because only one side does it.

Pour yourself a nice glass of Jack Daniels Whiskey and relax as I tell you about history erasure.

The biggest objection to taking down monuments to celebrate the Confederate side of the Civil War is that to do so is to erase history. Oddly, even as we don’t need those monuments to know how the Civil War ended, those wanting them to stay, besides celebrating those who took arms against the United States, are unknowingly the same people who have no problem with erasing history so long as it removes someone with whom they do not identify, or who they look down on in spite of what benefit they were affor4ded.

Erase whomever you want, just not the White guy.

When Jack Daniels was a teen he went to work for Reverend Dan Hall, a White man in Lynchburg VA, who ran a general store with a distillery in the rear, and Hall taught him how to distill his version of whiskey. Eventually, Daniels took over the distillery, renamed it Jack Daniels, and it was designated Distillery Number Seven by the government agency that certified it is as legal. The rest, as they say is history.

But, that would be a history that relied on the conscious erasure of the Other, not accidentally by removing a picture.

Not long ago, the Jack Daniels company revealed that a slave was behind its world-famous recipe, one that sets it apart from other American whiskeys because it is not based on the traditional European recipe, but on an African one.

It was actually not Dan Hall’s recipe that Jack Daniels had learned, but that of Nearis Green, a slave, who had been told by Hall to teach it to him. Dan Hall had told Jack, “Uncle Nearis is the best whiskey maker that I know of.”

When Daniels opened his own distillery in 1866 he employed two of Nearis Greens sons.

Over time, Nearis Green and his family were erased from the Jack Daniels Old No. 7’s published history. How could a distillery in the South even think of successfully marketing its product if it was acknowledged to be a product based on a Black man’s recipe?

They had to be removed.

A Southern White man may have taught another Southern White man how to run a distillery, but it was a Black man whose recipe made it a success, and the story was well known locally.

The Jack Daniel’s Distillery is known for a product line produced through  the Lincoln County process that has un-aged whiskey passing through several feet of maple charcoal to purify the bourbon to give  it a slightly sweet flavor. This process had been credited to Alfred Eaton, a white Tennessean.  Research, however, has found that, in order to purify the whiskey they were able to distill, slaves used this process long before Eaton came along in 1825.

If you have turned on a light near where you are reading this, remember, when Thomas Edison “invented” the light bulb, it wasn’t that big of a success because his filament burned out too quickly. It might have been fascinating, but it was somewhat useless. He sold his light bulbs calling them the “Incandescent Electric Light Bulb with Carbon Filament” having received a patent in 1881. Edison hired Latimer to work at his invention shop, and like any greedy company, claimed Latimer’s invention for the team, the team of bone, Edison.

Latimer also invented the threaded socket for the light bulb. His inventions made the light bulb more practical for public and household use than Edison’s prototype.

But we are told that Edison invented the light bulb as if he worked alone in his lab.

Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1848. His father, George, had escaped from slavery in Virginia six years earlier, and, after being captured in Boston by bounty hunters, he was defended by Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison.

Lewis Latimer oversaw installation of public electric lights in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, invented restrooms for railroad cars, and a precursor to the air conditioner that was improved on by Willis Carrier who is credited with inventing the air conditioner.

I might also point out that while we are familiar with the story of the first phone call, “Watson, come here”, Latimer was there too, but he is never mentioned in the story.

But as we all know, it was a White man, Edison, and a White man, Bell ,who invented the phone and the light bulb all by themselves, right?

While riding in trolley car in New York City during a snow storm in 1902, Mary Anderson watched as the driver kept stopping the car, getting out, and removing snow with his hands. Back home in Alabama she solved the problem by inventing windshield wipers, and got a patent for them. An invention by a woman did not pique the interest of the fathers of the automobile industry  So she had a good idea that went nowhere until her patent ran out, and the guys started using her idea and design starting with Cadillac which began to put windshield wipers on their personal vehicles as standard equipment..

