another quid pro quo?

The general belief is that those in military service are fighting to preserve the ”Homeland”, a term that bothers me slightly as it has a fascist ring to it that ”our country” doesn’t, and we thank them for their service because they face death for those of us who are back home and we want them  know we appreciate that.

We see an honorable dignity in what they do.

Last week, however, Trump revealed a changed to the nature of our armed forces when he told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that along with his positive relationship with Saudi Arabia, that country is paying to use American troops.

“Saudi Arabia is paying us for [our troops]. We have a very good relationship with Saudi Arabia. I said, listen, you’re a very rich country. You want more troops? I’m going to send them to you, but you’ve got to pay us. They’re paying us. They’ve already deposited $1 billion in the bank.”

It’s as if they are tools at his disposal that he can rent out to his friends.

This means they are not necessarily fighting for the homeland, but are being rented out to another country to fight their war(s), regardless the reason for it, and they must remain for the length of time the payment covers.

The standard business arrangement.

Mechanism of action: Kamagra contains sildenafil citrate, which is known to be one of the healthiest diets as it is rich in omega 6 fatty acids and is great for sexual health. cialis lowest prices The therapeutic use of homeopathic remedies is based on scientific study and includes pain relieving levitra generic cialis modalities, like ultrasound and TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). Why should a country that has money and a good relationship with us, or more specifically Trump, send their youth off to war when they can pay us to do it, as our troops continue to get their regular pay while the country makes money off of them?

Trump is using our troops as mercenaries.

“We are going to help them, but these rich countries have to pay for it. South Korea gave us $500 million… I said, ‘You gotta help us along. We have 32,000 soldiers in South Korea protecting you from North Korea. You’ve gotta pay.’”

Representative Justin Amish a conservative who recently left the Republican Party, tweeted the succinct,

“He sells troops.”

Renting our military for the use of other countries goes contrary to Trump’s campaign promise to bring the troops home, as moving them to a new location, for a price, doesn’t actually do that.

And think of the convenience to the renter. They get fresh troops in good condition and send them home as-is when their usefulness is over either individually or as a group.

One giant(faulty) leap

I have written about the sheriff of Bristol County Massachusetts, Thomas Hodgson, in the past.

Because of his systematic cruelty toward people in his custody; his denying basic health care, medically assisted treatment, and nutritious food; his having the highest suicide rate among 13 county jails in the state; exploiting families through over-priced phone calls and canteen purchases; his lack of programs/policies that help people stay out of jail; and his constant travel to Washington DC on the taxpayers’ dime, a group I belong to, Bristol County for Correctional Justice (BCCJ) has called for a march from downtown New Bedford to the Ash Street Jail, also in New Bedford, on Saturday, January 18 starting at 1:00 pm.

I was on a Saturday morning radio show on what is a rather conservative station on the South Coast to advertise the event.

In the course of my time on air I was able to explain the above points and our desire to have the sheriff resign if he would rather be a national figure with obvious ties, or attempts to solidify ties, with the Trump administration than do his actual job.

I did my best to stay with facts and avoid personal opinion.

There were two topics that came up that were of interest to me, and, since he brought them up, the radio show host.

BCCJ has uncovered facts that show that the sheriff’s anti-immigrant attitudes are fueled by his involvement with FAIR, (Federation for American Immigration Reform), in reality an anti-immigrant group that relies heavily on bigotry, but there are those, among them the local media, who claim that this is wishful speculation as we had nothing more definite as proof than his attendance at their meetings and his being on their National Board of Advisors and listed as such on the organization’s website.

On the radio after my scheduled appearance and I had left the studio unaware he was going to have his say by phone, the sheriff countered the assertion that we taxpayers foot the bill for his self-promoting trips by stating that FAIR has paid for his attendance at meetings.

Obviously, ours was not wishful speculation

The other topic, and the one that really got the radio show host’s attention, was the idea that the sheriff would have reported his church to the White House via email for its having pamphlets advising all immigrants on how to deal with ICE if at any time they have interactions.

