Good television, but not much else

Remember when Mark Zuckerberg went before the congressional committee to answer questions about Facebook and other computer related topics and it became painfully clear that most of those with the sternest questions misused terms, showed they knew little of the topic at hand, and, in order to sound  informed rather than their biggest high tech accomplishment being stopping the 12:00 from blinking on their VCR, had to read questions off papers to sound informed?

Well, they did that again this week when Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein sat before them to answer questions about the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails, but got very few about that.

After having opened his committee to investigate the events that took place at our embassy in Benghazi by saying,

“I remain hopeful there are still things left in our country that can transcend politics. I remain convinced our fellow citizens deserve all of the facts of what happened before, during, and after the attacks in Benghazi and they deserve an investigative process worthy of the memory of those who died and worthy of the trust of our fellow citizens”

and then spending two years and $17 million on the hearings only to come up empty handed, when it came to the Mueller investigation, Trey Gowdy told Rosenstein,

“We’ve seen the bias, we need to see the evidence. If you have evidence of wrongdoing by any member of the Trump campaign, present it to the damn grand jury. If you have evidence that this president acted inappropriately, present it to the American people.”

He seems to have forgotten

  • George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI.
  • Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI.
  • Rick Gates, a former Trump campaign aide, was indicted on similar charges to Manafort, and agreed to a plea deal with Mueller’s team for one false statements charge and one conspiracy charge
  • Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chair, indicted for conspiracy, money laundering, and false statements
  • 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies were indicted on conspiracy charges, and, in some cases, identity theft related to a Russian propaganda effort designed to interfere with the 2016 campaign.
  • Richard Pinedo pleaded guilty to an identity theft charge in connection with the Russian indictments, and has agreed to cooperate with Mueller.
  • Alex van der Zwaan pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Rick Gates.
  • Konstantin Kilimnik, a longtime business associate of Manafort and Gates was charged alongside Manafort with attempting to obstruct justice by tampering with witnesses.

Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, who likes to be seen without a jacket because just a shirt and tie screams,“I am tough and I mean business,” made a series of accusations impugning Rosenstein’s integrity even when the basis of his attacks were not grounded in the real world.

Of course, he didn’t let Rosenstein respond to his accusations.

It made for some interesting and entertaining television, and showed how just wearing a shirt and tie did mean he was tough and meant business, but it accomplished nothing. Rather, it made him look somewhat uninformed as he had to be reminded by Rosenstein that in spite of Jordan’s claim that the Assistant AG had refused to comply with a congressional request to subpoena phone calls, the AAG had to point out that you cannot subpoena phone calls,

He based certain accusations, not on official reports or documents, but only on what he had read in the “lying media”.

As Rosenstein had to explain,

“As with most things in Washington, the real work is not done on television and it is not all done by me. Trump administration officials are meeting and talking to your staffs every day to accommodate requests and produce relevant information to this committee, other committees and several Senate committees.”

When accused of being Angry Democrats hell-bent on destroying Trump,

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced.

“I’m not a Democrat, and I’m not angry.”

And Chris Wray, the FBI director, when asked if he was an angry Democrat, responded,

“I do not consider myself an angry Democrat, you can be confident in that.”

RANT

I am going to be honest.

I have met and worked with many labor and GLBT activists over the years, and the work done and battles fought were often tough.

In the forty plus years I have seen unions struggle to get and maintain decent hours, wages, and conditions of employment and have protected the contract from assaults by representing teachers in grievances even when the motivation was to maintain the contract and preserve its power for all members and not the one who I had wished was not the person I was representing, especially when that person was a non-dues paying employee whom I was obligated to represent by law although they were using the resources of the union supported by its dues paying members.

I saw and fought a number of attempts by management to whittle away conditions and the respect hard working people deserved. I heard the lies used to justify the attempts to reduce professionals to mere “help”.

As a GLBT Activist I heard the lies and scare tactics used to reduce me and mine to “other” status. I heard the demonizing and dealt with the treatment used to deny me and mine the inalienable rights with which all are endowed by our creator. I watched as people were given the opportunity to decide that I was not someone who had those rights and could be denied housing, medical care, employment, and decent human respect because someone needed to be able to do that for their selfish gain,

I watched as some of us were bashed and killed for sport in the name of religion, and for that same reason saw friends die because religion claimed a virus was God’s punishment, not for who they were, but because they were said to be the caricatures invented by those who used religion as a political tool.

