Attempting to kill the two proverbial birds with the necessary single rock, on Monday, when honoring ICE at the White House, Trump presented immigrants as criminals and a danger to the country, and the Democrats as the enemy of what it means to be American when he said,
“I think we’re going to have much more of a red wave than what you’re going to see as a phony blue wave. Blue wave means crime, it means open borders. Not good.”
He claimed in his remarks that Democrats wanted open borders and supported increased crime.
Because some Democrats do not approve of some of ICE’s tactic, that means they hate ICE and by extension open borders according to Trump.
My problem with ICE is that they wear jackets bearing the word “police”, which they aren’t, and in the process they give local communities the false impression that their local police force is responsible for raids and round up, thereby creating an adversarial relationship from whose consequences they walk away leaving the local police departments to handle the damage they caused, and while claiming they only arrest serious criminals, they go after people who have committed minor infractions or just look brown enough so they can amass large numbers and appear effective.
If they left off the word “police” and only rounded up those who they are supposed to and who they claim they are, I would not be so anti-ICE, and my attitude should be dealt with as it is, not lazily called anti-American.
In his attempt to be the friend of the Border Patrol, instead of referring to them as the CBP (Customs and Border Patrol), he referred to them as the CBC (the Congressional Black Caucus), and when he called up a border patrol officer to recount a good deed he had done, apparently because he had an Hispanic surname, Trump found it necessary to mention he spoke fluent English.

I am one of those people who believe that local police should not be doing the job of the feds and take away from community policing, and, although in cases where there is no way to avoid it when someone has been apprehended for committing a crime and the local police follow procedure and hand someone over to ICE, they should not be actively going around scooping up individuals because of where they live and what they look like, or raid gatherings hoping they can find an undocumented person in the crowd, nor should they be forced to.
And as far as his claim that Democrats want to eliminate ICE completely, no top Democrats in the House or Senate have called for that.
Like misrepresenting the NFL players kneeling at games so he can inflame his base and claim the false status of a great American hero, Trump is misrepresenting objections to his immigration policies along the border for wrongly separating families as a desire for open borders. He ignores the more than 500 children still separated from their families, and just as his misrepresentation of the reason for the NFL kneeling protest is to avoid having to address the real issue, he misrepresents the objections to his border policy to avoid addressing the humanitarian crisis that he has created.
