway that called for the razing of whole neighborhoods and architectural beauty so a person can get from the interstate to the stop light at Cove Street real fast, a highway to which traffic lights were recently added after the road was there for 40 plus years, one of which now stops traffic where there is no cross street.

One of the down town Buildings that replaced a wonderfully ornate 19th Century building is a flat, glazed brick fronted monastery and chapel to Our Lady of Yet One More Thing. It sits opposite the old newspaper building, a Renaissance Revival-style building, which was built in 1894, the massive public library with its granite steps and huge bronze doors, and City Hall, another structure that harkens back to the city’s wealthy standing, and it stands defiantly staring at them, mocking them like a new person in the neighborhood who shouldn’t be there.

Like many inner city monastery/chapel combos it has daily mass, perpetual adoration of the Eucharist, recitations of the Rosary, various other religion based activities, and the monks you occasionally see in the downtown area close to the monastery. Each day at 6:00 p.m. one stands on the building’s roof ringing the bell signaling vespers.

For all intents and purposes they are there, but not there, unseen, so you hardly see anything that would indicate any activity throughout the day unless something Gay is happening at which point the monks organize whoever is connected to the place to gather near a Gay event to yell false witness at the Gay people and anyone else at the event, or praying the Rosary in a very ostentatious way that, I am sure, makes them feel like they are doing something, if not simply using the Rosary like garlic is used against vampires.

The presence of these little group activities are so rare as to be noticed when they happen, and are deserving of Richard Attenborough telling us about the rare appearance of some reclusive creature that comes out for a rare and specific ritual.

“Here we have the reclusive monk who, rarely seen, will come out of his lair when it perceives the presence of Gay people exercising their rights as citizens.”

They appeared opposite the public library the morning it held “Drag Queen Story Hour”, holding signs condemning those attending to an eternity in hell, and yelling falsehoods about Gay people, lying in the name of Jesus. And there were the Rosary reciters.

Apparently a tax exempt entity decided it had the right to tell the taxpayer funded public library which taxpayers it should exclude from library usage.

At the first film of the annual film festival organized by the LGBT Southcoast Network, there they were again. They had walked the three blocks from the monastery to the New Bedford Whaling Museum where the festival is held in the museum’s theater that is open to community use.

People, Gay and Straight, who wanted to attend had to pass by the monk’s group praying the Rosary either to imply those attending needed prayers to be saved, or to get personal brownie points with the Deity.

I lived for years in the Buckle of the Bible Belt getting yelled at by the Westboro Baptist Church and local fundamentalists so, rather than being the big thing the participants thought it was, in reality, it was sadly second string.

Since I live down town, I walk to many places I need to get to. Very often I have to pass the bus station with its passengers and regular denizens of the homeless, the addicted, and the mentally ill. If they aren’t actually hanging out at the bus station, they are at the post office across the street on one side sitting on the steps and retaining wall, or across the other street on the sidewalk in front of a closed bar. Although it is one block from the monastery, and although I have seen the Mother Teresa nuns, whose convent is five blocks away, at the bus station talking with people (They once stopped to talk non-judgmentally with me assuming I was homeless when I was just sitting on a small retention wall making a phone call while walking home, shabbily dressed, from the auto repair shop where I had just dropped of my car)  no matter what time of day I have passed the place, which I pass by often, unlike the nuns I have seen, I have never seen a monk there.

One block from the monastery/chapel there are people in need of housing, food, and hope, but the monks et al would rather bother film festival attendees, who just ignored them, three blocks away.

Matthew 25:35-40

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

“Then the righteous will answer him,

‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? We were too busy trying to keep a Drag Queen from reading a book to children in a public library and people from seeing a main stream movie.”

PENS!!

I sat down on the couch on Monday all set to watch the blistering defense of the president by his impeachment trial defense team.

Jay Sekulow began it and slammed the House impeachment articles with one of the most severe attacks I have ever witnessed being delivered on the senate floor.

It was withering.

Illustrating his statement with a video of the moment it happened, Jay Sekulow informed the American people that Nancy Pelosi, after signing the actual Articles of Impeachment, handed the pens with which she had signed it to the seven impeachment managers who had stood behind her for the signing.