I saw the resistance to protect school children from being bullied to the point of suicide because they weren’t the good Christian, heterosexual kids that were acceptable to those in charge.

I saw us treated as throw away people who should be grateful for any crumbs we were given by those whose world it was assumed to be. We were expected to be grateful they let us exist in the margins,

And so I fought.

I fought on both coasts and in the Buckle of the Bible Belt alongside those who fought for our birthright as full citizens.

The price should be competitive enough viagra for sale cheap and it needs to be avoided. There is the role of cialis generico uk and levitra. Diabetics who generic levitra brand receive regular spinal manipulation can also get instructions on exercises that can be done at home, a great nutritional guidelines. And the fight was long, and it was relentless.  Some places were more successful than others, and where some places had won many rights, others are still fighting for the basics. Nowhere are the rights complete, and the assaults become very creative with religion being the controlling force.

So what I do not need now that the president, congress, and the Supreme Court are making my Constitutional rights dependent on one religious denomination, and with an opening on the SCOTUS bench that shows all the signs of going to someone who will further assault my rights and rule in favor of those who also do it, is to be told to keep a stiff upper lip and carry on because it’s not all that bad, especially those who take their rights as a given without having had to fight for them and assume everyone has also always had them.

If you have never had to fight for your rights, don’t tell those of us who have that things are not all that bad, the fight is easy, and we should welcome it because it is.

This time, if you tell us not to give up the fight without realizing we are going to be fighting old battles for the prizes already won, and if you assume it to be the lark your advice appears you think it is, join us this time and help.

But don’t tell me not to be angry, or to be nicer than those who attack me, or be the better man.

They don’t accept me as a man.

Allow me my anger born of my frustration that once again I have to devote my time to the fight that should never have had to be fought in the first place while I am forced to fight it again.

And if you are a young GLBT person, it’s more your fight than mine as our age difference means you have to live under the upcoming conditions far longer than I do especially if you sit back and wait for someone else to do it.

We old guys need you to be there to take the baton.

Last time I tried approaching things with class and dignity.

Not sure I can do that this time.

Bright side for Dear Leader

After the Singapore Summit, Trump had assured us,

“The World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe!”

“No more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research! The hostages are back home with their families. Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!”

He also assured us that,

“There is no limit to what NoKo can achieve when it gives up its nuclear weapons and embraces commerce & engagement w/ the world. Chairman Kim has before him the opportunity to be remembered as the leader who ushered in a glorious new era of security & prosperity for his citizens!”

“I want to thank Chairman Kim for taking the first bold step toward a bright new future for his people.”

Satellite images show that North Korea is making numerous improvements to the infrastructure at a nuclear research facility even though we had been assured by Trump, who said he trusted Kim, that Jim had shown his trustworthiness by already destroying nuclear sites.

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement that called for a denuclearized Korean peninsula, but there were no time limits or guidelines.

North Korea is progressing on several adjustments to the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center which include new cooling water pump house, multiple new buildings, completed construction on a cooling water reservoir, and an apparently active Radiochemical Laboratory.

It seems that it is business as usual.

Trump ended military exercises with South Korea in exchange for this.

Success!

The White translator

Where would we White people be without Donald Trump to translate what Black people say?

We may hear their words, and we may know what they say, but we don’t really know what Black people mean when they use understandable words that express clear thoughts.

Maxine waters suggests that any time we see one of Trump’s cabinet members in our spaces we should let them know in uncertain terms that we do not agree with what they are doing, especially when it involves marginalizing people, and, in spite of our thinking we heard what she said, we obviously didn’t.

She said,

“If you think we’re rallying now, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Already, you have members of your Cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants who have protesters taking up at their house, who say, ‘No peace, no sleep. No peace, no sleep.’ God is on OUR side! On the side of the children. On the side of what’s right. On the side of what’s honorable. And so, let’s stay the course. Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up and if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

She may have used the word “cabinet” twice, and we may have thought that is what she had been talking about, but Trump has to translate that word for us White people so that we know what she really said was to attack his supporters.