She may have lived long enough to see windshield wipers on almost every car in the country,  but she never received monetary compensation for her invention.

Lord Byron of poetry fame had a daughter who preferred math to literature, and along with a like minded friend, Charles Babbage, conceived of the idea for an “Analytical Machine” in 1843 that should be able to  “weave algebraic patterns just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves” which is basically computer programming.

Her involvement in this was dismissed as, being a woman, she couldn’t have been able to do that, and it was only after her death that surviving correspondence between her and Babbage showed the idea was hers.

As a new mother in the 1940s Marion Donovan was annoyed by the frequency with which her baby soiled diapers complete with leakage and seepage. Using a shower curtain she made the leak proof diaper which became popular because it was convenient.

People my age, the Boomers, should remember the diaper service trucks that would pick up the week’s used and semi-rinsed diapers that the mother placed in a covered bucket and replace them with fresh ones. There was always a smell near the bucket, and a lingering question as to the safety of this procedure since you had no idea of the medical condition of the baby who previously wore them and how effective the sanitizing process really was.

Mrs. Donovan decided to invent the disposable, one baby/one use diaper, but this idea didn’t catch on. A decade after her idea of a disposable diaper went the way of a diaper’s contents, Victor Mills decided to “use” her idea and Pampers  was born. The company was credited with the invention, Marion Donovan got no credit

So it would  seem that it’s not so much the erasure of history that is of concern, but who is getting erased. And when all you got was a participation trophy, that trophy becomes very important.

Gay curmudgeon’s advice

It might be an age thing, or it could be an Irish thing, just look at our music where we revel in our depression and bad luck, but every time a good thing happens when it comes to GLBT rights, although I am joyful, I am also one who waits for the shoe to drop.

When the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land, and while people were celebrating, myself included, I was still aware that there would be an attempt by those who just need to hate someone to find a way around it.

There were people like Kim Davis who refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples because she was personally offended that she had to treat all taxpayers equally while getting strong support from evangelicals and Christian legal firms. Her religious supporters defended her choice to ignore the law and her job because it went against her religious beliefs

Then there are the states that begrudgingly go along with that ruling, but attempt to institute laws that still treat same sex marriages as unequal to heterosexual marriages although the law sees no difference. They may have to recognize a couple is married, but that doesn’t mean they have to allow same sex couples to adopt or treat them like a family if they moved from some other state in which adoption was not denied.

And it will happen when it comes to employment protection.

Can’t fire someone because he or she is Gay? Just come up with another excuse.

Been there.

When I started advocating for GLBT students, it was rather low key until someone told the local newspaper that there was a meeting scheduled to discuss including GLBT students in school district policies on nondiscrimination, bullying, and harassment, and a reporter quietly showed up at what was a closed meeting , closed not for secrecy but because the reality was that having to deal with the topic for the first time, a public meeting would most likely be awkward for some in attendance who might say things that upon more education they would like to retract later, something that cannot be done if it is printed in the newspaper. The meeting ended abruptly when the chair realized the reporter was not on the list of attendees and he found out she was a reporter.

That slowed things.

When a parent found out about my unceremoniously hung Gay History Month poster, a list of GLBT people who had and were still contributing to society, he complained that it offended his religious sensibilities, and, rather than handle it properly, the district overreacted to placate the parent who went to a local television station’s news department and complained that while I could have a poster depicting Homosexuality, his daughter could not have a Bible on campus,  which was totally false. This resulted in a news story that ended with much disappointment on the part of that station because, whereas the description was that it was a depiction of homosexuality and, therefore, implied lewd pictures, all they saw was a list of name and realized it as a non story.

But that opened the issue to the public with its attitudes for and against, and put me in the spotlight as an openly Gay teacher who had been very effective in my classroom and who had served on many district educational committees.

Over time it became obvious that the district would have to become more inclusive, but it was also obvious in a state heavily lorded over by the Southern Baptist Church, that doing the right thing could ruin a Board member’s political career. Doing the right thing became subject to all manner of machinations to avoid doing it.