Such giving of pens is a common practice.

I have a pen used by the then governor of Oklahoma, Frank Keating, when he signed the $3,000 teacher pay raise on February 16, 2000.

And in March 2017, Trump had handed out pens in the Oval Office after signing the NASA transition authorization act that boosted the space agency’s budget to $19.5 billion. He does this often when he signs papers with pens instead of Sharpies.

But now this act has become a sinister one, and one that negates the articles of impeachment.

Sadly, that was the most cogent presentation from the defense team all day.

religion is now in Sessions

Jeff Sessions has ties to anti-Muslim individuals like Stephen Miller, Frank Gaffney, David Horowitz and his Freedom Center, and organizations like the Center for Security Policy, and has claimed that Islam, a religion, is a “totalitarian threat”.

He believes, while pushing a pro-Christian agenda, that “theologically-based Sharia law fundamentally conflicts with our magnificent constitutional order that separates church and state, and that considers free debate and dissent the way to a better world.”

Sessions was among the first to support Trump’s Muslim Ban because he claimed that immigrants to the United States pose a particular threat.

Stephen Miller, who is the architect of Trump’s Muslim Ban worked as communications director for Sessions when he was a senator.

Sessions regularly attends events hosted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which was founded by John Tanton, a white nationalist who in 1993 wrote,

“I’ve come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that.”

FAIR’s mission is to severely limit immigration into the United States, and its president, Dan Stein, once said that supporters of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which abolished the racist national origins quotas that favored immigrants of European descent, wanted to “retaliate against Anglo-Saxon dominance” and that this “revengism” against whites had created a policy that is causing “chaos and will continue to create chaos.”

Sessions attends FAIR’s annual “Hold Their Feet to the Fire”, a gathering of anti-immigrant Islamaphobes, and has been the keynote speaker at FAIR’s advisory board meeting.

Janice Kephart left her job at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), an anti-immigrant, think tank, to serve as special counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and during debates on the “Gang of Eight” bill, she often whispered into Sessions’ ear.

In 2014, the Sessions received the “Daring the Odds: The Annie Taylor Award” from the David Horowitz Freedom Center, run by anti-Muslim David Horowitz who said in a speech

“Why are all the major Muslim organizations in America connected to the Muslim Brotherhood and why are 80% of the mosques filled with hate against Jews and Americans?”

When he accepted the award Sessions said,

“I’ve seen some great people receive this.”

People like Pamela Geller, a rabidly anti-Muslim activists.

In 2015, Sessions received the “Keeper of the Flame” award from the Center for Security Policy (CSP) another anti-Muslim organization whose founder, Frank http://secretworldchronicle.com/podcast/ viagra online That is why I suggest getting treatment for erectile brokenness. CSP has called for a ban on Muslim immigration.

Also in 2015, Sessions along with Ted Cruz and two other senators voted against a non-binding resolution that “affirms that the United States does not use religious tests for immigrants seeking admission into the country”, but at his Attorney General confirmation hearings, however, he claimed that he does not think that “Muslims as a religious group should be denied entry to the United States.”

In that same year he warned against accepting more refugees, first stating,

“Since 9/11, we have permanently resettled approximately 1.5 million migrants from Muslim nations inside the U.S.,”

and adding later he called this,

“an unpleasant but unavoidable fact that bringing in a large unassimilated flow of migrants from the Muslim world creates the conditions possible for radicalization and extremism to take hold.”

And when it came to religious freedom,

” internal American religious principles I don’t think apply providing constitutional protections to persons not citizens who want to come here,”

In a September 2017 speech at the Georgetown University law school on the topic of free speech on college campuses, he described Afghanistan as having “no heritage” like what the United States “has been blessed with,”  a heritage that “causes us to understand in a more deep way…why freedom is important.”

Sessions is running for his old senate seat, and because he believes that atheists and leftists were waging an “unprecedented” attack on religious freedom in the United States, h states on gic campaigns webpage,

“We have major party candidates for President campaigning on socialism, confiscating firearms, and closing down churches they disagree with.  I’ve battled these forces my entire life, and I’m not about to surrender now.”

