It’s abuse

therapy

It’s not therapy.

It’s child abuse.

First she attempted to remove any “Homosexually Themed” books from public libraries making no distinction between what some might, according to their own biases, consider too “adult” to be in a library, especially the children’s section, and books that would supply self-affirming information to those who might want it, be they young people, or their parents and siblings.

If it spoke positively about Gay people, the books were the work of Satan.

She neither defined what she meant by the term “Homosexually themed”, nor did she explain how any decision about which books would fall into that category would be made, nor who would make that determination.

She lost at the local level. Her crusade for Jesus failed.

So she took the next step proposing legislation to threaten any library system in the state with loss of state funding that did not do as she wanted

And, again she lost.

She continually tried desperately to present GLBT people as the enemy, going so far as to claim they were a worse threat to America than terrorists, and advising that, like any cancer, GLBT people should be removed.

Again she did not define what she meant by that.

She has followers, but any research into who they are makes it plain that they are not all that level headed as they lean more toward the fanatical.

Throughout her legislative career, while her state needs to get out of poverty while leading the country in teen pregnancy, women in prison, syphilis, parents who kill their own children, women who protect their boyfriends after they have killed the baby, and meth,  and with over half the marriages ending in divorce, with the state being in the basement when it comes to education, Sally Kern is using her position for a religious crusade that addresses none of the needs of the state.

And, each time she fails, she looks for another cause as if she fears she has failed the Lord and has to redeem herself at the state’s and its citizens’ expense.

She overlooks the idea that what she claims is the will of God revealed to her by God Himself, might just be her own ideas, and she has only convinced herself they come from a higher authority.

Then the court decides that same sex couples should be allowed to marry in Oklahoma, and she is off on a pogrom of finding ways to strike out at Gay people.

She wants employees of the courts that follow the law by doing their jobs to be fired for doing their jobs.

She wants businesses to be able to discriminate against GLBT people without any limits.

And, she wants children to be subjected to damaging conversion therapy and for anyone who might object to it, or even openly question it to be punished.

Kids can be sent to conversion therapy for any reason a parent might choose regardless if the reason is for what’s best for the child, or merely because of some misguided motivation.

The boy likes the arts over sports. This is Oklahoma where football is a religion and the arts are for “sissies”.

Reason enough.

Children may not be getting what is best for them, but, rather, may be subjected to the political or religious belief of the uninformed.

Whereas a person of the cloth, a Pat Robertson type, might recommend this therapy for the screwiest of reasons, those who are trained and work impartially with children must be silent or face prosecution.

As a former teacher, Sally Kern should be aware of the dangers of this. She certainly is aware through experience that not all parents can, or will make proper decisions based on correct information or intelligent thought.

State agencies like Child Welfare, the Oklahoma Commission on Youth, the Department of Mental Health, and the Health Department will be kept from intervening or preventing Child Abuse. There will be no oversight of services defined as Conversion Therapy.

And since such therapy has been proven time and again to be ineffective and damaging, and since psychological associations and professionals have deemed it improper, who will the therapists be other than those who claim they have some sort of expertise?

And, who will certify them?

Without inspection and oversight, including the ability to investigate a complaint, children sent to conversion therapy could be exposed to quackery, snake oil salesmen, religious charlatans, and even child abuse and molestation conveniently passed off as therapeutic techniques.

Someone like Sally Kern should know this, or one has to wonder what damage she has done, or has allowed to be done to children who have been in her classes.

If she fails in this, one has to wonder what her next excuse for an attempt at redemption will be.
