But they got fooled by their own name, and, in attempting to make a connection with the Founding Fathers and the original Tea Party, they romanticized things and went with a Washington-chopping-down-the-cherry-tree- brand of pseudo, feel good history and have gone astray and revealed their own limited knowledge and perception of history.

While betraying those who planned and carried out the Boston Tea Party, they deceived themselves and played into the hands of those who use that self-deception for their own advantage.

The tax on tea had already been brought down to its original rate by the time the Boston Tea Party happened.

The company added the negated tax increase to the price of the tea, so what the government would have gotten, the company got as profit and dividends to its investors.

I worked with a guy on Cape Cod, a true Tea Party person who loathed big government and President Obama, who on every national holiday affixed a large American flag to a pole at the back of his pick-up so it would wave patriotically as he drove around town.

The rest of the time he sported a decal of the American flag on the passenger side rear window of his cab, and a Stars and Bars decal behind the driver’s seat.

He explained that these were the symbols of “We the People”.

I guess it never dawned on him that the passenger side decal and the meaning he attached to it was a little insulting to the memory of those veterans of the Civil War buried in any of Cape Cod’s numerous cemeteries that he drove by while waving his flag and claiming to be the most American person on the road.