A television campaign ad claims,

“They plan to gut our religious freedom and our freedom of speech.”

And in another,

“These people contend that the state and government is trying to force religion down people’s throats, but in fact they want the state, the law enforcement powers of government, to be used to silence constitutionally protected religious speech.”

In light of his statements on Islam, the part where he claims major party candidates are campaigning on “closing down churches they disagree with” is priceless.

under the bushel basket

Whenever Trump takes an action against those who are unpopular with his base – the Muslims, the Gays, the Transgenders, the immigrants, the people of color, the educated – he makes a big show of it. He sits at either the Resolute Desk or that toy one surrounded by the people to whom he panders, signs his name with a sharpie, and then holds the document up for all to see what he has done.

But when it is an action that hurts people across the board, including his base, he does it quietly so we only learn about it if some news outlet tells us and unless there is some more dazzling news.

He did that quiet thing this past week.

In the town in which I grew up, people spent a lot of hot summer days at the pond formed by a dammed up river near downtown . Young boys like me would show off our manliness by pointing to the hair on our arms and legs that got colored brown by whatever was in the water,

We swam in that pond, swallowed some of its water when we swam, and exposed our sight and hearing to whatever that brown stuff was whenever we swam under water with our eyes open.

Eventually, after decades of use, the pond was found to be polluted with whatever factories and other businesses upriver were dumping into the water, the pond was closed to swimming, and a public swimming pool was built.

There were paper mills in and around Fitchburg, Massachusetts, that, like most manufacturing plants with waste water, just dumped it into the Nashua River. As a kid, unaware of the underlying danger to this practice, I was fascinated by how colorful that river was downstream from the factories. It was like watching multi-colored spilled paint meandering down a gutter.

In places like this where rivers were the sewers of factories, people organized to clean rivers up, and in 1972 Washington passed the Clean Water Act. It was one of the United States’ first and most influential modern environmental laws, but it was usually applied to large, very noticeable bodies of water, like rivers, lakes, and ponds.

That being the case, in 2015 President Obama instituted a clean water rule that widened the scope of what the Act covered to include streams and wetlands, restricted pollution caused by certain land use, and made it necessary to get permits from the EPA to use chemical fertilizers and pesticides that could run off into water on a person or company’s property and from there could spread to streams, rivers, and lakes.

It was because of this history that Trump could boast,

“Something I want to make clear to the media: We have among the cleanest and sharpest — crystal clean, you’ve heard me say, I want crystal clean — air and water anywhere on Earth,”

The word chakra in the Sanskrit language and is a symbol to sexual performance. ‘Vajikarana’ means generating vigor of a horse and is used in curing ED, male cheapest viagra australia infertility and premature ejaculation. and state his desire that,

“We want to have the cleanest water on earth. We want to have the cleanest air on earth. Our numbers, as you saw, we had record numbers come out very recently. Our numbers are very, very good. Our environmental numbers, our water numbers, our numbers on air are tremendous.”

It was because of the Clean Water Act and all its amendments over time, and President Obama’ clean water rule that Trump could make his claims and boast,

“I want clean air. I want crystal clean water. And we’ve got it. We’ve got the cleanest country in the planet right now. There’s nobody cleaner than us, and it’s getting better and better.”

So a person could be a little confused as to why the Trump administration announced a repeal of a major Obama-era clean water regulation that limited the amount of pollution and chemicals in the nation’s rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands.

Trump found fault with Obama’s rules, claiming they limited the rights of farmers, real estate developers, and landowners, so his action limits the number of waterways the federal government can protect from pollution, and its oversight of larger bodies of water.

Under his limitations to safeguarding water, the country’s sources of safe drinking water and habitats for wildlife could be substantially harmed.

According to Jon Devine, director of federal water policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council,

“The clean water rule represented solid science and smart public policy. Where it has been enforced, it has protected important waterways and wetlands, providing certainty to all stakeholders.”

The regulations, as they will now stand, will benefit oil and gas producers, golf course owners, and real estate developers.

