The new Easter message

Easter is coming.
Easter, the very kernel belief of Christianity, the religion of love. After all, God is love and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him.
That means that this year would have been the 17th annual Easter Sunrise Service in Stockton, California.
If you have never been to a sunrise service it can be quite impressive. Here you are looking toward the east to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, and when the sun comes up the imagery is rather obvious.
But this year the organizer and Stockton, California’s Police Chaplain Jim Reid, invited a GLBT-inclusive church to attend the citywide Easter celebrations.
All churches in the town were invited.
Now for those who don’t know, a “GLBT-inclusive Church” is not a “Gay church” with a Gay congregation. It is an all inclusive one that welcomes everyone without judging them, but rather makes a space for people to commune with their God as they perceive the deity to be. They promote a personal relationship with the creator without deciding whether or not you should be allowed to have one.
Many established denominations have inclusive churches and follow the tradition of the denomination’s services without any special adaptions. Where you might have been pushed away by a less, or non-inclusive church, at this one You feel comfortable being there and no one gives you the side-eye.
Reid later took back the invite after realizing that the Valley Ministries is a GLBT-affirming church because,
“We are diametrically different in our view of scripture when it comes to homosexuality.”
But the other denominations were still invited even though they may be “diametrically different in our view of scripture”, and at least in one major one when it comes to the Eucharist where some Christian churches see it as a representation of the body and blood of Christ while at least one other, the Roman Catholic Church, believes that through Transubstantiation it is the real deal.

The reason for the total cancellation of the sunrise service was because the service’s “transforming message will be overshadowed as a result of the well-publicised clergy invitations.”
Reid said that if Valley Ministries were allowed to take part, it would lead to “a media frenzy”.

The chairman of its board “felt it would defeat the purpose of having it. I didn’t think it would bring glory and honor to God. I was in favor of canceling.”
The pastor of Valley Ministries has expressed her concern.
“It’s just disheartening to me that here these folks claim to be Christians … and are squandering this opportunity because of some perceived differences instead of uniting under the banner of what this day is supposed to mean. This is based on fear and not on grace and love. It’d be great if we could have truly a citywide Easter service. Where when you use the label citywide, it should mean everybody.”
So the tradition of apostles deciding who could and who could not approach Jesus, even as this annoyed Jesus Himself, continues.

Some day I will relate how I eventually came to realizing and then accepting who and what I am, but for now, suffice it to say that the timing was really bad as I entered my Gay life just as the AIDS epidemic hit big.

But almost every day some one would inform us in a lowered voice who had just been diagnosed with HIV, and who had died.
I didn’t t know many of the names of those that, if things had been different, I may have met, but now I would never meet them, but instead saw how their passing was affecting the people I was getting to know.
My community was getting smaller before I could experience how large it had been, but would not be again.
The Gay Community of my generation was getting wiped out.
Needless to say, AIDS was not a casual topic. Everything about it was read and discussed. While it should have been everyone’s concern, the Gay community was on its own to deal with the disease,to invent ways to deal with caring for each other, to construct support networks, and to find the nonjudgmental doctors who would deal with it without attempting to instill shame.

This is an example of pandering going too far.
It’s more serious than an “oopsie” that can be excused with a grin and a shrug.

I’m sure that anyone reading this has seen the list of presidents who, instead of attending the funeral of former first Ladies, sent the one who was in the White House at the time to attend.
Ronald Reagan did not attend the funeral of Bess Truman.
Jimmie Carter did not attend the funeral of Mamie Eisenhower.
Bill Clinton was not at the Funeral of Pat Nixon.
President George W Bush did not attend the funeral of Lady Bird Johnson.
Each president sent the First Lady.
And just FYI, Reagan on the day of Bess Truman’s Funeral was in Chapin, Illinois giving a speech to farmers at the end of which he drove off on a tractor, while during Lady Bird Johnson’s funeral W was playing Tee Ball on the South Lawn of the White House.
All the First Ladies had been good people and had brought something to the White House.

President Obama has been disrespected by the very politicians and their constituents who got all upset with one statement against W by one member of the Dixie Chicks while their own disrespectful words and treatment against Obama has been ongoing and has been much stronger and more strident.
More proof of the bigotry toward the president is the sliding scale of importance as illustrated by the Nancy Reagan funeral flap.

