Ruby Bridges had to face jeers, spit, curse words, threatened and attempted acts of violence, and derogatory words thrown at her by the angry White parents as at all of 6 years old in 1960 she entered her New Orleans elementary school, the first non-White child to ever do so in that part of the segregated South.

That is why I am sure there is little worry that she will be affected by the objections to her book, ‘Ruby Bridges Goes to School’,  by those who want to keep the book out of the hands of children because their parents and grandparents, who may have participated at the time or held strongly to the racist beliefs voiced by that crowd, and perhaps still do, are not represented in a positive way for participating in the jeering, spitting, hurling of curse words, and the throwing of  derogatory words at a 6 year old.

The actions they would prefer the book had cleaned up a bit, toned down, perhaps, or led to Ruby having found some way to build the bridge, by herself, doing all the work, so the people like those in the book don’t feel uncomfortable were what the parents and their children yelled and did that day in 1960.

Their believe is that if anything is to be done about it, the burden is on that now grown up 6 year old to retell the story for comfort, while they do nothing from their end to rectify that, subsequent, and on-going wrongs.

They should be made uncomfortable if they find themselves to be connected to what needs to be toned down.

Of course, as usually happens with book censorship to make it appear the objection is built on the moral high ground, the attempt, was made to claim the recounting of the events from the eyes of a 6 year old was not the type of thing that children should be exposed to. There are enough videos that morning to show there was no concern for what that child was subjected to.

Somehow, kids’ reading this book in elementary school is bad because the story will show them the darker side of some racist assumptions, traditions, and correctable beliefs that only 6 year-old Ruby Bridges should be allowed to be exposed to.
