We all have them

Every group, I don’t care what unites them- gender, race,  Religion, location, culture, you name it- has those member of it that work against the common good. It is one thing if this is based on ignorance or facts or a lack of paying attention to what is going one, but worse, if not the worst, are those who act against the common good because they stand to gain personally, even if the stature gained has only value within a particular group whose approval is sought.

And while they praise and support those whose basking glow they seek, they not only turn their backs on their own, but distract the idol from seeing that they do not represent anyone other than their own self interest and keep the needs of those they keep from being seen in the shadows where they can be ignored.

The Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), the Kapos of the Gay world has released a video this week supporting Trump claiming that Trump has actually been the best president ever for Gay people.

I tend to favor using the word “Gay” as an all inclusive tenting term when I write my blogs because I was around when that is what we all were when we roared out, but I also know even as I type it, it is my shorthand for the longer, more spelled out list of letters that, again for historical reasons, I write as GLBT while others may change the order while adding letters, so the broader inclusivity of that three letter word is on my mind. As a teacher and Gay activist, terme contemporain, I once used the term “sexual minority” until administrators in an extremely conservative location became comfortable enough including Gay and Lesbian in official discussions on district student policies.

Whatever term is used to describe us, a three letter word, an ever expanding alphabet, a once hurtful term now being “reclaimed” by those it never hurt, they are inclusive of all the non-heterosexual people whose voice is growing in unity, so anyone who claims to represent us and speaks for us , and anyone who supports someone claiming to be the friend of all of us, must do so for all of us. Leave one out and the constituency changes. The credentials and credibility of the representative go up in smoke.

Trump has opposed Gay rights in court, expanded religious exemptions to allow nonprofits and businesses to discriminate against Gay people, banned Transgender people from the military, rolled back protections for Gay people in several executive departments, and has given anti-Gay hate groups and individuals more access to and decision influencing power in the White House.

While claiming on its website,

“Log Cabin Republicans is the nation’s largest Republican organization dedicated to representing LGBT conservatives and all,”

they seem to have abandoned the T if they have no problem with the best president ever for Gay people going after them as Trump has done.

Regarding Gay marriage, in 2011, before the ruling that Trump opposes, and when considering a 2012 presidential bid Trump had said,

“I just don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel right about it. I’m against it and I take a lot of heat because I come from New York. You know, for New York it’s like, how can you be against Gay marriage? But I’m opposed to gay marriage.”

In that same interview when asked about Gay people claiming that denying Gay marriage violates their rights since they are American citizens and should have a right to live the same way heterosexuals live, Trump brushed that aside saying,

Benefits of using comfort insoles include reducing soreness and fatigue levitra online from india from the mind and body of a patient in a VIP doctor’s office? Or does he rather make me feel like a compassionate pal I can talk to about just anything that’s on your mind? And choose the one you will give a “yes” answer about in the second case. You will have a full control on the ejaculation and you will be buying viagra in italy able to eliminate premature ejaculation. Well, I think it’s a tough situation, and I’ll tell you what I say. I say that we have other problems. We have other problems in this country. And I don’t think a president should be elected on gay marriage or not gay marriage because we have some very big problems… I am opposed.”

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 26, 2015 that all states and territories to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize the validly of those performed in other jurisdictions, and on the campaign trail, Trump made his disapproval known and when asked on the campaign trail about it he announced  he would “strongly consider” appointing justices to the Supreme Court who would be committed to overturning the decision that legalized Gay marriage, saying,

“If I’m elected, I would be very strong on putting certain judges on the bench that I think maybe could change things. I don’t like the way they ruled. I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint they should have given the state – it should be a states’ rights issue,”

and then dispelling any doubt when being asked if that meant he would appoint justices to overrule the decision on same-sex marriage, Trump said,

“I would strongly consider that, yes.”

He also said on the campaign trail,

“I’m traditional marriage. It is changing rapidly. I’m just for traditional marriage.”

So by the time Trump was elected and sworn in the country had marriage equality, yet the LCR claims that Trump is the

“first president in American history to be pro-gay marriage from his first day in office.”

What choice did he have?

In a bout of tunnel vision, while ignoring the loss of rights, job security, and the same rights as all other citizens whose rights aren’t permissibly dismissed by an unverifiable claim of the free exercise of religion, we are offered as proof of our need to support our friend, his four year old pledge to end the criminalization of homosexuality around the world, which was apparently replaced with putting that energy into going after Gay rights at home and doing nothing overseas.

As an example of his lack of Joe Biden’s lack of support for the Gay Community, the LCR video brings up his opposition to marriage equality in the 1990s, hiding that , while Trump was openly opposing Gay marriage, on May 6, 2012, being asked on Meet the Press about Gay marriage Biden had said,

“Who do you love? Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love? And that’s what people are finding out is what all marriages, at their root, are about.”

Trump tweeted that it’s his “great honor!!” in response to being the subject of a miswleading and selectively edited history.

We Gays are smarter than this.