Millions of cheap viagra tablet people consume these medications without prescription in countries like India because they are perceived as safe medication.

Eventually, the only way to deal with the dilemma was to remove the messenger and thereby silence the message.

But it would have been very complicated if the openly Gay teacher, well known by the public because of media coverage, was fired for being Gay.

That is when a mid- level central office administrator hit on the strategy of claiming I was incompetent so that I could be fired for that and insubordination, and if I followed the usual script of a teacher after being accused of these two infractions being offered the option of fighting the charge and potentially losing my teacher certification, or agreeing to just quietly go away with all record of the transgressions, real or fabricated, quietly “lost”, the quiet departure would be the best and most convenient decision for them.

Unfortunately for the administrators who wanted me removed and the message silenced, the inclusion of GLBT students in school policies was bigger than I was, and I could not just let it die.

Although the in-house dismissal process which favored the administration and was designed by them so they would always prevail while denying a teacher a fair dismissal hearing relied on the teacher choosing the disappearing option, instead of going quietly away, I filed a suit against the school district in District Court.

As was only too clear to my attorney and me, the court case showed that with 14 years of stellar evaluations, creative classroom  programs, involvement in major district committees, and high student test scores, incompetence and insubordination could not be real charges especially as those now trying to dismiss me had written glowing reports and commendations of a job well done over the years, and that it was decided at the beginning of the previous academic year that dismissing me was an objective and anything that obstructed that aim would be ignored in the evaluation process.

There had to be another reason, and the judge saw it. It was the advocacy that the administrators wanted to end and they needed to remove me to do that, and the charges of incompetence of insubordination were the smoke screen that was meant to conceal that , but it did not stand up to scrutiny.

The well known, openly Gay teacher with a good educational performance record could not be fired for being Gay, and so, as the judge saw, another, unsupportable reason was invented, a reason that would not have been needed if I had quietly gone away, and an excuse that could not be supported.

This is what GLBT employees may need to prepare for.

After the euphoria of the Supreme Court ruling, GLBT people should curb their naivete’ and see that if their anti-GLBT employer cannot fire them because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, they will try to find another way no matter how fictitious that is.

The reality is that the strength of the ruling will depend on the vigilance of the employee with the added pressure to be better than the best employee.

This is the reality for the present time, but as the young people become the people in charge, in light of their more accepting and less prejudiced attitudes, it will be temporary. But it will be.

So be vigilant. Join a union if one exists in your workplace, and be the best at whatever it is you do.

Don’t give them another excuse, real or fabricated, to hide behind

Your equality in the workplace has been recognized, don’t squander it by treating it as if it is special.

It’s graduation season

It may not be a total victory, but with the Supreme Court decision written by Justice Neil Gorsuch after a 6-3 vote that ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects GLBT employees from employment discrimination, the GLBT rights movement got a big victory.

This time the T, Transgender, was not left for another day.

Up until today, in 27 states, a person could be fired just for being Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender with no recourse to fight that; in 21 other states, plus the District of Columbia, GLBT employees had full protection from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodation.: in two, while the G,L, and B had protection, the Ts did not.

As of today, all 50 states have the one inclusive policy.

Ironically, because of the order in which this decision and marriage equality were made, In the majority of states a Gay man could legally marry his spouse on Saturday, and then be fired on Monday for doing that.

This doesn’t mean that the struggle to get this is over, since some states will most likely do whatever they can to get around this decision, like was done with marriage equality, or give snarky attention to ways to let this happen, but find other ways to take out their petulance. like refusing to allow same sex couples to adopt, so that there is still uneven treatment.

But regarding employment, employees in those 27 states that had not had state laws to provide statutory protection against this kind of discrimination are now protected by federal law and have legal recourse if they are fired for their sexual orientation.

the tie that binds

Okay, Younger People who have come forward to make changes in all things justice and Race related, not all racism is just right out there. Some is subtle and only easily recognized by “fellow travelers” who get the meaning and know, because no one else gets it, it is their intellectual joke on everyone not in the know.

