no, it’s not

Listen carefully to the rhetoric concerning the re-opening of schools. What will be repeated most is that this is all about what is best for children. God knows their grandparents let the country down by not improving the economy by dying of the virus, but they are adults and sometimes actually act it by taking control of their lives. Children, however, have few choices in their young lives to exercise that control. They are to be seen and not heard, and they are to do as they are told. So, it’s back to school for them.

Programs like breakfast and lunch at school are for many kids where they get their major and best meals of the day, but, for what are not noble reasons, there are those who want to remove this source of food in the name of some nebulous, possible  future circumstance  making that better for the children than relieving their food problem.

The incantation, “think of the children” is the coverall statement to avoid real discussion by cutting it off by attempting to paint the people with different ideas as haters of innocent children while they themselves use them as pawns.

When the dust clears, whatever is decided on actually has nothing to really do with children.

School districts often refuse to negotiate in good faith with teachers on decent hours, wages, and conditions of employment claiming it is, somehow, because we have to think of the children. Sure, teachers want hours, wage, and conditions of employment commensurate with their training and professional standing, and so they can take care of their families, but when told to stretch two year old wages to present costs, and work longer hours with no compensation, it is because creating those conditions means the powers that be are thinking of the children while the teachers selfishly aren’t.

They require all kinds of standardized tests, as they cut or add programs and curriculum without talking to the teachers who will have to implement them because of the children.

They often establish policies and practices that do not treat all children equally because of the children.

It is like those people driving erratically and carelessly in traffic without any concern for the traffic or road conditions because that “Baby on Board” thing in the rear window means everyone else has the responsibility to drive carefully because they should act in the knowledge there is a baby in that car.

It’s not about a baby. It is about seeking a privilege for the driver to drive as they want.

In the womb their “personhood” is a reason to let the child be born, but once born, whatever the circumstances, that care for the child ends and they’re on their own, except for being used when politically expedient.

The education and real needs of kids are often the victims of political agendas. Supporting something for them or objecting to something that may harm them, is of little consequence when really thinking of the children goes against one’s politics.

The American Principles Project (APP), a conservative non-profit organization, intends to use political ads claiming that Joe Biden endorses “gender change treatments for minors”. This is based on his support measures to help fight against GLBT youth homelessness, school bullying, sexual assault, and suicide – things that involve thinking of the children.

Gays have become less threatening over time, and using them as a threat to society as we know it doesn’t have the clout it used to. Once all the stereotypes and heterosexual assumptions of Gay people were examined and exposed as false, using Gays as a threat would be like continuing to insist that Obama is coming for the guns.

Some other peril had to be found, and the conservatives have settled on students who happen to be Transgender.

Conservative activist Terry Schilling of APP said that when his group ran similar ads in Kentucky it got thousands of conservative Democrats to vote for the Republican gubernatorial candidate.

Explaining the strategy he said,

“What I’m hoping is that once we release these ads and numbers start to move, the Trump campaign will see it’s a powerful issue that the Republican Party can use to its success.”

Transgender youth could be the distraction that takes focus away from the present COVID 19 mismanagement mess.

And considering the general GOP animosity toward Transgender people and Trump’s actions specifically, Transgender students now enter God, Guns, and Gays as the new GOP obsession.

Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas have either proposed or enacted bills intended to stop gender-affirming health care for minors (i.e. Children, students).

Ignoring the realities of puberty, like when it begins, Florida and South Dakota have made it a felony to provide puberty blockers to minors. You can only start such a regimen after the fact while a kid is in puberty.

In Utah, Republican Brad Daw planned to introduce a bill to prevent transgender minors from “changing their lives permanently.”

Like when, after the insistence of guys like this, you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and will live permanently from now on according to that choice regardless of how you were before, and, failing that will have you burning in hell eternally as an apostate.

No more baby baptisms.

As far as permanent change, puberty blockers buy kids time so that their bodies don’t undergo permanent changes that can make it harder for them to transition later.

Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, New Hampshire, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Washington, require that transgender students compete in sports according to the gender indicated on their birth certificates or with their sex assigned at birth.

In a desperate attempt to make their school experience less of a positive one, in an exercise of a politician putting his personally held religious beliefs above all others as if only his beliefs are valid, Georgia’s Philip Singleton introduced a bill that would ban “biological males” from participating in individual girls’ sports and “biological females” from participating in individual boys’ sports without defining either term.

Saying, “The intent of my bill is to make sure every student has the opportunity to compete fairly”, he failed to define “every student” which implies he means those who look and believe just as he does, not those others.

Forcing trans students to misgender themselves in order to participate effectively bans them from competing.

This whole transgender experience is not some light, surface, visual re-alignment, but a recognition and acceptance of one’s true self which goes down deep to one’s very soul. Misgendering by self is suicide of one’s own true personhood. Misgendering by others is murder.

So requiring compliance with the rule in order to play a sport is demanding more than what the closed minded think it is all about, and is a subtle way to have Trans Students self-ban.

Bills have been introduced that would ban transgender people from using the appropriate facilities in schools, and would ban school officials and teachers from using the correct pronouns for transgender students

Proposed and passed, or proposed and defeated, either way, bills like this and Trump’s actions are harmful and send a message that Trans students are an appropriate target of discrimination.

But, hey, Republicans, like Conservative activist Terry Schilling of APP, believe these kids are great props with futures and lives not worth consideration so long as votes are gotten and they can be lumped in with other students for the count, while their needs and realities can be dismissed.

But these are school children.

After Sandy Hook elementary we sent them back to school doing little about school shootings, and now, to see is it is safe to totally reopen society, we are sending the kids back, the canaries in the coal mine, and will make that decision when we see what happens.

“Think of the children” actually means “Think how we can use the children”.