There is a large immigrant community on the South Coast of Massachusetts, and, so, there is a strong chance people will have those interactions.

The pamphlets gave instructions on how to handle these interactions without complicating them through fear. The Talking with your spouse about impotence can be very helpful in improving your cialis order online sex life. It is an oral drug used as the ingredients that work as great rejuvenator and overall health enhancer. levitra prescription http://greyandgrey.com/youtube/ For many people Drivers ED brings back memories of the gym teacher showing horrifying automotive accidents during a sweating room. cialis for cheap price These drugs stimulate the natural functioning of nitric oxide in the body. levitra generic cheap content of the pamphlets was as important as explaining to drivers how to act if pulled over by a police officer since, as innocent as the driver might be or how minor the reason to have been pulled over might be, a simple event could escalate to something major if the driver’s nerves take control and he or she panics.

The email stated,

“Stephen [Miller], thought you might like to see samples of cards I discovered in a holder at the back of St. Julie’s Church in Dartmouth, MA. While attending mass last Sunday, I noticed a holder on a table near the entrance marked, ‘ICE-Immigration’ and noticed the three stacks of colored cards. Trying to determine if this is an isolated situation or a common occurrence in other parish churches.”

According the sheriff when he spoke on the radio, he had been standing at the back of the church during mass with the ushers when a man came in and stood behind the last pew as if he was checking out those in the church before quietly leaving.

The sheriff said he became concerned because the man might have been checking out the scene in order to go get a weapon and return to shoot up the church. And that is why, according to the sheriff, he reported his church to the White House because of the immigrant related pamphlets.

Considering that most mass shootings are perpetrated by citizens, and white ones for that matter, that was quite a leap in logic.

He could have just as easily justified reporting on the ushers as they were standing at the back of the church looking over the congregation when their only job is to lead people to open seats in a crowded church before mass and passing the collection plates, and should have been sitting and participating in the standing, sitting, kneeling, and singing the rest of the time.

He added that that same man could have observed where his intended target was sitting and then could conveniently take a seat close to him and shoot that person at close range.

But that is his logic.

He went on further to explain that while the email to Miller, Trump’s immigration policy architect, had been sent two years ago, he had only talked with his pastor after the email became public, not before sending it or even after, but only when he had been caught two years after the fact for having sent it.

He loosely uses the rather subliminal term ”criminal illegal aliens” when speaking of anyone in Bristol County without documentation, so that people will unconsciously get a very negative and fear filled impression of these people so that whatever he does will be accepted as best for the rest of us.

He cannot refer to facts to justify his bigotry, so he plays Hop-Scotch with logic.

He needs to go, and people need to make that known , and then make it happen.

Don’t throw in the towel

I groan whenever someone, especially someone under 30, moans about the sad state of affairs in this country and how they will just give up if things don’t happen fast.

Two Words.

LONG GAME.

Not even instant coffee is instant. It takes time to boil the water.

If the prize is worth it, the fight lasts as long as it takes.

The GLBT Community in Massachusetts may have pretty much the same rights as non-GLBT people, but it hasn’t been that long that it is so, and the fight to get us here was a long, incremental process that actually began in the early 1950s with the Mattachine Society that was replaced by a more militant approach after Stonewall, and considering we just celebrated the 50th anniversary of that rebellion this past June, simple math shows that made for a 70 year fight.

And even then, Transgender people here had a longer fight.

You might have been born when the goals had been reached, but it wasn’t that long before you were born that conditions were not, as some assume, as they are.

The Civil War was supposed to end slavery and give full citizenship to the former slaves and their descendants. It took another hundred years to make most of that actually happen, but it is not fully realized.

Women got the vote in 1920 after a long struggle and decades after Abigail Adams had advised John Adams not to forget the women, but the Equal Rights Amendment has yet to be ratified, and that battle goes back to the 1970s.

These battles have been multi-generational with most of the warriors never seeing the victories they sought.