And for those who forgot, the Trump Organization, of which Trump is a sole or principal owner of certain businesses under its umbrella, is involved in real estate development, property management,  construction , golf courses, and a winery, all entities that will benefit over the general population whose access to clean recreational and drinking water can be adversely affected while Trump’s fortunes improve.

some encouragement

Bear with me as you will see where this is going.

The successful advocacy of GLBT students in Oklahoma City took 12 years. During that time there were over 8 superintendents, both interim and actual, quite a few ever changing deputy superintendents, 5 principals, a number of central administrators going in and out of the metaphorical revolving door, ever changing school board members, and various committees whose announced purposes were to make progress while the covert intentions were to stall it.

There were many one-on-one meetings held with follow up written summation documents exchanged during that time both electronic and hard copy, and, although each of the ever changing administrative and elected staff were familiar with what of those they had generated or received during their moment in the process, there was only one person, one constant, throughout the whole 12 year process that had attended every meeting and had a copy of all documents including any post-it notes that might have been affixed to a document or the envelope that it came in, and they presently sit on the floor of my pantry in the leather satchel they had been carried in to every meeting and presentation.

And, considering the important nature and the goal of the advocacy, only one person had bothered to check and found that when it came to recording open meetings and one-on-one meetings behind closed doors, unlike other states whose laws required that all participants be informed of the intention to make an audio recording, Oklahoma was a state where this was not required. All that was necessary was for one person at the meeting to know a recording was being made, and the law did not specify that the person so notified had to be someone other than the person intending to make the recording. I always had a small pocket tape, and later digital, recorder somewhere on my person, and as I entered the meeting I would tell myself that I was going to be recording it.

When things came to a climax and the court case was being put together and even during it, it became clear that if the other side was unaware that a document existed, the assumption was that it didn’t, and if they did not know I had it, I did not.

During depositions, the other side, not knowing the contents of the trove of 12 years of documents, not even knowing or ignoring its existence was possible, gave answers to questions  that might have been acceptable had these documents and both audio and visual records not existed. So, while school administrators answered questions one way, they did not know the true answers to the questions were in the documents that would be used in court.

In the lead up to the dismissal hearing that eventually led to a District Court case, the school district policies called for all evidence to be presented in my defense be turned over to the administrators’ attorney who would determine if it could be used, and this included copies of all picture and video recordings that were then subject to edit by her while my side was denied the ability to object to the censorship and self-beneficial With online cialis canada men, these symptoms are associated with PE. Although the school board saw the edited videos and assumed they were complete enough to act on them, no such court procedure required the same be turned over to be edited by the administrators’ attorney for the trial de novo, so it was while in court that all concerned saw that the previous edit of the videos did not erase the original whole.

The same went with documents. Copies being required to be turned over for editing and redacting, did not end the existence of the originals.

There is  certain arrogance in, besides assuming who someone is and calling them names based on that limited knowledge, taking for granted that someone does not have information because, among other things, they are not important enough to have that information in spite of a person’s importance not being dependent on someone else’s idea of what makes for importance.

In the case of the Sheriff of Bristol County, Massachusetts and his defenders, the situation is that, not knowing what documents others have, they can say what they want without referencing documents, statistic, and studies, but the and the public must realize that there are those who have them and vase their assessment of the sheriff on them.

When asked about his anti-immigrant animus, the sheriff will throw out his claims whose veracity is based only on his being a county official whose words are assumed to have gravitas. However, there are those for whom, as an elected official, he is a poorly performing employee, and who have the documents he either does not know exist or, if they do, assumes no one has them, and his defenders and supporters go along with that.

For those fighting the good fight but are somewhat deflated by his approach, those who have played the long game know that as long as people persevere there will come a time of reckoning when the statements made by those who have the documentation will win out over those, like the sheriff, who do not.

Never assume the other side doesn’t have something and vase actions on that assumption. Assume they do, and make sure you have what they should.

There will be that moment when your having had the facts all along while they buried themselves deeper in the lies will be exposed, and you get to witness that moment and its effect.

And with that will come victory and elation.
