Tuesday’s GOP defense of Trump

After two days of silence, the GOP has finally responded to Trump’s racist tweets at a press conference, and, in a show solidarity, they stood strong.

The first to speak was Liz Cheney who took on Trump’s tweets vis-a- vis

“So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how .it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

facing them head on saying,

“I want to make absolutely clear that our opposition to our socialist colleagues has absolutely nothing to do with their gender, with their religion, or with their race. It has to do with the content of their policies. They’re wrong when they attempt to impose the fraud of socialism on the American people.”

So she threw out the generic word “Socialism” to avoid the elephant in the room.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was just as strong when he stated at the Tuesday presser,

“Let’s not be false about what is happening here today (referring to the resolution proposed in the House to condemn Trump’s racist tweets). This is all about politics and beliefs of ideologies.”

after having said on Monday,

“I do not believe the speaker of the House was racist either when those individuals on her side of the aisle … claimed she was racist either. I do not believe that. I believe this is about ideology.”

“I think this party has been very clear, we are the party of Lincoln. This party believes in the content of the individual. I’ve watched from our own actions.”

And, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise supported McCarthy’s assessment of the resolution by saying that the resolution was just “one more attempt to personally attack President Trump instead of focusing on things that can actually get this economy going.”

Just as Trump’s tweets did not do, apparently.

Trump meanwhile defended his original tweets before the impending vote on the resolution by further tweeting,

“I don’t have a Racist bone in my body! The so-called vote to be taken is a Democrat con game. Republicans should not show ‘weakness’ and fall into their trap.”

On Monday his defense had claimed,

“…..Congresswomen, who I truly believe, based on their actions, hate our Country. Get a list of  “ HORRIBLE” things they have said. Omar is polling at 8%, Cortez at 21%. Nancy Pelosi tried to push them away, but now they are forever wedded to the Democrat Party. See you in 2020!

In a further attempt to distract from the tweets, Scalise accused Representative Ilhan Omar of making inflammatory false statements about the conditions in detention facilities on the border where migrants who enter the country illegally are held, and slammed Pressley for refusing to refer to Trump as president, which has nothing to do with the racism of the tweets.

These deflections remind me of how, in order to not deal with racial inequality, Trump and his conservative acolytes claimed taking a knee at NFL games was anti-troop and anti-America so no one would deal with the actual issue.

And they are distracting again to avoid people realizing how racist Trump can be.

It may not be working this time.
