Racism. Love it or leave

When Colin Kaepernick first sat, but on advice of a veteran friend changed that to taking a knee, at the irrelevant playing of the National Anthem before NFL games, he did so because he was protesting police brutality and the lack of any honest response to it.

Agree with him or not, that was what people were originally to discuss until, in order to avoid dealing with the actual issue being presented by a Black man, Donald Trump, a White man, usurped this for political reasons and ignored the Black man’s motivation claiming it was an action based on hatred of America and the troops who defend it.

He simply dismissed the Black man and his and other Black people’s concern as if it did not matter.

Trump made such suggestions as,

“Maybe he should find a country that works better for him,”

Speaking specifically  of Kaepernick, and more general toward the other Black athletes who later joined him by saying,

“Maybe they shouldn’t be in the country.”

When most of the members of the Philadelphia Eagles made it known that they didn’t want to go to the White House because of Trump’s negative remarks about taking a knee while ignoring the real reason for doing so, he said,

“We love our country, we respect our flag, and we always proudly stand for the national anthem.”

Trump also asked at a rally,

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners,  when somebody disrespects our flag to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out. He’s fired. He’s fired!’ ”

When Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers’ top draft pick, tweeted that Kaeprnivk was a “clown”, Trump tweeted,

“Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft. You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Because one way to make America great again is to ignore racial inequity and accept it as part of the fabric of the country.

Bosa, apologized for this tweet, not because he saw any merit in Kaepernick’s protest, but because,

“I had to. There is a chance I might end up in San Francisco.”

Another White man who saw expedience in an apology to protect his career when ignoring what the reason Kaepernick was a “clown” was based on.

The message is clear.

If you don’t like police brutality or racial inequity, this is not your country.

The actual issue has yet to be addressed.

In contrast, when outspoken women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe stayed in the locker room during the playing of the anthem a year or two back, Trump said nothing. Rapinoe is White. He even invited her and the rest of the team to the White House that year.

This year, however, when she said she would not go to the White House if the team won the World Cup, Trump, again, equated criticism of him with hatred of the country, when he said after being asked about a Women’s Soccer Team invite,

“We haven’t yet … invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”

But he did not tell her to leave the country, at least.

Again, she is White.

And just as a side note, in 2017, when the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins went to the White House, Trump praised them for being “incredible patriots”. The all white team included six Canadians, two Swedes, a Russian, and a Finn, none of whom are U.S. citizens.

But they were White so they had to be incredible patriots in his mind.

But when it came to four American citizens, three native born and one naturalized, he had no problem suggesting,

“So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly ..and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how”

because they do not agree with his racism, xenophobia, Homophobia, and misogyny.

The proof that you love America is that first you must love him.

His reaction to the White Supremacists marching in Charlottesville with tiki torches and confederate flags was to claim they were fine people.

When the Confederate States of America fired on Fort Sumter, that was clearly an attack on the United States of America.  Its flags and statues erected and resurrected when Jim Crow laws began cropping up, are reminders of that.

But when people clamored to have them removed from public spaces, Trump described removing Confederate statues  and flags as “changing history … changing culture”, and he defended marchers in a white supremacist rally because he saw them as “ defending their ‘heritage.”

Many who defend this heritage are members of Congress.

How can the demand to keep symbols of a foreign country that fought a war against the United States of America be seen as a statement that “We love our country, we respect our flag, and we always proudly stand for the national anthem.”

And considering the poverty, lack of education, and the number of Southern states that rely on government assistance, why does Trump not suggest that those who want to celebrate their attack on the United States,

“go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how….”

So to Trump, White people can express their opinions and they do so as Americans. But, if people of color do it, they need to leave.

And even as people defend his remarks as not being racist, the U,S, Equal Equality Employment Opportunity Commission, has ruled

“Ethnic slurs and other verbal or physical conduct because of nationality are illegal if they are severe or pervasive and create an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment, interfere with work performance, or negatively affect job opportunities. Examples of potentially unlawful conduct include insults, taunting, or ethnic epithets, such as making fun of a person’s foreign accent or comments like, ‘Go back to where you came from,’ whether made by supervisors or co-workers.”

The EEOC cites “go back to where you came from” as a classic form of discrimination that violates civil rights.

Telling the NFL to fire Black players for expressing an opinion under the rights mentioned in the First Amendment and suggesting they go elsewhere is wrong. As is telling duly elected representatives of the people who elected them to do that.