The majority of those who benefited never had to fight, and, sadly, have no idea what it took and, unfortunately, assume things will always remain, or, forgetting it was never easy in the first place, give up at the first obstacle if they have to fight to regain what they should have never lost.

If a preferred candidate does not get a nomination, as has happened, that’s it for the election. If a proposal is not given a go-ahead, or a rejection letter arrives in the mail, progress  ends and a career dies.

When the March for Our Lives did not produced an immediate change in gun laws, for some that was it.

We have an election coming up, and there is a 50/50 chance it can go either way for any number of reasons. If it goes one way there will be a need for fighting to preserve and defend followed by work at restoration and rehabilitation in four years; another way and it will mean a few years of planning and working toward a better world after.

Either way, it means work, and much of it.

We either throw in the towel and meekly accept, or pull up our big boy pants and get to work.

Previously a school department suggestion I had assumed would be accomplished in short order as it was a no brainer, took 12 years to be realized after many opportunities and excuses to just walk away.

I have been involved for the last three years in a major project to right a wrong. Those of us who were doing the work, the research, and informing the public had the gnawing feeling we were those voices crying in the wilderness until recently when another group took an action that not only showed they had been paying attention, but they had based future actions on what we had done.

I know people fighting the never-ending battle for social justice who have been doing it for decades, celebrating their successes or regrouping when necessary. Their progress has been slow, but steady. They know they will never see the final results, but they still work for them for the sake of those who will benefit.

Simple advice.

Don’t throw in the towel. Fold it, put it away, and get back to it after a break from it.

Regroup, keep fighting.

it’s a secret

Whenever Trump goes on vacation, he chooses one of his properties that require billing for the room and board of the Secret Service and the golf cart rental fees for them to keep up with him on the links, along with the money made from the price of meals of members and guests who want to whisper in his ear or be present in case he blurts out something juicy.

While the taxpayers pay for the trips and trappings, we don’t see any of the money his properties rake in.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump told us that he would “rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done”, but since he took office he has regularly spent long weekends at Trump-branded properties, in 2019 spending one of every five days at a golf club.

We paid about $96 million on travel by President Obama and his family over the course of eight years, and when Trump brought that up on the campaign trail his rally crowds cheered when he called those trips unnecessary and said he would go to fewer place and spend less money.

However, estimates are that Trump may have cost the taxpayers more than that in his first year in office alone.

Year to date he has spent 114 days at Mar A Lago with plane flights costing $51,400,000, and 75 days at Bedminster with plane flights costing $18,375,500.

He has gone to his own properties every 4.5 day on average.

If he keeps this up, he will have visited these properties 323 times in his first term, and potentially 646 in total by the end of his second.

For the What Aboutists who will want to defend Trump by comparison to his predecessor, as of this writing, from 2017 to 2020 he has surpassed Obama’s golf trips in 8 years by 17 in three.

We pay for the Secret Service each time, so it stands to reason that we taxpayers should know how much money we are spending on them for these trips.

Yet, the White House has refused to share information about the costs of Trump’s travel with the Government Accountability Office.

Democratic senators are demanding the Secret Service disclose the cost of these trips within 120 days, but Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin wants to delay the reporting until after the 2020 election preferring an annual report to Congress beginning in 2021.

Trump promised to release his taxes once he was elected, but then didn’t.

Will people fall for that again as he runs for reelection?

Remember a few years ago when the Taliban blew up the Buddhas of Bamiyana at the foot of cliffs in central Afghanistan, committing an act of cultural vandalism on the two tallest Buddhas in the world which had stood for more than 1,500 years ? Their destruction was part of its campaign to destroy pre-Islamic artifacts considered an assault on Islam.

The Buddhas were Afghanistan’s most famous tourist attraction.

The world, including Muslim countries, had objected when the impending action was made known.

How about the time when the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) destroyed Assyrian statues and artifacts believed to be 3000 years old?

There was near universal outrage.