It’s a sophisticated form of gang sign and serves the same purpose.

So pay attention. You may not only learn something, but becoming aware of this subtle intrusion of white supremacy right in front of you, a dog turd wrapped in a gift bag topped with multi-colored, festively fluffed up tissue paper, you might see where your energies could go.

I may have lived in Oklahoma for 18 of my, so far, 70 years, the longest I have lived in one place, but that does not mean the Dust Bowl was part of my heritage. It is part of the heritage of those who were born and raised there, not mine, except in a tourist sort of way. In this regard and any aspect of what is standard thinking and behavior in that state, it would not be a part of me by accident of birth and nurtured attitudes based on generational experience, but a part of me by conscious choice to adopt them.

I confess I didn’t do much with opting in.

According to the sister of Sheriff Hodgson of Bristol County, Massachusetts in her biography, their father arrived in the United States from England at the end of WWII on a special visa, not the usual “they need to come here the right way, like my parents did, not getting exceptions” way of entering the country. He also brought a young boy from a government posting in the Middle East, getting it done through an exception to immigration requirements by falsifying the boy’s actual nationality, so, obviously, the father didn’t, or at best shouldn’t, have had an anti-Immigrant, anti-non-white streak he would have passed on to his son, unless he had an extreme case of I-Got-mine.

So, whatever happened in the Civil War, before, during or after it; whatever good or bad that came of it; whatever the why; no matter how profound or inane any of it was, none of it is part of Thomas Hodgson’s  heritage. He would have had to have chosen what in the area of Maryland in which he lived he liked and what attitudes he would support.

Those who favor the way he treats people housed in the Bristol County House of Corrections will claim he is not a white supremacist and that, although he gave a speech at a white supremacist conference about law enforcement and immigration, it does not make him a white supremacist. I will grant that, as my having spoken to a Southern Baptist gathering did not make me a Southern Baptist. But, if it is a near annual appearance and if he serves on the board of an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim organization founded by an avowed and well known white supremacist, that defense evaporates, just as my claiming not to be a Southern Baptist would if, along with the talk I gave, I joined the church and got on the church’s council.

Hodgson is on the board of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an anti-immigrant hate group founded and led by John Tanton, an avowed white supremacist who once said,

“I’ve come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that.”

Tanton, who is associated with a former Klan lawyer, leading white nationalist thinkers, and Holocaust deniers, promotes the idea that racial conflict will be the outcome of immigration, and believes Whites would inevitably develop a racial consciousness because most people don’t want to disappear into the dustbin of history, and that once Whites become racially conscious, the result would be “the war of each against all.”

Among other FAIR luminaries there is Dan Stein, president of FAIR, who believes “Immigrants don’t come all church-loving, freedom-loving, God-fearing. Many of them hate America, hate everything that the United States stands for. Talk to some of these Central Americans”, and Joseph Turner, FAIR’s former Western field representative, who once accused Mexican immigrants of turning California into a “third world cesspool.”

The sheriff has made radio appearances with Mr. Stein, supporting his ideas like the claim that Central American immigrants are engaged in “competitive breeding”.

Among FAIR’s suggested readings are Alien Nation by Peter Brimelow, whose central theme is that America should remain a country dominated by whites, and Pat Buchanan’s State of Emergency: The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America that explains that America’s shift away from being white-dominated is “one of the greatest tragedies in human history.”

But Sheriff Thomas Hodgson’s being on the board of such an organization is somehow okay because he doesn’t believe in what the organization does?

In 2011 FAIR stated in its annual report that they had identified sheriffs who expressed concerns about illegal immigration and met with these sheriffs and their deputies, supplied them with a steady stream of information, established regular conference calls so they could share information and experiences, and invited them to come to Washington to meet with FAIR’s senior staff.

Sheriff Hodgson was one such sheriff.

