Will it happen?

Surveys have shown that church attendance is slipping, and this is also evidenced by the number of churches that either sit empty, alternate services with churches of the same denomination that are close by, or are sold on the real estate market either to other church groups, or to those who convert them to some non-church uses.

But there may be hope.

Lux Dei Design, “a church branding agency,” has come up with an idea.

And it has nothing to do with making the Gospels more attractive and the churches less negative or judgmental toward others.

According to the MacMass web site, “We realized that a design approach — an entrepreneurial approach — had the potential to revolutionize how churches engage with the world. We want to see churches return to the center of everyday life, and the way to engage with our modern culture is through innovation.
By combining a church and a McDonald’s we can create a self-sustaining, community-engaged, popular church, and an unparalleled McDonald’s restaurant.”

Whatever funds are collected through the donation site IndieGoGo would go “primarily towards purchasing a franchise, with twenty percent devoted to construction, and establishing the necessary infrastructure within and around the church.”

Lux Dei Design says, “a McDonald’s Church will support itself and become increasingly active in its community.”

Lux Dei would need $1 million to get the first project off the ground, and it will be interesting to see if this actually happens, and if there are enough people who actually donate to this project.

Some churches already have little coffee shops connected to them that seem a little more classy than a Micky-D’s, so a MacDonald’s franchise may not be as wild an idea as it might appear at first blush.

What will be interesting will be to see if this goes beyond what may be a tongue in cheek idea.

And if it becomes real, will the franchise be tax exempt because it is part of a church, and not just next to one?

In some churches it might even brighten up the crucifixes.
