November 14, 2012: During his first post-election news conference, President Obama responded to a question about immigration reform, “I’m very confident that we can get immigration reform done. … This has not historically been a partisan issue — we’ve had President Bush and John McCain and others who have supported comprehensive immigration reform in the past. So we need to seize the moment. And my expectation is, is that we get a bill introduced and we begin the process in Congress very soon after my inauguration.”
January 28, 2013:Democrats Charles E. Schumer, Richard Durbin, Robert Menendez, and Michael Bennet along with Republicans John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, and Jeff Flatt introduce a path to citizenship for most of the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants.
January 29, 2013: President Obama basically agrees with their idea.

September 17, 2013: President Obama disappoints supporters of a path to citizenship by saying that for him to use executive authority to expand a 2012 decision to suspend deportations of young immigrants brought to the country illegally by their parents was not an option.
December 2013: Boehner hires Rebecca Tallent, director of immigration policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, giving people the hope that he might pursue immigration reform.
December 21, 2013: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says: “I think that John Boehner will conference with the Senate. Why wouldn’t he? He’ll have a lot of pressure from his members now that the [2014 midterm] election is getting closer. Some of his members are in very marginal districts where they need to do something on immigration.”
January 30, 2014: House Republican leadership releases immigration “principles” which included a path to legal status, but not citizenship.
February 6, 2014: Boehner, citing “widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws”, backtracks on the Republican immigration principles because “it’s going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes”.

May-June 2014: Because of all the Central American children crossing the Southern border, Republicans accuse the president of not adequately enforcing immigration laws.
June 25, 2014: Representative Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois, declares that the hope for comprehensive immigration reform “is over”, and tells the House GOP, “We’ve given you time to craft legislation and you failed. The president has no other choice but to act on existing laws to make deportation policies more humane.”
Which brings us to lunch on the Friday after the mid-term elections.
The president had the Republican leadership at the White House for lunch. They were supposed to talk about plans for the next two years.
Those Republicans in attendance asked the president to give them time to work on immigration legislation, warning him not to act on his own.
I guess the last two years was just not enough time for them to do anything.
But President Obama, saying his patience was running short, insisted that he intended to act by the end of the year if the GOP majority continued to do nothing.
This did not sit well with the Republicans, and Senator John Cornyn of Texas said, “The president instead of being contrite or saying in effect to America, ‘I hear you,’ as a result of the referendum on his policies that drove this last election, he seems unmoved and even defiant. I don’t know why he would want to sabotage his last two years as president by doing something this provocative”.
Methinks the GOP may be misreading the election, or they might have acted differently when President Obama was e-elected.
So now the Republicans want everything to come to a standstill until they can start doing what they have avoided doing up to now.
It is going to be a long two years.

Yep, this is, indeed, a Christian nation, and no more proof of that comes from a state that has a bunch of mega-churches and christians.
Arnold Abbott is a 90 year old guy who serves gourmet meals to the homeless in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Unlike a lot of soup lines and food distribution places, Mr. Abbot ads a little class by dressing in his chef’s white apron, and prepares gourmet meals.
For over 20 years he has prepared four-course gourmet meals for the homeless and hungry.
Problem is, Ft. Lauderdale recently passed an ordinance that makes feeding the homeless on the street a crime.
Abbot, along with two local ministers, got arrested as he was serving food, and now the three of them face 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” Abbott recalled.
Not to be deterred, the charitable trio, Arnold Abbot and pastors Dwayne Black and Mark Sims, were back at it this past Wednesday night serving up chicken-and-vegetables with broccoli sauce and a cubed ham-and-pasta dish.
They were cheered on by approximately 100 on lookers.
“Thank God for Chef Arnold. I haven’t eaten all day. He feeds a lot of people from the heart,” said 56-year-old Eddie Hidalgo, who described himself as living on the streets since losing his job two years ago.
Police spokeswoman DeAnna Greenlaw explained that when Abbot was called over to a police car parked nearby, he had been issued a citation on the charge of violating the no feeding the homeless ordinance.
The ban on feeding the homeless is obviously an attempt to limit the number of homeless people who hang out in public places, but a more effective way might be to address homelessness more effectively.
The causes of homelessness need to be addressed.
We have people on the streets because they have lost their jobs when they were out-sourced, and we have veterans returning home from the Middle East who are simply ignored because they no longer make for good photo ops, and at least 30 cities have recently passed ordinances that ban feeding the homeless on the street.
Mayor Jack Seiler of Fort Lauderdale said that even though Abbott and the two pastors have good intentions, the city can’t discriminate in enforcing the ordinance. “The parks have just been overrun and were inaccessible to locals and businesses,” Seiler said.