Considering the racial make-up of the County he is supposed to serve as sheriff, when he is not off giving racist lectures or plaques of appreciation to Trump, is heavily immigrant and descendents of immigrants, it would stand to reason that a good number of those in his jail are from that stock. He knows these people. He lives among them. He goes to events with them.  Yet he consistently abuses those of them in his custody by volunteering them to help build Trump’s wall, creating an environment in his facilities that has resulted in more inmates dying  in them than  in any other county jails in the state, attacking detainees  in the Bristol County ICE Detention Center on May 1, 2020, and collaborating with ICE  through the 287(g) agreement as if that was the reason the people of the county elected him sheriff.

All the while, he constantly speaks of stereotypes closely following Trump’s playbook and anti-immigrant rhetoric even having his own dog whistle term for immigrants, “Criminal Illegal Aliens”.

These are his, and yours, and my neighbors.

The sheriff’s white supremacy proclivities have been brought up in the past, but have been denied in spite of their being verified mainly because it takes time and effort to read reports, and, while people may feel comfortable dismissing these connections with white supremacists because they didn’t hear them, there is the problem of the picture in the lobby of the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office in Dartmouth in which he is wearing a Confederate flag motif tie covered in Confederate battle stars and bars.

Long reports can go unread, but an actual white supremacist related picture can give all the necessary information in an instant, and that can change things.

The picture of him wearing the confederate motif tie first appeared on the official website for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office in 2003 accompanied by a message that said in part that the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office is contributing “to the betterment of our country.”

Confederate flag tie in a Northern state, and stating his intent was to better the country?

There are a number of vendors of such ties along with flags, mugs, and belt buckles with some iteration of the confederate flag on them, and more than one carries the tie proudly worn in the picture whose style is referred to it as an “anglo-Confederate society tie”, It is worn by  people affiliated with the broader neo-Confederate movement.

While he denies any connection with or having any sympathy toward Confederate causes, he offers as part of his defense for having worn it is that it

“represents what it means to be American.”

Really?

The establishment of the Confederate States of America for the purpose of defending slavery and then firing on Fort Sumter beginning a civil war with the existing United States “represents what it means to be American”?

Considering the upheaval these days and the “discussion” of race relations, one would think that given the opportunity to, perhaps, acknowledge a fashion faux pas as a mistake done back when people weren’t as “woke” as now, one which, in light of the present awareness, would not be repeated, the sheriff doubled down on his defense of the tie by stating when he was asked if he would wear the tie now, knowing how the design may be construed, Hodgson admitted he would because

“It represents the colors of a country that’s given me the opportunity to serve.”

Apparently he thinks the Confederate States of America is still a country. If so, how has a foreign country given him the opportunity to serve in another country, the United States.

As the son of an immigrant himself, this certainly would bring up the question about his loyalty to the United States.

So even if you don’t take the time to read all the reports on his white supremacist leanings and actions, the picture with him wearing the tie and his claiming it represents his country as a way to defend the tie, tells you something about the foundation of his obsessively negative attitudes toward Black and Brown people, and should help you understand how white supremacy works in the shadows to the detriment of our family, friends, neighbors, and selves.

There is no need to leave the area to correct white supremacy seepage. What’s necessary is knowing it is here, and there is a spider in the web.

He is wore a white supremacy tie, and says he would do it again.

Military dilemma

Why is this even a thing?

Imagine the outrage if a member of the military affixed a Russian, Nazi, Japanese, British, North Korean, or North Viet Nam flag to any part of their uniform. We fought these people, at least the ones we either knew, assumed, or were told were the bad ones. American’s died fighting these people. Families lost sons, daughter, brothers and sisters, husbands, and wives, fighting these people.

They may have played a role in our national history, but to allow their flags on U.S. military uniforms or in the public spaces on the bases where those in the military have no say in being as if they do not represent the enemies who killed our people?

Really?

Following the Marine’s, the Navy’s top admiral wants to prohibit displays of the Confederate battle flag, and the Army has said it is considering renaming bases that are named after Confederate officers.

