The uninformed

During my short-lived Job Lots days I worked with a gentleman who considered himself a true patriot, a proud American.

He drove a well used pick-up truck that was festooned with what he considered patriotic bumper stickers that he placed in more places than just his bumpers. Judging from the small spaces between them, I would have to guess his truck was black.

Most were basically far right-wing slogans, but mixed in with them were those that praised America as the greatest country on earth and the Constitution as the greatest document second only to the Bible.

Many pointed out to those who could not figure it out on their own that he was hardcore American, a true lover of his country.

On patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, you could see him coming down the street far in advance of his arrival by the very large American flag he would affix to a pole at the back of his truck bed that waved proudly in his wake.

When break time conversation slid toward politics, his basic theme was “America. Love it or leave it”. He also had that bumper sticker.

What I found quite ironic, though, was that on one side of the rear window of his truck’s cab he had an American flag on the driver’s side, and on the passenger side a Confederate battle flag of equal size.

I found it a little odd that here in a Northern state where we have monuments to those Union soldiers who fought and died in the Civil War, he found the Confederate flag to be a symbol of patriotism.

The confederate states rebelled against the words of the Constitution and attempted to physically divide “We the People”, even though the majority of citizens in the South had voted against secession while the rich and powerful below the Mason Dixon Line chose to ignore that vote to preserve their fortunes.

I have a hard time accepting that the Star and Bars is patriotic.

This guy I worked with is not unique.

To me, those in the North who fly the Stars and Bars and claim it symbolizes a true love of America, are misguided, perhaps have been easily led, and even, in spite of those “support the troops” bumper stickers and MIA-POW decals, flags, and bumper stickers, show little loyalty to those Northern Troops who saved the Union.