But obviously with the sliding scale, since Michelle Obama is not worthy of being a First Lady, Obama is expected to fill that slot because he is not worthy enough to be in the top position of president, so he has to assume the level of First Lady.
Other than the myth of Reagan based on misrepresentation of reality, Nancy Reagan has somehow gained some sort of special First Lady standing when in reality, other than being the President’s wife and playing her role, and having the totally useless Just Say No initiative, she’s been given some special status for really no reason.
How is she better than any of the other First Ladies on the list?
While she herself did not do much more than look dreamily at Ronnie and act with the same dignity of first ladies before and after, she is somehow seen as something special by Reagan’s admirers who fail to see that their hero is not seen that same way by many others.
Some of us remember his arms for hostage deal, his ruining the lives of public employees, his stealing from Social security to make up for revenue lost by his tax cuts, his raising taxes 11 times, the 200,000 people who died of AIDS while he tacitly agreed it was a punishment from God not worthy of speaking of or funding research to end it, and the over 300 executive orders that should have been considered just as unconstitutional as Obama’s much fewer have been..
But, Somehow President Obama has requirements on him that his predecessors did not have, and to me, anyway, there is only one difference between him and the other presidents who were also elected by we the people.
Empathy?
In the myopic and biased outrage that President Obama should, unlike the presidents before him, attend the funeral of Nancy Reagan, one person posted his opinion on FaceBook that said that the president should go because she was much more than a First Lady.
I had no idea what that meant, but in my experience, although she knew how to act as a Hollywood star, she actually wasn’t any more a first Lady than any of the others before or since.
I was around during the Reagan years, the real ones, not the stuff of promoted myth, and my memories of her are that she, like many in her Party, lacked empathy for those not in her class.
By definition, “empathy” is the vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another. It is feeling through the experiences of others without having to experience them yourself.
I do not have to be hungry to feel for those who are and understand how it might affect them in order to do what I can to reduce their condition.
There have been a number of stories in various news outlets lately, some causing a degree of joy among some of the ACA’s supporters, where conservatives who had done what they could to eliminate the Affordable Care Act have changed their attitude when they were helped by its existence.
While others were sick, the act was no good. It was evil incarnate.
They got sick, hooray for it.
Somehow we are supposed to cheer for them while we forget how hard they tried to eliminate it for others.
Dick Cheney was strongly against Gay Rights, until his daughter came out of the closet, and now he is for them.
Until it hit home, he opposed them.
When people with AIDS were dying in the hundreds and then the thousands back in the 80s, it was no big deal. The government chose not to get involved until it was discovered that it wasn’t a Gay thing and that straight people had actually been dying from its complications, but, not being Gay, no one had taken notice.
When it was discovered it had already been hitting home, things changed.
It was no longer them, so it was no longer okay.
When stem cell research was being heavily debated and strongly opposed by the Party of Reagan, and while research was considered as a possible lead to preventing and curing Alzheimer’s, politicians discussed it in an extremely impersonal way until Ronnie Reagan was found to be suffering from it, and people, including Nancy Reagan, became very strong in their support of that research.

Wasn’t his wedding. Wasn’t His reputation. He could have simply walked way, but He didn’t.
He gave sight to the blind even though His own was divinely 20/20.

He cured people He had never met, and from a distance, because it was good for those other people that He did so.
He had empathy.
It’s too bad his followers don’t.
An since most of them have made money while in Washington, beyond appealing to their constituents with promises, they seem to be incapable of actually doing what is best for them because, well, they are only needed for their votes.
And the politicians aren’t hungry, unable to meet their bills, or facing unemployment.
Yet.
My Nancy Reagan connection
During the Reagan years, I taught Special Education at a middle school in Carson, California, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Although my students had certain learning disabilities, they were not mentally handicapped, but were of average to better intelligence who just had something that kept them from grasping various school subjects and were behind their peers in achievement.
My job was to find ways for them to get around what was limiting them, and get them educated.
One example was teaching them Algebra simply by teaching a math game where by following certain rules they could find the missing number. They were good at it.
Eventually they found they had been fooled into learning a branch of math they had been told they were too stupid to be able to learn, and were very proud of themselves that they had proved people wrong.
One time, going through a storage closet near the school library, I found an unused video camera, one of those cameras that in the 80s was considered compact but now could be used as an end table, and got the principal’s permission to use it in my classroom. With it I got my kids to improve their writing as they needed to come up with scripts; increase their ability to work in groups as they were part of the cast or production crew and had to follow directions and work as a team; and got them reading more about the world around them as they needed to find ideas for videos.
My students eventually became the inspiration for a district wide contest involving the use of video in the classroom as a learning tool, either in production or viewing, and became the case study to justify to the state government in Sacramento why the Los Angeles school district’s television production facility should continue to receive funding.
One day, I decided to teach a complicated lesson.
I had been explaining satire and the author’s pleasure in pulling something over on an audience who thought they were fully grasping the message they were actually missing as it was the opposite, even if the author was the only one who knew what was going on, a personal inside joke.
I had also explained to the students that even though they and those around them may think they were of no consequence, if they took the initiative, they could actually promote themselves to a point beyond what they and others assumed was as far as they could go.