And that time al Qaeda destroyed 15th century shrines in the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu, which was called an attack on humanity and a possible war crime?

Or people going ballistic when a video of Takfiri militants of the al-Qaeda-linked an-Nusra Front desecrating a small statue of Mary, mother of Jesus, in northwestern Syria went viral?

Add to those the Mosque of the Prophet Yunus, one of the most important mosques in Mosul, blown up by Islamic State in July 2014; the Adad and Mashqi Gates of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh destroyed by Islamic State in early 2015; Krak des Chavaliers, one of the most well-preserved castles in the world, inhabited by Kurdish troops in the 11th century, shelled during the Syrian Civil War in 2012, and was further damaged by airstrikes in 2013; the Lion of Al-Lāt statue in the ancient city of Palmyra destroyed by the Islamic State In June 2015; and the ancient Iraqi city of Hatra, built in the 2nd and 3rd centuries destroyed by Islamic State militants in March 2015.

These were all seen as war crimes and assaults on culture because these gates, mosques, statues, and other artifacts were not part of any military actions, and exist now only in pictures and will not be seen otherwise by all future generations.

The 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, created in the aftermath of World War II, made it a war crime to target cultural sites, and states,

“Damage to cultural property belonging to any people whatsoever means damage to the cultural heritage of all mankind.”

After the killing of Qasem Soleimani and Iran’s announcement of retaliation, Trump crowed,

“Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST.”

He announced he intended to commit a crime, actually 52 of them.

Kid. you need to fight our war

When it come to war, the princes declare them and the peasants fight them. When the war is over, the princes get something they wanted, or, if they lose, spend the time between that war and the next one plotting how they could reverse that. For them, something is gained, while those who do the fighting go home to the same lives and the same conditions they had been living.

Every leader, whether lawfully in that position or through the improper use of power, eventually is dead, and the conditions that people died for have changed, sometimes in ways that totally cancel what the leader had people die for.

Unless there is some unfortunate event, Donald Trump could live another 20 years and die in his 90s. In that 20 years he could increase his financial standing and increase his social life counting some important people among his friends. He could be Big Man On Campus with the world as his campus.

Then he will be gone until the end of time and beyond.

A 20 year old who fights in the soon to be next war will be 40 at the end of that same 20 year period living an additional 50+ years if he or she lives as long as Trump might.  That is 50 years of dealing with the results of a war both nationally and personally.

Oh, we might think those who die will be on in our memories with gratitude for their sacrifice, but veteran cemeteries are filled with people no one remembers. Those who are maimed physically or mentally have a long haul ahead of them, and few will actually care.

And for what?

Men may be advised to avoid such things for a healthy love life. tadalafil generic If you know buy sildenafil canada view this now someone who is suffering from this, it can be painful, sad, distressful and frustrating for him and partner too. A temporary and fleeting betterment of someone else’s life with no tangible benefit to themselves but the empty phrase, “Thank you for your service”?

One will die soon and happy. The rest will be around for years.

That’s how war works. A temporary fix that benefits the leaders and their offspring until they pass and things change for the next leader and kids.

World War I was the war to end all wars, concessions were made after thousand were kill, and we are far from the results of that war.

While others’ sons and daughters go off to war, the children of those who never fought a war will themselves sit this one out, but collect the benefits.

As Tom Paxton Wrote

“When kings make war
The poor little men must fight them
They must do more
They hold out their necks
For great lord’s swords to bite them
The sons of lords cleave through their ranks
In the hopes some warrior king might knight them
It’s what the poor little men are for
When kings make war.”

There will be appeals to patriotism and purposeful division between an us and them promoted by claims of patriotism, but there will be nothing behind those claims. Flag makers will make a killing, military arms manufactures will make huge profits, politician and businessmen will reap benefits, and all those who fight will be thanked for their services and forgotten until those same politicians can use them to promote themselves.

And while others’ kids go off to war, the politicians’ kids will stay home and cheer them on.
