And the difference is?

Remember back when Ronald Reagan worked closely, both covertly and overtly, with Pope John Paul II to bring down Communist Russia, end the Cold War, and normalize relations with whatever the Soviet Union would become at that point.

What a great thing it was, and how great was John Paul II for playing his part in the process.

We just loved the guy for it. He was one of the Three Musketeers along with Reagan and Thatcher.

Now we have Pope Francis getting Raul Castro and President Obama writing and calling each other, even attending secret meetings, separately of course, where Francis acted as the go-between to get the U.S.A. to normalize relations between us and Cuba.

Obviously, just as with Reagan and John Paul II, this is a great thing.

Right?

Naw.

One president was Reagan, a god, a saint.
The other well……

So far all that has been agreed to is to reopen embassies, loosen travel restrictions, and end certain embargoes.

But this and the “interference” of the meddling pope, oh not the other one, this one, has Marco Rubio all in a tizzy, and has him criticizing the pope for playing a role and acting out of character.

But if the JPII/Reagan thing was acceptable, how is this “out of character”?

First there was all that Gdansk shipyard business in Poland that got the ball rolling, followed by the Soviet Union totally breaking up.

With Rubio, it’s as if a Pope, helping the U.S.A. deal with communist countries had never happened before.

Now it will be up to a GOP Congress to either allow things to move, or obstruct any progress.

Unlike when Reagan did it, this action with Cuba is being called “another concession to tyranny.”

Rubio claims, “These changes will lead to legitimacy for a government that shamelessly continuously abuses human rights but it will not lead to assistance for those whose rights are being abused. It’s absurd and it’s part of a long record of coddling dictators and tyrants”.

Obama must have learned this coddling from Reagan.

Abbott and Costello, Sens. Lindsey Graham and John McCain, released a joint statement saying that this normalizing of relations with Cuba would cause damage to American values.

“Unfortunately, we fear the most damaging chapter to America’s national security is still being written. We dread the day President Obama takes to the podium to announce a nuclear deal with the Iranian ayatollahs which does little, if anything, to deter their nuclear ambitions, placing our nation and our closest allies in even deeper peril”.

Gee, no leap in logic there.

There were complaints that we only got one prisoner back in exchange for three of theirs, but this ignores the 53 political pioneers Cuba has agreed to release.

So the real score is that we get 54 people released; Cuba gets 3.

But, hey, Obama did it, so it just has to be bad.

One pope good, one pope bad.
