apparently it is never the right time

After the shooting at the Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the idea of dealing with our gun laws came up. After all, when it came to all the previous shootings, they had not been the time to have that discussion.

When he was asked if that time was now, Trump expressed his idea that what needed to be discussed was the death penalty.

“This has little to do with it if you take a look. I think one thing we should do is stiffen up our laws in terms of the death penalty. And I think they should very much bring the death penalty into vogue.”

So rather than do what could be done to limit deaths, Trump seems to not only be okay with the potential loss of the lives of the victims, but wants to add additional deaths, that of the shooters.

AND, it would be fashionable. It would be in vogue.

Of course, to help increase the carnage, and as a way to blame the victims,  he went on to repeat his call to increase those who are armed by stating,

“If they had protection inside, the results would have been far better. If they had some kind of protection inside the temple, maybe it could have been a much different situation. But they didn’t.”

Not really in sync with his sentiment in his inaugural address that,

“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”

Previously in response to the shooting in Las Vegas, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders may have repeated President Donald Trump’s condolences to the victims and families of those who were killed and injured, but then immediately pivoted to the mantra “this is not the time”.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy. Today is a day for consoling the survivors mourning those we lost. There’s a time and place for a political debate, but now is the time to unite as a country.”

Apparently protecting us from mass shootings is a political thing not a personal safety thing?

“There is an ongoing law enforcement investigation. It would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don’t know all of the facts.”

She went on to say,

“We don’t want to try to create laws that won’t stop these kinds of things from happening. Before we need to start talking about the preventions, we need to know more facts. The only person with blood on their hands is the shooter and this isn’t a time for us to go after.”

After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida, when asked if he thought it was the appropriate time to begin the discussion about gun control reform, Marco Rubio intoned the mantra.

“It’s not, only because people don’t know how this happened… who this person is, what motivated them, how did they get a hold of the weapon that they used for this attack.

I think it’s important to know all of that before you jump to conclusions that there’s some law we could have passed that could have prevented it. There may be, but shouldn’t we at least know the facts? I think that we can always have that debate but if you’re going to have the debate about this particular incident, you should know the facts of that incident before you run out and prescribe some law you claim could have prevented it.”

Paul Ryan echoed this saying,

“This is not a time to jump to some conclusion not knowing the full facts. We’ve got a lot more information we need to know.”

“This is one of those moments where we just need to step back and count our blessings. We need to think less about taking sides, and fighting each other politically, and just pulling together.”

So when is the right time, since we have yet to have the discussion even during the quiet time between mass shootings

I did a quick search for a list of mass shootings since Columbine and found this in the Villanovan, the student newspaper of Villanova University.

That certainly made it easy for me.

And to that we now add the synagogue in Pittsburgh, bringing the total to 544 people of whom 128 were children and college students.

Since 2006 the number and frequency of shootings has increased.

The 1994 ban on assault weapons, signed by President Clinton, which outlawed 19 types of military-style assault weapons, expired in 2004. It would not have if, according to a clause in the ban, Congress had reauthorized it, which it did not.

When children died at Sandy Hook and it was decided that that was not the time to even discuss reasonable gun laws, America lost its soul.

So when is the right time?