What she said didn’t sound anything like that, so, thank God, Trump was there to translate.

And I know his translation was a faithful one because as I channel surfed the cable news stations the last few days I kept seeing all the White pundits assessing his translation of Waters and explaining how harming Trump supporters was not “going high”, while not saying anything about what I, at least, thought she had meant by the actual word, “cabinet”, that she had used.

The Tea Party.org people are claiming she is facing a five year sentence for inciting a riot.

Now Waters may have explained,

“I have no sympathy for these people that are in this administration who know it is wrong what they’re doing … but they tend to not want to confront this president”,

but obviously this needs translation into White-speak because it seems to emphasize she is talking about the members of the administration, not Trump supporters.

Perhaps my misunderstanding of the real meaning comes from my not, like the president has boasted about himself, knowing words.

As he assured us,

“I went to an Ivy League school. I’m very highly educated. I know words, I have the best words.”

Thank God he does. It is like the last time we needed him to translate standard English used by a Black man into standard White English.

When Colin Kaepernick first sat during the National Anthem at football games, and then took a knee after a veteran told him doing that would be more respectful of the flag while still being a form of protest, he wanted the country, especially those in a position to address this, federal, state, and local government, and figured his public status could begin that discussion.

He explained his concern with the number of unarmed Black men shot by rogue police officers in situations where White men would be spoken and given to opportunity to follow a calm command.

When he explained his action he had said,

“Ultimately it’s to bring awareness and make people realize what’s really going on in this country. There are a lot of things that are going on that are unjust, people aren’t being held accountable for, and that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that–this country stands for freedom, liberty, justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.

Yes. I’ll continue to sit (he later knelt). I’m going to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change and when there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent in this country–is representing the way that it’s supposed to–I’ll stand.”

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

I was misled into thinking I had understood what he meant, but Trump had to translate this concern for racial disparity, so I would realize it is all about disrespecting the flag and the troops

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get given a traffic ticket, that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired. He’s fired,'” Trump said in a speech and he tweeted,

“NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S.”

and
“If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!”

He made it all about the flag and who is a patriot when I thought it was about that racial inequality thing. I am so thankful there was a White Guy who could get us to ignore the actual issue as we had thought it was and got us to see it was all about disrespecting what America stands for which, I have to accept, includes racism.

It is like that time in Charlottesville.  I thought I understood what “Jews will not replace us” meant until it was translated by the president  and it rwally was “We are really good guys.”

Big Irony?

While dismissing the racism that exists in this country, and while he and his supporters claim they are not racists, Trump, as the man in the big house, objects to the Black man saying what is on his mind, and takes it upon himself to not only change what the Black man says, but  telling him where and when he can speak.

erasing facts

Hope springs eternal that once a person is presented with facts, although they might not change their belief totally, they might at least modify an erroneous opinion or belief.

Sometimes the best you can hope for is that they take time to consider the fact before outright rejecting it without even a cursory consideration.

Sadly, and too often, they reject the facts to be able to hold to their original position as if there is some shame to change, or, perhaps, to admitting they had been wrong and they just can’t accept that or are afraid of other people’s reaction if they were to find out they had been wrong.

The biggest betrayal is to know the facts and to hide them so someone will not be able to consider them, and they become more politically useful because of their erroneous thinking. While they think their opinion is sound, those who withhold the facts know it is not, and this is used  for their own benefit.

They control the person through that lack of facts.

Trump administration officials rejected a study about the positive economic impact of refugees in the United States.

A report by the Department of Health and Human Services found that, rather than being a drain on the taxpayers and sucking at the teat of public assistance, from 2005 to 2014 refugees “contributed an estimated $269.1 billion in revenue to all levels of government” through federal, state, and local taxes for a net fiscal impact of $63 billion more than they cost during that decade.

However, because it had the need to show that refugees are a drain, the Trump White House instead insisted that the report was “delivered by someone with an ideological agenda, not someone looking at hard data”, and rejected the study and its conclusion insisting that “in an average year over the 10-year period, per-capita refugee costs for major H.H.S. programs totaled $3,300,” and that “Per-person costs for the U.S. population were lower, at $2,500, reflecting a greater participation of refugees in H.H.S. programs, especially during their first four years”

It, therefore concluded that,

“The actual report pursuant to the presidential memorandum shows that refugees with few skills coming from war-torn countries take more government benefits from the Department of Health and Human Services than the average population, and are not a net benefit to the U.S. economy.”