Dilip Dhanpal, Senior Urologist, Sagar Hospitals said, “Urology cialis prices has always been the most techno-intensive medical discipline. levitra tab 20mg This gradually changed, not by a constitutional amendment, but through a state-by-state process. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Gilday, directed his staff to begin crafting an order prohibiting the Confederate battle flag from all public spaces and work areas aboard Navy installations, ships, aircraft, and submarines for the sake of unit cohesion, preservation of good order and discipline, and upholding the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment.

On land, the US Army is consideringn removing Confederate leaders’ name from bases, and US Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley are open to holding a “bipartisan conversation” about renaming nearly a dozen such bases.

The Confederate flag represents a country that took arms against the United States for the worst possible reason, and although it might be considered a symbol of Southern pride and heritage, which is fine if that is your heritage, these sentiments do not deserve governmental support, nor be honored by those who did not believe in what that war was all about from the Southern point of view.

The symbol has increasingly become a rallying call for white supremacists.

Trump meanwhile is totally opposed to changing the names of the bases because they have trained some very fine service members, as if the name controlled the training and had they been called something else might not have been as good.

He seems to have a problem accepting that it is the job done at those bases that produce good military personnel and not the name of the place.

“Officer FriendlY”

Like with many professions it is hard to be critical about the police if you have friends and family who are still or once were in law enforcement. Like any profession there is loyalty to your fellows, and a defensiveness when people from the outside speak as if their experiences were universal and all informative.

As a teacher I would cringe any time a teacher was arrested for some heinous child endangering act because it meant for a time we all bore that stain. One child molesting teacher made us all suspect, and people were only too eager to demand steps be taken that needed to be applied to all teachers. For a time the public believed that the one rotten apple had already spoiled the whole barrel.

Teaching, like police work, is very public, subjected to the go to phrase “I pay your salary” when someone wants to criticize with no substance, and being referred to as a “public servant” as if you are supplied room, board, and necessities, only in exchange for which you must serve no matter how degrading the whim.

So, although I do not approve of the extreme forms of police on citizen abuse, I have to remain mindful that the majority of police are not those people, but the better ones.

I have a problem with the keyboard warriors whose opinions outnumber any actual involvement that means inconvenience and persistence as oppose immediate gratification in making change especially when they think that they can really impress people if their opinions and suggestions are so extreme as to be impractical, but strong enough to create a cute phrase.

They love the controversy and compete in an attempt to establish who is stronger on the issues by their own metric and they quite often abandon reasonable reform for a total abolition of  something  without having realistically giving time or attention to think it through.

It might be a lack of a single concept, perhaps a name that encapsulates the majority’s desire for reform and gives form to theory.

Lately a phrase has become part of the discussion, and it is as simple as sticking to the fact that  taking a knee was about racial disparity, especially in regard to police actions, than to how viewed the American flag.

People are throwing around “Defund the Police” applying it as it fits their argument, and it fits everyone’s opinion because it is left undefined.

The desire to defund the local police may be better accepted if it was more clearly seen as properly funding the police.

As in any large profession that has a hierarchy and moving up in the system depends on how closely you are aligned with the thinking of the top, there is a chance that practices, procedures, training, and finances can be subject to bad influence, and this calls for assessment and restructuring. In the present time, what the police do and how they should do it, needs some evaluatio0n from without and within, and that could mean ending certain programs and introducing new ones that would put local law enforcement squarely on the same side as the people they serve and protect. They exist, after all, to protect the community from harm, not surveil the members of the community to watch for their inevitable law breaking, and seeing nothing else.

Rather than needing “defunding”, what is needed is redirection and carefully budgeted programs.

As a community sharing program, one police officer I know had his department buy an old travel trailer which was then moved to locations with large senior citizen living centers, so residents could ask the police questions, or contribute their ideas.

Police meant more than just busting people.

Other place may see a need for social interaction with the community on officer patrols.

