Hello! The children?

The people of Yemen have been bombed for over four years by a Saudi Arabia-led coalition. This has not been precision bombing, but reckless, with no concern about where the bombs are dropped.

Of the many killed in these bombings 443 have been children, forty-four of whom were on a bus hit by a stray missile in August 2018. The bomb that had taken out the school bus killing those 44 children was a 227kg laser-guided bomb made by Lockheed Martin and sold to Saudi Arabia by the United States as part of a billion dollar weapons deal.

No mention was made of this when, one week later, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman whose planes were responsible.

One week ago this month eighteen drones and seven missiles knocked out half of Saudi Arabia’s oil production with a loss of about 50% of Saudi’s output, causing a huge disruption in the world’s oil supply.

This time Mike Pompeo showed some concern declaring the drone-strikes an “unprecedented attack on the world’s energy supply” and an “act of war.”

Unlike Saudi Arabia’s constant and random bombing raids on innocent people in Yemen and the loss of thousands of innocent lives, regarding the drone attack, with not one life lost and no one even slightly injured, Pompeo announced,

Within days of the attack , the Saudi energy minister said that half the oil production which had been knocked out had been recovered, and that production capacity at the plants would be fully restored by the end of the month.

While this was certainly was “threatening behavior” whose damage may take a month to undo, it is not as bad as a four-year war which has caused a horrible humanitarian crisis.

Trump, while bragging about a multi-billion dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia addressed the oil supply attack by starting, “If we have to do something, we’ll do it without hesitation,” and mentioning that “the ultimate option” was still on the table.

On Friday, President Trump authorized additional U.S. forces be deployed to the Middle East to strengthen air and missile defenses around Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

So, while children have been killed by Saudi bombing raids, no one has really cared, the United States has stayed silent, but all hell breaks loose when oil is touched.