The original report would have raised doubts about Trump’s rationale for executive orders imposing a travel ban on visitors from six majority Muslim countries and his cutting the Obama administration’s refugee quota for 2017.

The person responsible for deceiving people to sustain support for Trump’s claims about and actions taken against refugees is his advisor, Stephen Miller. It was he who came up with the strategy of only presenting the costs of refugees while omitting information that shows that they offset that cost at a profit. While he may be willing to point out that someone borrowed ten dollars from someone else, he conveniently omits mentioning that besides returning the original ten, the person threw in an additional five dollars so there was not a ten dollar loss, but a five dollar profit.

When George H.W. Bush (Bush I) was president, he was apprised on the high number of teen suicides being attempted and completed in the United States, and to his credit authorized a study to be made about it.

In 1989 this report was concluded, and besides the frequency and causes of attempted and completed suicides, the report also contained suggested remedies that could at least help to reduce the numbers.

When the report was released by the Bush administration, one chapter was omitted.

Because H.W. Bush feared a negative reaction from his Republican base, the chapter dealing with Gay teen suicides, which contained the number of Gay teen suicides compared to the general population, the cause of which was not that they rejected themselves because of their sexual orientation , but, rather, their being beaten down emotionally and psychologically by the attitudes and treatment they were subject to at the hands of those who clung to stereotypes and misinformation, and the remedies that included eliminating harassment at school while making truthful information available not only to the Gay students themselves but to their peers which could reduce the harassment, was omitted.

While steps were taken to reduce suicides among heterosexual students, nothing was done to benefit and reduce suicides among the Gay ones until that chapter was released as the result of a Freedom of Information request.

Politics took precedence over the lives of teens, and lives were, indeed, lost.

It is wrong to withhold facts for political reasons, especially when any group of people becomes a target of those who have been deceived into thinking they have been given all the facts.

It is evil when that is done by an administration which divides the people so it can benefit from one side making victims of the other when there should be no division.

Our way since 1818

When children were separated from their parents at the southern  border because of the Trump “zero tolerance” policy, there was an obvious flaw in the procedures. Kids went in one direction, hundreds of miles away from the border in many cases, and their parents were sent in another, and an idea as simple as tickets at a theater’s coat check window  so one could be reunited with the other, was not implemented perhaps not even considered.

The object, after all, was to appear tough, but it did not mean careful thought was necessary.

Although parents could easily identify their children to reclaim them, the government doesn’t have a way to get them all together in one place so parents can identify their kids and vice versa.

Some kids are infants, and are, by virtue of their age, unable to run to, let alone point to their parents.

Here’s what has already happened in one case that could be repeated this way, or could happen in other ways .

The boy was named Carlos by his parents at birth, but his name is now Jamison.

When his Guatemalan mother was arrested in 2007 on an immigration raid at a chicken processing plant in Missouri the boy, her son, was taken from his mother, and put up for adoption in Missouri despite her objections at the time of her arrest and in the time since..

Neither mother nor son have seen each other since the arrest.

Eleven years later a Missouri judge has ruled that the boy should stay with the Missouri couple who took him into their home five years ago while his mother was in federal custody, and the mother has no rights to even see her child.

The adoptive family is happy because they get to keep their adopted son, but they have also expressed a darker thought that this decision “really puts the biological mom in a difficult decision in terms of staying in this country.”

They are happy that she is now more easily deportable.

This recent ruling affirms an earlier one in which the judge determined that “illegally smuggling herself into the country is not a lifestyle that can provide any stability for the child”, basically deciding that the mother’s parental rights had been terminated because she had abandoned her son while she was incarcerated.

Now, with the mother’s objection negated, formal adoption may proceed.

“I could not love him more, had he come out of me physically.”

So she obviously knows how much the mother most likely loves her child and wants him back.

This removal of a child from its parents to be adopted by someone else is hauntingly familiar, as this practice is not new when it comes to the treatment of “others”  and creating opportunities to “whiten” them up.