Increased investment in community reduces the need to call police in instances when police officers’ specific skill set isn’t required. Police have enough on their plate without adding a need for them to be mental health or drug addiction counselors, so maybe funds could go to other entities that are better equipped to help and could eliminate a police presence.

As a teacher I am familiar with both the conscious and unconscious assignment of new responsibilities to teachers and police to take on roles for which they are not trained because those who see a need for certain services don’t really think who should administer them and let them become the job of the teachers or the police because they have more contact with community members than do other people.

The way it is now, if there isn’t enough mental health funding, let the cops do that, or maybe be a parent to someone else’s kid so you teach them how to follow rules rather than have parents do it, or have to lecture some kid at a store because mommy doesn’t know how to be more than the child’s best fun friend.

Police should be patroling to keep communities safe, not dealing with finding the homeless shelter, go to a school because some parent did a poor job of raising their kid, dealing with mental health issues, or going to someone’s house because the neighbor’s dog parks.

Four Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call for a minor, nonviolent crime. Why four? He had supposedly tried to The chemical promotes smooth blood circualtion to the male sex viagra genérico 25mg organ. He hadn’t been violent, nor was he acting in a threatening way.

That should have involved one police car with, perhaps, two cops in it.

If money was invested in violence prevention programs, training in minority relations, youth homelessness programs, opioid taskforces, and mental health response teams, uniformed police could be protecting communities from actual crime not societal problem.

Perhaps money for these programs could come from the money budgeted for military style gear, mobile command centers, and not having local  law enforcement “drafted” into helping ICE perform its job at the local community’s expense.

Because of the past two weeks of demonstrations, there seems to be a social media contest to wear the crown as the Most Outraged. This takes the form of demanding the tearing down of the whole system so there is nothing, instead of a carefully thought our program of reform.

These people, these keyboard warriors, like to tell people that you cannot really be dedicated to social justice if you do not think the exact way they do, and let you know they have gone to an event or two, but they are not there for the actual long haul it takes to affect real change.

They do not want to improve policing and establish better policies and practice; they want to do away with the whole idea of a police department without actually knowing what that entails.

They have a repeatable phrase and repetition will make it useful.

“Defund Police!”

Abolish the Police!”

But as was said in the play A Man For All Seasons,

“What would you do, cut a great road through all the laws to get to the devil?

And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned around on you–where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country’s planted thick with laws from coast to coast–man’s laws, not God’s–and if you cut them down…d’you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake.”

But the benefit of the law should be applied with reason.

And for those who see a world with no police and rampant end-times crime, no one is actually suggesting the ending of the police. The phrase “defund the police” is one of those scary generic terms which sound frightening if left undefined, which it is why those who use it leave it undefined.

Gay people recruit, but religions convert; a Black football player takes a knee it becomes “un-American”, whatever that means in the moment; people walking from Central America for the promise of this country are a caravan, an invasion; when they get here they are “Criminal illegal aliens” without having done anything but get here; The Affordable Care Act became Obamacare to emphasize that as good as it was for most, it was the program of a liberal Black man.

So what is actually meant by “Defund the police”?

Police Departments will continue to be funded, but not overfunded. More care will be required as to where the money goes and if what is proposed is actually necessary.

Money that went to local law enforcement to be able to perform those jobs that aren’t actually theirs, things like mental illness, homelessness, school policing, medical care, and youth issues would be redirected toward those agencies trained to deal with these issues so that the police can keep their communities safe for those in them.

It is not as negative as abolishing something, but to get it back to what it is supposed to be before those who recognized a societal problem needed to be addressed, decided it would be, but then never took the necessary step sof designing a system to do that, and, so, let it fall on the police.

Redirecting money would include assessing community needs to see where the money would best be spent for the greatest results as opposed to buying the latest artillery so the cops on the beat take on the look of an invading army.

It means things like hospital, schools, social services, and infrastructure will get the money tom do the job they should be doing.

“Defunding” is a scarier term than the truthful one. Reforming police financing would be more correct as it, unlike defunding, is reasonable and not a term chosen to appeal to emotions rather than reason.
