By the time most people will have read this blog post, my time reading at the 20th annual Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum will be over.
This is quite the event to which people from all over come to take part, whether as readers, which I have found is an honor sought by many, or to read along and attend various exhibit openings, lectures, and even a game whose object is to stump Melville Scholars.
On the first day, not only was there the reading of the chapters that could be covered before midnight in English as written, but a reading for children of an abridged version, one in Portuguese as an acknowledgement of the important part played in our domestic whale industry by the Islands of the Azores, and chapters in a variety of languages like French, Italian, Chinese (not sure which dialect), and even Hebrew followed by those chapters reread in English.
I got to talk with many of the readers, and got to meet and make friends with some of the Melville Scholars and members of the Melville Society.

In high school, when it came time to read Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”, we had to read the unabridged version.
To make sure we hadn’t read the abridged version, or just the Cliff Notes, while attempting to appear to have read the unabridged version, quizzes included questions on certain trivia points that only those who read the assigned version would get correct.
Did I mention the school was very strict?
Later, when I assigned the book as a college prep high school American Literature teacher, I allowed the students to read whichever version they chose.

The school at which I was teaching was located just down the hill from the provincial headquarters of the religious order that ran the school, and one of the old priests, finding that I had allowed my students to read jaws, something he considered to be officially promoting it, took a copy of the book and underlined all the F-bombs he found in it because someone he knew told them the book was filled with them.

I was not fired, but I was cautioned by the principal to be aware that in my teaching career I would encounter many people in authority who would fear teachers who thought outside the box and tried innovative teaching approaches, even though it would be a benefit to the students. Such thinking and innovation, because of their lack of imagination, represented an internalized threat to their self image and need to always appear to be the most informed in the room.
He was not wrong.
I mention this because this weekend, to a certain degree, I come full circle.
This weekend is the 20th year of the Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Along with activities that include the dedication of the Herman Melville Room at the museum and various lectures related to Melville, his book, and whaling in general, the marathon reading of “Moby Dick” begins at 12:00 noon on Saturday with the opening chapter, beginning with the famous first sentence, “Call me Ishmael”, being read my Nathaniel Philbrick, author of “In the Heart of the Sea”.
I am scheduled to begin my reading segment at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday morning, with the final reader scheduled to finish by 12:00 noon that day.
This is one of the big events, if not THE big event, at the museum, and I am glad I get to be a part of it.
I just hope that that inner imp in me does not tempt me, and then prevails in that attempt, to have me utter an F-bomb somewhere along the line for nostalgia’s sake.
But I will be thinking of Father Earl and those days forty years ago now.

I attended high school at what was called a “Juniorate”.
Simply defined, it was a residential high school seminary for boys who intended to join a particular religious order in the Catholic Church. Think, military school, but for religious vocations.
Times have changed, so such schools are a rarity now, but in the pre- and mid-Ecumenical Council days this was a common institution.
Education in just about everything was paramount, and what we were taught went far beyond the standard high school curriculum, and the methods to teach would today be considered very open and progressive.
Between supper and evening study hall we could either engage in various forms of physical recreation, or, because we lived at the school that was on 162 acres of land with various environments and eco-systems, take a long walk around the acreage with Father Stanley, a priest from what was then Yugoslavia, who had a great breadth of knowledge when it came to terrestrial nature and the heavens.
As we walked he would point out the constellations and tell stories about their origins and the Greek myths upon which they were based, and, if we happened upon some creature, he would tell us what it was, what its Latin name was, and any information about it that he knew, which was usually quite a bit.
Although the school followed the state’s standard science curriculum, we learned far beyond it on those walks.
If he had one area of expertise that went beyond just about everything else, even the bees he kept for honey and wax, it was birds.
He could identify birds even at a great distance and often only by sound, and would tell us everything he knew about them.
A quiet man and very unassuming, he was well known in the local bird watching community, and was often consulted by groups of watchers about various migratory birds as they trekked through the school property and the miles of forests and fields near it observing them.
The stereotype of the nerdish and retreating bird watcher was unknown to anyone who met the people who would show up occasionally to share information and observations with Fr. Stanley, and would be dispelled anyway by the real people of all ages who would tramp through the woods, fields, and swamps for hours in the search, perhaps, for one particular species of bird that may be observable on any given day.
An assault on a local bird habitat would meet with opposition and action which, although understated and seemingly calm, had strength behind it much like that look your mother would give you that froze your soul if she did not approve of what you were doing while no one saw her move as your life flashed before your eyes.
I think that, forgetting the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a bird sanctuary important to bird watchers, the extremists who took it over had no idea that as strong as they feel about, and are willing to act when it comes to ranching, there are those just as strong when it comes to birds and their habitats.

Wildlife photographers and wildlife/bird watchers now number some 40 million people in the USA, and feed many rural western economies with our tourism dollars, and we will not stand for your sedition.”
And, then he points out this little tidbit,
“You will never see us, but we and our cameras will always see you. We will #takebackmalheur from you terrorists, and will not rest until every one of you thugs and poachers is behind bars where you belong.”
The Harney County Migratory Bird Festival is a major source of revenue for local businesses, and after pointing out they know who the local is who is supplying the extremists with necessities, Kevin warns, “a tourist boycott of them is already in the works for all birders for this upcoming bird season. We know who everyone is coming in and out, and why, and every shred of information is going straight to law enforcement and across every birding network in America.”
He writes that he, and others like him are:
“sick to death of you welfare queens and cheats living off of BLM land, illegally gutting our wilderness and our wildlife. Malheur, Hart Mountain, Klamath Marsh, Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite etc etc, they all belong to us, we the American people.”

The Plan
Here’s how the plan will go down.
There is a movement among the members of the GOP to seize and sell off America’s national forests and other public lands.
This would mean that land presently accessible to the public, that would be We the People, would be sold to private companies where they could mine and drill for the fossil fuels that lie beneath. Then they can charge the American people for it and make huge profits.
In 2015 Representative Rob Bishop, a Utah Republican and chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, proposed that America’s public lands be transferred to state control at a cost of $50 million of taxpayer money to enable the transfers.
The states would have to begin selling the land off for private use because owning the land would add a new budget item to states leaving states having to raise taxes, open recreation areas to drilling and mining, or sell lands to private interests.
The American Lands Council (ALC), an organization founded by Utah State Representative Ken Ivory, another Republican, hired a lobbyist to “educate congressional lawmakers on the benefits of relinquishing federal lands to the states.” The lobbyist got $150,000 for just three months work which was, by the way, taxpayer money.
One of the lobbyist clients is a Utah mining company.
47 county governments have spent more than $219,000 for ALC membership which, because they get federal money in the form of Payment in Lieu of Taxes Program (PILT), which is also taxpayer money, is a violation of the Byrd Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds from a grant to be used for lobbying federal officials.
Surprisingly (NOT), all this sudden desire to sell off public lands is the result of efforts by the Koch-backed American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

When a vote was held in 2015 to sell off public lands, these senators voted to do so.
Although there are those involved in the Oregon bird sanctuary takeover who claim the high road and claim to be Constitutionalists who hold that the Constitution does not allow the government to hold public land, it would seem there is something behind this that we are not supposed to notice.
If this group were that into their principles, why do these ranchers have no problem with the 93% discount they get on fees for using public land, and why would its leader, Ammon Bundy, have accepted a half million dollar government business loan to help his private company in Arizona?
Who will benefit from the sale of public land?
The fossil fuel industry and their puppets in Washington.
Perhaps the Bundys might profit from this, but will those they led into the insurgence get anything more than the feeling they have won something?
That is until any reasonable people among them find they have been used for the benefit of others.