Federal and state governments have a history of taking Native American children from their parents,  placing them in institutions, and then making them available to white families for adoption to “civilize the savage born” by Christianizing them. These children were subsequently psychologically battered for the rest of their lives.

In 1818, the House Committee on Indian Affairs promoted the idea that Indian children “will grow up in habits of morality and industry…and become useful members of society if they are given ‘the primer…the hoe…and the Bible.”

As many as 30% of Native American children were separated from their families between 1941 and 1967 with this practice going back to colonization and settling the frontiers, so, obviously, this practice was not lost in the historical past where between 1880 and 1902, 20-30,000 children were removed from their families, and 90% of those were placed in White families according to a study by the Association of American Indian Affairs and presented to Congress in 1974.

This may have resulted in the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) being enacted in 1978, but it took until December 2016 for the Department of the Interior to issue regulations on the law to create legal uniformity and consistency.

One example of the confusion and need for uniformity in the law as it existed was that, in spite of ICWA’s passage in 1978 and implementation in 1979, in Pennington County, South Dakota, more than 1,000 children had been taken from their Native American families since 2010. Not only were children being removed without any evidence that this was best for the children, but with hearings and decisions being made within 48 hours of removal, parents did not have time to obtain legal counsel, were denied the right to testify, or were not notified why their  children were taken.

Most hearings had lasted no more than five minutes with many only about 60 seconds, with the state winning100 percent of the time.

This is similar to how Native American children were treated in the early part of the 20th Century in Oklahoma so their land allotments resulting from the Dawes Commission report  could be stolen by White men who benefited from this so that, rather than the Native Americans being well off because of the lumber and mineral rights, including oil that should have been theirs, the Native Americans are the poor ones while the land swindlers are rich.

Then as now, the hearings were on a 60 second, line up on a court hearing conveyor belt.

It is conceivable that there will be many parents who will not see their children again, nor the children their parents. There will be many children, emotionally and psychologically wounded, who will have good American families adopt them and make them truly “American”, in spite of what the country did to them and the memories they have of that.

And while claiming this is not who we are, and making comparisons between this and Nazi Germany, we do have stop fooling ourselves and accept that this is who we have been since 1818.

Show me the money

Bristol County, Massachusetts sheriff Tom Hodgson has a very strong presence  in places other than at his jails, and loves to spend taxpayer money on more things than those related to his job.

He loves to get on television to claim he is protecting the community, apparently rather than doing his job of running the jails, and he attends any conference that needs him to explain his xenophobic and rather heavy white supremacist attitude toward Brown people.

Who pays for his travel and lodging when he makes these appearances, and who is running his jails when he is not there?

Looking at his budgets, he does say he spends money, but he leaves out the details on what he has actually spent it on.  Few of us would accept a budget that listed a certain amount of money was used for buying stuff, but we taxpayers are expected to accept his cloudy accounting of our money.

Remember, this is  guy who was donated a boat so he could patrol the coast, modified it to the tune of thousands of dollars to be able to do that, and when the harbor patrol and coast guard said that, beside that not being his job, they were already doing that, gave the boat to one town with whose chief of police he had worked on certain committees. County taxpayer money paid for his gift from which he garnered publicity at no benefit to them

The  Bristol County Sheriff’s Office and Securus Technologies,a company that operates privatized telephone systems in U.S. correctional facilities, has a nice little arrangement whereby, after inflating the cost of inmate calls from his jails, the sheriff gets a kickback. The kickback was the gift offered to the sheriff so that Securus would get the contract, and the extra money comes from the cost to prisoners’ loved ones and attorneys.

Massachusetts law bans sheriffs from assessing fees for telephone calls, and the Supreme Judicial Court has ruled that Hodgson cannot charge prisoners any fees that are unauthorized by law, so he allowed Securus to set the fees with his kickback included.

For those who have done it, and many have, it is like having the body shop over assess the cost of body work for car repairs so the insurance company pays for the complete repair and you get to keep the deductible.

The sheriff’s attorney costs for any lawsuit filed against him based on his actions are paid for by the taxpayers.

For those who are budget conscious, besides a lawsuit about the phone call scam, there are also lawsuits dealing with negligence, some instances of which have cost lives.

Seven inmates with a history of substance abuse were left alone in their cells and hanged themselves.in a two year period.
