One would think that a woman who, in spite of her pregnancy coming about as the result of rape, would be praised and protected by the pro-life crowd if she chose to keep the child.

After all, remember those famous quotes on the goodness and Godliness of rape back in the 2012 election cycle where a child of rape was a gift from God?

Pro-life Paul Ryan said that rape was a “method of conception”

Rick Santorum said “As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or doesn’t, it will always be her child. And she will always know that. And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I’ve always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created — in the sense of rape — but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you. As you know, we have to, in lots of different aspects of our life. We have horrible things happen. I can’t think of anything more horrible. But, nevertheless, we have to make the best out of a bad situation.”

Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said, “I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

There was Texan John Cornyn’s, “Richard [Mourdock] and I, along with millions of Americans believe that life is a gift from God. To try and construe his words as anything other than a restatement of that belief is irresponsible and ridiculous.”

Missouri Republican central committee member Sharon Barnes said, “Abortion is never an option. At that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you don’t kill it.”

Nevada Senate candidate Sharon Angle said, “You know, I’m a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.”

To recall a few

But, the mother-to-be might be unmarried, so the child would have been conceived out of wedlock, and would be born to a single, husbandless mother.

This goes against many people’s deeply held religious beliefs.

The First Amendment Defense Act, yes a Republican bill, would prohibit the federal government from taking action against a person acting in accordance with a religious belief.

And, remember, corporations and non-profits are people, so the federal government would not be able to revoke a nonprofit’s tax-exempt status or end a company’s federal contract because or its discriminatory practices.

Although obviously intended to address same sex marriages, since it came about as a result of the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision, according to the ACLU the bill “clearly encompasses discrimination against single mothers” and would cripple the ability of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal body that protects women from sex-based discrimination, to act.

Idaho’s Raul Labrador, who authored the House bill, denied that it could be used this way. “It’s just allowing people to continue to believe the way they do”.

And Bill Flores of Texas said, “We’re not going to try to dance on the head of a pin here. This legislation protects an institution based on its sincerely held religious beliefs from persecution.”

As an aside, it seems that the reference to dancing on pin heads which has been, up until now, related exclusively to angels, is now applicable Republicans with the implication that they are among the angels.

But there have been instances where colleges, which receive federal funds, have fired professors who were pregnant and unmarried because it goes against the beliefs of the religions that run them.

Mike Lee of Utah, who introduced the companion Senate bill, told NPR, “There are colleges and universities that have a religious belief that sexual relations are to be reserved for marriage”, and they “ought to be protected in their religious freedom.”

Asked about this bill earlier this week, John Boehner said, “The Supreme Court’s decision on marriage raises a lot of other questions and a number of members [of congress] have concerns about the issues it raises. No decision has been made on how best to address these.”

The bill could also allow corporations to ignore Obama’s executive order that protects GLBT people from discrimination by federal contractors.

Women who have conceived out of wedlock, even if it was due to sanctified God-chosen rape could be turned away from homeless shelters, counseling programs, and drug treatment programs, and could be fired from their jobs with no way to support their child.

Get an abortion because you were raped, and you can be fired because of someone’s religious beliefs against abortion.

Keep the kid, and the same can happen.
