more than one moment

Leading up to Inauguration Day, the historical nature of the soon to be installed Biden administration was covered in broad strokes by the media. On the day itself, the coverage became more pinpointed and as I channel surfed seeing how the different outlets were presenting the same thing before settling on the one on which I would watch the whole Biden/Harris Inauguration, the topic covered by all of the cable news networks was the most obvious example of Kamala Harris’s being the first bi-racial woman of color to be Vice-President and the next in line if anything were to happen to Biden.

On the station upon which I had settled, while the video was of the lead up activity to the swearing in taking place at the Capitol, the audio was the voices of the anchors/panelists prognosticating and introducing the dignitaries as they walked out the door.

A political version of the Red Carpet but with the small talk being politics and the celebrities being politicians.

As the talk turned to the importance of the moment with each pointing out what Vice-President Kamala Harris meant to women, all little girls, especially those like Kamala, all minorities, males and females, young and old, and how those never in the position of those who really need to see it may not grasp the full power of this moment, out of the door walked Peter Buttigieg and Chasten, his spouse.

One of the voices pointed out who they were, and then immediately returned to the talk about what makes Kamala’s swearing in such an important thing for those who may have been overlooked and have known it.

Like that.

The thing she was talking about was happening in another form, and she had acknowledge it by informing viewers of who those two guys were, yet, even though she saw it to mention it, she did not see its monumental importance to that Gay kid out there who, but for having seen this moment, could have lived a sad life.

Two married Gay men were attending the inauguration, sitting in the good seats because one of them is headed for the cabinet, and they did so openly and normally.

There may have been Gay and Lesbian people up there before as individuals or couples living in a Boston Marriage who, giving in to the safety of the closet, passed, or if open, still as a couple in a relationship looked down upon.

Any Gay kid watching the coverage saw the exact same thing that women, all little girls and boys, especially those like Kamala, all minorities, males and females, young and old, saw when they saw her, and was validated by two married Gay men being two married Gay men as equal to any other couple in those seats.

And at the National Capitol on live TV.

The other group who also had their monumental moment are the Native Americans who also saw their moment knowing most others would not when Debra Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo People and the nominee for the Cabinet position of Secretary of the Interior, also walked through that door and took her seat.

As quiet as the moment was, it was monumental.
