Yeah, I’m a bit confused

More than half the red states are the Southern (at one time Confederate) states, part of whose heritage is that they fought to preserve slavery.

Most slave holders owned only one or two slaves because slaves were expensive with healthy young males costing as much $1000, the same price as a 500 acre farm. Because of the expense, relatively very few households had more than 100 slaves with even fewer having more than 200.

According to the 1860 census, in the slave states of Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, out of 1,515,605 householdsĀ  only 393,967 held slaves, which was 26%. The population of the Southern states was about six million, meaning that the employable whites, not counting women and children, far outnumbered the jobs for which they could have been paid but that went to slaves who did not get paid.

The system was based on the original practice of bringing people from foreign countries to take jobs away from the domestic, employable population to create higher profits for the plantations, and then continuing the system of free labor over salaried labor by only employing the descendants of the original foreign, non-citizen population.

And to perpetuate this system that kept people away from salaried employment, an estimated quarter of a million employable people died in the war to preserve it.

So it is rather ironic that while carrying the Confederate battle flag claiming it is important to their heritage, and while agreeing with Trump and decrying the claim that people from foreign countries are coming here to take their jobs, the flag symbolizes the time that their ancestors fought and died to perpetuate that exact practice.

Part of their heritage is the system that had people working for free to produce high profits while denying employment to those who fought and died to keep that going.

The South was built on foreign workers taking their jobs, and the descendants of those who were not employed, yet fought to remain so, celebrate that.