At a designated time, and with curious guests in the classroom, like the school’s administrative staff, some secretaries, and teachers on their planning period, I opened the envelope and read the letter to my class who knew that even though they had not been sincere in their video, the person who viewed it praise them for making it.
I would be remiss if I did not mention that when we discussed current events in Social Studies class I did not hold back on my opinions of the events of the day and the people involved. My students would often throw in what was said at home about the same, and the opinions of my students, and apparently their families, were similar to mine when it came to the Reagans, especially Nancy who always seemed starry eyed to them as if she was on one of the drugs she should have said “no” to.
After I read the letter aloud to my class and those who had come from the office for the “official” unsealing of the envelope and the reading of its content, I passed the letter around so the class could read it themselves.
They handled it with great reverence as it bore the real signature of Nancy Reagan, and, as it made its way from desk to desk, one student held it for a moment, turned it upside down, pulled it close to his eyes, and then started laughing.
It struck him that Nancy Reagan’s signature, when looked at upside down, began with the word “nobody”, and the student saw the upside down Nancy part as “home”.
As the letter continued around the room the initial reverence that it was met with as it changed hands became laughter as the subsequent viewers all agreed that Nancy Reagan’s signature when turned became “Nobody Home”.
From that point on, that is how my students referred to Nancy Reagan.

In attempt to simply obstruct President Obama again, the GOP in the senate claims they are doing the right thing by refusing to even consider allowing a vote on or even a meeting with his nominee for the Supreme Court.
Ignoring that the president was elected twice to do the job of president, they claim they need to wait until after the next election because the nominee should comply with the will of the people.
Apparently people elected Obama twice without expressing their will.
But that ruse loses its supposed validity when Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson recently called for a PERMANENT blockade of any nominee by President Obama or his successor if that person is a Democrat.
So if the will of the people is to have a Democrat as president, it should be ignored.
For those who are not familiar with Senator Ron Johnson:
He condemned “The Lego Movie” because the bad guy is a heartless businessman intent on destroying the world for profit.
“That’s done for a reason. They’re starting that propaganda, and it’s insidious.”
He actually took the hit on the evil businessman character personally because in 2010 when he faced off against Russ Feingold, he felt he was compelled to because
“I was sitting home, watching Fox News, and Dick Morris came on and said… ‘If you’re a rich guy from Wisconsin, step up to the plate. And I kinda looked at [my wife] Jane and go, ‘Is he like talking to me?’”
While claiming there should be no negative feelings toward him as a rich guy because he is a self made man, he actually made his money as an executive at a plastics company owned by his father-in-law, a company that then paid for what was referred to in the press as a self-financed campaign in 2010.
So, like Trump who thinks a million dollar gift from his father means he is a self-made man just like the Schlepp who starts his business with a small bank loan and a lot of hope, Johnson made himself by marrying the right woman.
He was so eager to demonstrate his opposition to the Affordable Care Act that he filed a lawsuit against “Obamacare” in order to make coverage more expensive for people who work on Capitol Hill. H claimed not doing that was a presidential “abuse of executive authority.”

In the build up to the it-never-happened Ebola outbreak, Johnson said he saw the threat of ISIS militants intentionally infecting themselves with the Ebola virus and then traveling to America as a “real and present danger.”
“Well, it’s certainly something I’ve been thinking about ever since this Ebola outbreak started. You really don’t even want to think about. You really don’t even want to talk about, but we should do everything possible to defend ourselves against that possibility because I think that is a real and present danger.”
FBI Director James Comey had to point out, that this was not happening.
Johnson also believes that affordable contraception is easily distributed over the Internet, “sunspot activity” is responsible for global warming, the Great Recession ended before President Obama took office, and sees public investment in alternative energy as roughly the same thing as “the Soviet Union.”
And now he has announced that the senate should wait for the people to express their will about a Supreme Court nominee, but if the GOP does not agree with their expression, they should simply ignore it.
Family values
Bill O’Reilly speaks strongly about family values, and freely points to people he believes do not have them.
He has lectured African Americans on how to raise their families, and has blamed problems within the Black community on “no supervision, kids with no fathers.”

He supports traditional marriage and strong families. He’s Catholic, after all, and his religion is important to him. He will not compromise on it.

In 1996 O’Reilly married Maureen McPhilmy and they had two children, Madeline and Spencer.
Then in 2010 they couple separated and finalized their divorce in 2011.
Although they had initially agreed to share custody of their children, Maureen McPhilmy returned to court the year after the divorce seeking full custody of her children because O’Reilly had violated conditions of the agreement.
During the child custody fight the ex-couple’s teenage daughter told a court-appointed forensic examiner that she witnessed Bill choking her mother as he dragged her down some stairs by her neck.

