House crushes the little guys

The latest Republican-led effort to kill the Obama administration’s Executive Order on Immigration and the DACA program passed in the House  236-191.

Basically, because of Wednesday’s vote, undocumented immigrants have to live with the fear that they might be deported, not with the reality that they will be.

Fear is a powerful tool.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which has already protected over 600,000 young people since 2012, and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans program, the November Executive Order, would be rendered impotent.

The Department of Homeland Security won’t be able to use any funds (and most come from fees, not any budget) to process any applications submitted because of the Executive Order.

Young people could fill out applications, but they just wouldn’t be processed.

Adults would have no reason to even do that.

There will be no stays of deportations and no work permits.

The result will be that unauthorized immigranst will live with the possibility of getting deported without that even being definite. They would live with the fear that something may or may not happen since ICE agents would not be directed who to go after, and would just have to come up with their own priority lists.

Whereas ICE can deport at least 400,000 unauthorized immigrants a year, neither they nor the undocumented will know who’s being targeted or why.

No chance of corruption there.

And without Green Cards and the chance to get jobs, there will be a whole class of people in the shadows who have no way to support themselves, with little incentive to return to their home countries because of the life threatening conditions there, or they have lived their whole lives in this, and no other country.

After this vote, there is nothing left but fear and shadows if the Republican Senate does not do the right thing, and barring that the president does not use his veto pen.