New York City recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters, and this limits donations of food.

But careful remedies take time and effort.
No feeding the homeless ordinances are quick, but they merely move the homeless people to some other place that causes a problem there.
It’s that NIMBY thing.
These ordinances move the homeless around, they do not address the underlying causes.
I know how it works
I read the op-ed piece by John Boehner and Mitch McConnell that was in the Wall Street Journal the day after the mid-term elections, and I have surfed the net reading articles where the new majority in the House and Senate announced the wonderful things they intend to accomplish now that they are in the majority.
I saw a parallel to an experience I once had.
In the “aughts” when I was advocating first to have workshops for teachers to let them know there were Gay kids sitting invisible in their classrooms so that teachers might be a little more sensitive about things they might say, just as they had had for students who belonged to other groups based on race, color, creed, nationality, and handicap, and then to have “sexual orientation” added to policies on Bullying, Harassment, and Nondiscrimination so that their inclusion in those policies would not be dependent on the personal, religious, and political opinions of school employees, there was a great deal of resistance because of the personal, religious, and political opinions of the people in charge , and the fears of school administrators in a district in the Buckle of the Bible Belt to d the right thing.
They may have wanted to do the right thing, but they were concerned about how local churches and politicians would react to any positive actions, and preferred to let the Gay kids put up with whatever came their way rather than have their names appear on some document which could affect their paycheck.
The school district leadership had created a middle management, ghost position on campuses whose sole purpose was to quietly retain administrators and their paychecks while claiming that their fiscal responsibility had reduced the number of administrators within the district while they merely changed the names of the position those people held, and rarely, if ever, uttered the new name.
In some cases two vice-principle positions were reduced to one, but the other VP was still on campus making the same money in the ghost position while the public accepted that there had been a 50% reduction in administrators and administrator salaries.
It worked quite well.
But without a clear job description, those in these new positions were at the mercy of their principals, and, living with the hope that loyalty would lead to administrative advancement if they played along, these people did whatever they were directed to.
The person holding the ghost position on my campus held the often expressed hope that when the principal retired she would get his endorsement for the job, and then the job itself.
The principal, who eventually stated that he saw the advocacy for Gay students to be a personal attack on him, put our ghost administrator in the position of obstructionist, and she did her job all too well.
After proclaiming to me in the presence of a witness that there were no Gay kids in high school, only those who wavered back and forth until they settled one way or the other in later years, this administrator helped the principal obstruct any progress by coming up with newly invented policies as needed to prevent any progress to better the school experience of the Gay students.
Sometimes these would border on the absurd, but she always managed to defend them by quoting school policies that she thought justified her actions and by extension the Svengali principal who was directing her.
Where she could have educated the principal to help him grow and change his attitude, she bolstered him in his mistaken beliefs because she wanted his endorsement to replace him upon his retirement.
Times were changing, and with No Child Left Behind, the old incestuous system of patronage for running the district was giving way to a new system designed by those hired to bring the district into compliance with the new law, and this introduced a whole new class of self-serving administrators whose future and salaries depended on at least appearing successful in raising student achievement regardless of reality, while the old guard lost its power.

Sometimes she was too obvious about it, and after a really complicated strategy to use me to get at the new guy, I was able to explain reality to him by showing documents and emails that revealed the past and on-going strategies. She continued her games, but she did so totally unaware that she had simply become entertaining, and her game playing transparent.
She was not so much making life difficult for the new principal as she was digging her own professional grave.
I was shown an issue of a national, now defunct, Gay publication that had an article about the ghost administrator and all that she had accomplished in her advocacy for the Gay students at the school.
What the author of the article clearly did not know about were the years of obstruction that went before her suddenly allowing the very things she had prevented, and her not only taking credit for it, but claiming that no one else had been able to do what she had done.
She carefully omitted to mention to the person interviewing her that the others could not accomplish those things because of her obstruction.
This is how I see the upcoming House and Senate,
After using the filibuster to prevent legislation in the Senate, Mitch McConnell will now bring up for debate and vote in the Senate those bills that benefit the American people, relying on the poor memory of those easily led who will not remember that these bills would have already passed had McConnell and the other GOP senators not blocked them.
He and the other GOP Senators will now pass the bills that they have been obstructing, adding in a few new ones that will help pay back what they owe to those who gave big money to their campaigns, claiming that they could only get passed if the GOP was in the majority.
They will attempt to take credit for finally being able to pass bills they could have already passed.
Sadly, as the Ghost administrator had hoped with her game, people will buy it.
