greener grass

The younger people of Cuba with no direct knowledge of a revolution that took place decades before they were born, have taken to the streets to bring Cuba out of the past that means nothing to them and into the future where they will spend the rest of their lives.

Under Communist rule, things did not go so well. The cuteness of the old cars of Havana that made it onto post cards because if nothing else, these things were being kept alive and in good condition just didn’t cut it anymore, and the United States on going desire to keep one relic of the old Cold War alive for old times sake may have been a poof of patriotism at one point, but the constant attempt to keep people believing if they just held on they could go back to Cuba and get all their old stuff back was a failing policy.

Now in Cuba, just as in Central America, our dickering around with the politics of a “third world country” helped to create, by accident or by plan, the conditions that finally had these people exploding.

You know like how the Gays erupted at the Stonewall Inn that night and demanded and eventually got and continue to get our Creator endowed inalienable rights in spite of the main stream of society for its own ends, political or financial, or simply the both combined in religion, doing everything to prevent tht by denial of rights, removal of rights, or promulgating laws to prevent and curtail rights.

Or, like Black Lives Matter, tired of getting killed and in light of discoveries of such long hidden things like The Greenwood Massacre of Tulsa, Oklahoma, that should African American poverty was a creation forced on them by people who would use the results of that against them, rose u-p and fought for their humanity and rights afforded them because of it.

We watched as Native Americans, attempting to preserve their land from a hostile takeover because business counted more than people, especially Native American ones, and protesting the attacks on what they hold sacred in ways we whites do not understand, were attacked by guns, dogs, vehicles and angry Bundys who think they are the stewards of the land of others.

These people are clearly Anti-American as they do not accept what those on high deign to allow.

They should accept poor wages, paying taxes while the rich, the friends of the politicians, don’t, hoping to be able to get health care, and having to choose between bills, food, or healthcare because it is American to struggle to get the better life you can have, but can’t because those who have already made keep you from making it too.

So. The Cubans are doing what Americans have recently done and for which they faced tear gas, rubber bullets, childish presidential blurtings with no meaning or syntax, and the condemnation of the Grand Old Party who saw them as not keeping in their assigned place.

Florida Representative Mario Díaz-Balart has introduced a resolution to support the Cuban people with Steve Scalise (R-LA), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Greg Steube (R-FL), Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Byron Donalds (R-FL), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Liz Cheney (R-WY) initially signing on as cosponsors for the House resolution.

The resolution, “Expressing solidarity with the Cuban people in their demands for freedom and respect for basic human rights” calls for (and here a caution against the logical substituting of groups in the United States who are being treated like the GOP wish the Cubans weren’t treated by their government)

  • the release of all political prisoners and for the end of acts of repression, arbitrary imprisonments, torture, and other human rights abuses
  • the recognizing of the brave pro-democracy and human rights activists, including independent journalists, artists, labor leaders, and religious leaders who have been persecuted through the years.
  • Democracies and regional and multilateral organizations to affirm that violence against the unarmed people of Cuba will not be tolerated and human rights abusers will be held accountable for their crimes.
  • Calling on the international community to condemn repression and expressing unequivocal support for their rights to self-governance, human rights, and basic liberties.

So, perhaps once we get things all straightened out and Cuba’s people have human rights, living wages, better healthcare, and equality, we can import that methodology here and get the same thing done.