Originally agreeing to joint custody, O’Reilly lost custody and appealed the ruling, but the appeals court ruled that since his school-age children don’t want to live with him anymore, they should live exclusively with their mother considering the clearly stated preferences of the children and the quality of the home environment provided by her.
While the court awarded sole residential custody to McPhilmy, it decided that O’Reilly and McPhilmy should continue to share legal custody when it came to the schools they attend, medical care they receive, and their religion they practice.
O’Reilly had demanded sole legal custody instead.
Back in January 2013 McPhilmy discovered that the supposedly neutral therapist chosen to arbitrate custodial disagreements had been hired by O’Reilly to “perform virtually all of his parental duties.”
According to Court papers.
“The parties entered into a separation agreement on April 2, 2010, pursuant to which they agreed to share legal and residential custody of the children on alternating weeks. They also agreed, inter alia, that the children’s therapist would act as a neutral mediator to help them resolve any parenting disputes”,
but,
“On October 19, 2011….. the mother further alleged that, after the execution of the agreement, the father had hired the children’s therapist as a full-time employee to perform virtually all of his parental duties.”
Apparently the problems in the Black community that result from “kids with no fathers” could be addressed if Black people were able to hire surrogate fathers like O’Reilly did.
O’Reilly has filed a contempt of court action against his wife because he believes she has been interfering with the custody arrangement for their 17-year-old daughter who has repeatedly refused to visit her father on the days designated for them to be together.
She is the one who saw the dragging down the stairs incident, and obviously may be a little fearful of her father.
The Flip-Flop has returned.
Remember back when Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts and became the father of “Romneycare” which then became a model for “Obamacare”, but when running for president in 2012 he did everything he could to have people forget that because he wanted conservative votes?
Well he’s at this flip-flopping again.
Yes, that flip-flopping thing he does so well, like when he was for Gay equality as governor, but against it as a presidential candidate.
Back in 2012, he wanted Donald Trump’s support because

And why was that endorsement such a positive thing?
“Donald Trump has shown an extraordinary ability to understand how our economy works, to create jobs for the American people. He’s done it here in Nevada; he’s done it across the country.
He understands that our economy is facing threats from abroad. He’s one of the few people who stood up and said, you know what, China has been cheating — they’ve taken jobs from Americans, they haven’t played fair. We have to have a president who will stand up to cheaters. We believe in free trade and free enterprise — but we don’t believe in allowing people to cheat, day in and day out.
So I want to say thank you to Donald Trump for his endorsement. It means a great deal to me to have the endorsement of Mr. Trump, and people across this country who care about the future of America.”
But now in 2016 when people had hoped he would run for president, and his jumping in now could really get his party out of the mess it is in, a mess of its own creation, he has announced that the man whose endorsement was such a delight is actually a “phony” and a “fraud” who has stoked racism, sexism, vulgarity, and otherwise lowered the level of the public discourse.
“If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished.”
Why?
“If Donald Trump’s plans were ever implemented, the country would sink into prolonged recession” because “His proposed 35 percent tariff-like penalties would instigate a trade war and that would raise prices for consumers, kill our export jobs and lead entrepreneurs and businesses of all stripes to flee America.
His tax plan in combination with his refusal to reform entitlements and honestly address spending would balloon the deficit and the national debt. So even though Donald Trump has offered very few specific economic plans, what little he has said is enough to know that he would be very bad for American workers and for American families.”
As far as Trump’s business successes that Romney had praised
when he got that earlier endorsement,

And after listing Trump’s business failures, Romney declared,

Romney even declared that Trump is a liar when it comes to a lot of things he says.
“Dishonesty is Donald Trump’s hallmark.”
He listed Trump’s bad qualities: bullying, greed, showing off, misogyny, absurd third grade theatrics, his being a con man, and a fake “who has changed his positions not just over the years, but over the course of the campaign. And on the Ku Klux Klan, daily for three days in a row.”
He went on to declare, “He creates scapegoats of Muslims and Mexican immigrants. He calls for the use of torture. He calls for killing the innocent children and family members of terrorists. He cheers assaults on protesters. He applauds the prospect of twisting the Constitution to limit First Amendment freedom of the press.
This is the very brand of anger that has led other nations into the abyss.”
He cautioned,
“His domestic policies would lead to recession. His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe. He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.”
And when people speculated that all this was Romney’s way of preparing us for announcing his intention to run for president, Romney flatly denied that.
“I’m not running for president and I won’t run for president,” Romney said on March 4.
But put on your flip-flops and step back a pace or two.
In late January and early February of this year, and prior to his we-need-to-oppose-Trump speech, Romney’s campaign finance entities, Romney for President and his PAC, Romney Victory Fund, were both reactivated with amended campaign statements filed with the FEC making them legally able to solicit donations and organize for a presidential campaign.
Romney will now be able to collect campaign contributions and coordinate fundraising activities with other organizations that already include the Idaho Republican Party, the Massachusetts Republican Party, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, the Oklahoma Leadership Council, the Vermont Republican Federal Elections Committee, and the Republican National Committee.
He loves Trump.
He hates Trump.
