A What?

You can tell that those objecting to liberal ideas are either old people, people addressing old people, or younger people influenced by older people or invested in old people ideas.

I was born smack-dab on the middle of the 20th Century—1950. You can’t get any more snack-dab in the middle than that.

Throughout my childhood the fear of creeping Communism was rampant. “Communists” were everywhere, even in your own family.

Anyone working for a company that got a government contract was the subject of an FBI background check that included interviews of neighbors, and if the neighbors appeared to be nervous about the FBI showing up at their door, they became the subject of a review. Just about anything anyone did seemed suspicious to someone, and “in God We Trust” became the country’s motto, and “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance to offset “Godless Communism” in the mid-fifties.

The fear of countries falling to Communism like dominoes led to messing around in Central America, with great results for U.S. corporations, and the war in Vietnam, that led to nothing.

During the presidency of Saint Ronald Reagan the Berlin wall came down, and because of him, Margaret Thatcher, Pope Jean Paul II, and Mikhail Gorbachev, the Evil Empire fell on December 26, 1991.

Apparently those who adored the quartet have forgotten why they adored them.

Arbitrarily choosing 1985 as a start date, mainly because its a nice number, anyone born that year would have been 6 years old by the time Communist Russia died. They would now be almost 35 and would only know about the threat of a Godless Communist Socialism from history class and old people conversations they could not avoid.

The Socialism they have known in their lifetime is the kind in places like Norway, and promotes education, healthcare for all, and a living wage.

It is not Communist Socialism but Democratic Socialism that still accepts capitalism, but capitalism that eschews excess, and, instead, has our elected government use tax money, not to subsidize corporations who do not share the wealth produced by the workers, but for those things that are beneficial to all the people, and that the economy and society should be run so as to address the human needs of all the citizens, the “We the people” of the Constitution.

So when the objection to things like the Green New Deal is based on the evils of Communism, that comparison is lost on those who have never dealt with it, and only appeals to the fears of the older voters who those under 40 now outnumber.

It is the political equivalent of telling a 6 year old to “hang up the phone”.
