As the story goes, a jewelry store was broken into in a seaside town in Maryland, but more things ended up being missing after the two police officers left than before they had arrived. One of the police officers left the force soon after, moved to another state, and became a county sheriff.

This story follows him and keeps getting passed around like the ones about fish, and turkeys filled with money sent to a foreign country where he has a retirement home.

Curious, and to know the actual facts about events, I did some reading, but found that while the facts may seem somewhat straight forward, there are details that keep the story alive.

There had been a robbery at a jewelry store in a seaside town in 1982 at which Officer Thomas Hodgson, who has mentioned involvement in a special unit as the basis for his expertise being a bad-ass sheriff, was one of the responding detectives.

Not long after that, Hodgson, the 1981 Police Officer of the year, left the force claiming in later years it was because his initial idealism about law enforcement began to fade after seeing others on the force withdraw from society and become bitter. He chose to avoid that, so, after only five years on the force, he took off his badge and went to work for his brother’s landscaping company, moving eventually to New Bedford MA where he worked at another brother’s business having arrived complete with political ties that got him on the City Council within three years of having arrived as a stranger in a new place with only his brother as a connection.

He was and remains a Republican who comfortably morphed from the traditional one that existed when he was appointed by Governor Weld to be the replacement Bristol County Sheriff in 1997 after a 15 year’s hiatus from law enforcement after a minimum tenure on the force, to the rabid Trumper he became over his time as sheriff.

The jewelers filed a lawsuit suit against the two officers, as well as the police department as a whole and the seaside city, claiming that while the two detectives were at the scene, a tray of men’s rings valued up to $50,000, was found near a hole in the wall the thieves had presumably used to access the store, and while the two officers later claimed the rings were left at the store with personnel, the jewelers claimed the officers said they needed that tray of rings for evidence and removed it.

The jewelers’ attorney argued that either the officers had taken the rings make money off them or the police lost some rather expensive evidence with either scenario calling for compensation.

When the allegations were investigated by the county prosecutor and the police department’s internal affairs bureau which found no evidence of wrongdoing, the Chief of Police brought suspicion of the validity of the investigation by stating in a post investigation statement,

“We looked at it as a joke, as a nuisance case,”

and likened accusing the two detectives to accusing Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary of committing the crime.

If that was the attitude going into the investigation, how valid can the results be?

The break-in took place in January 1982, followed by Hodgson’s career change, and then the lawsuit came in the September 1983 which gave the now sheriff an opportunity for twisted logic by pointing out that the lawsuit could not have had anything to do with his actions as it came after he left the force.

One might see a reflection of the recent excuse that a president does not have to answer for something he did in office once he was out of it.

But the sequence of events does appear a little sketchy.

His resignation and move from the town to a whole different state took place within a short time period after the disappearance of the jewels, and people were expected to accept the idea that the perpetrator would not leave the area as quickly, yet as unsuspiciously, as possible, that his wife had grown to dislike the seasonal nature of the town, and that, for someone so dedicated to law enforcement, he simply gave up a career to work on landscaping before moving to another state to work in a business supply store after which he worked for another brother in his accounting firm.

We all know most thieves hang around waiting to be caught rather than leave town by sundown. Right?

His supposed charmed career in which no allegations would stick beginning with the jewelers having lost their case may have been breached when, after the disturbance on his Dartmouth MA campus at the beginni9ng of May, 2020, and his welcoming an investigation with a bring-it-on press conference that went on to point out his violations of laws, policies, and his own protocols which called for recommendations to clean up faults, something he totally rejected as it did not go his way.

After the police department and county attorney finished investigating Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary the court made its ruling and that is the official story.

But the elements and the sheriff’s explanations do keep one thinking.

Out of state relatives, some in political positions, certainly played a role in getting an accountant the job of a County Sheriff.

So, the choice is to accept the story that the jewelers were just going after him for money. or the sheriff to avoid the heat moved from Maryland to Massachusetts to work in a business supply store like Staples, while politically connected relatives and friends of the family got him into positions of authority most likely to promote their agenda, and eventually, with limited law enforcement experience and after a decade long hiatus from the little he had, get a powerful county position that can benefit those who got it for him.
