God loses again

IMAG0087

It seems we have a God problem.

In every presidential election in recent memory, many of the candidates in the Republican Party claim they have been chosen by God to run for office, but each drops out when it becomes clear that, in spite of God’s will, the voters they have appealed to by claiming divine choice reject them.

Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor and Evangelical pastor, is so religious that he admits that, even though he would be president of everyone, even those who do not follow his religion, his faith influences his politics. When it came to running for president he said,

“And whether it’s me or someone else, and I do ask people to pray. For me, this is not just a political or financial decision, it is a spiritual decision. You know, the only thing worse than not being elected president would be to be elected president without God’s blessing. I can’t think of a worse place in the world to be than in the Oval Office without God’s hand upon you. I’d rather not get near the place. But if that’s a purpose, so be it. And that’s my prayer.”

God either rejected his prayers, or the people didn’t believe he was chosen by God

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker claimed his presidential bid was “God’s plan,” and that his political decisions are guided by God, not voters.

“My relationship with God drives every major decision in my life. Our country is at a crossroads and we need a proven conservative leader who is not afraid to fight for what is right — even when it’s not politically expedient. My decisions are guided by my relationship with God — not by what might win me a few votes.”

Before dropping out he had insisted,

“This is God’s plan for me and I am humbled to be a candidate for President of the United States.”

Ben Carson had declared.

“I believe God will make it clear to me if that’s something I’m supposed to do. If God grabbed him by the collar and asked him to run. I feel fingers. But it’s mostly me.”

In the past God has chosen Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachman, Bobby Jindal, and Rick Santorum.

Gone, gone, gone, gone, and gone.

Ted Cruz’s father declared that his son was the anointed one and that,

He’s a man that you can be certain that he will be consistent with the principles, the Judeo-Christian principles, that have made America great and the principles of the Constitution of the United States of America, which are one and the same.

Those principles are what gives every American, every hard-working American who is looking for a way to achieve their dreams, a way to give their children or grandchildren a better life, those are those principles that are the bedrock of America, those Judeo-Christian principles

And he knows that by doing that, he is expressing the love of Jesus Christ to every American. My son Ted believes, like Jesus said, that you must be the servant of all. That is the greatest thing we can do. Ted truly has a servant spirit, he wants to love, to serve We the People, every person in America of every race, color and creed, and just share the love of Jesus Christ with them. It is for the love of Christ and the love of this country that he is running for president.”

Even Heidi, Ted’s wife, claimed that Cruz was running to “show this country the face of the God that we serve.”

And it wasn’t an assumption on her part, it was a divine revelation.

As Ted’s father explained,

“We were on our knees for two hours seeking God’s will. At the end of that time, a word came through his wife, Heidi. And the word came, just saying, “Seek God’s face, not God’s hand.” And I’ll tell you, it was as if there was a cloud of the holy spirit filling that place. Some of us were weeping, and Ted just looked up and said, “Lord, here am I, use me. I surrender to you, whatever you want.” And he felt that was a green light to move forward.”

Even Kenneth Copeland and Glenn Beck said God chose Cruz.

After Indiana, Ted’s out.

And what are we left with?

A multiply divorced and remarried man who attempted to sound like he knew the Bible, but obviously didn’t; a man who obviously has chosen mammon over God; a man who swears and makes salacious remarks about women in general and his own daughter in particular.

Not someone you would think God would choose.

Either God cannot pick a winner, or these candidates who, while thinking they are promoting God, are actually turning people off to Him when it comes to religion as the God of theirs seems to be such a total and consistent failure.

Or, perhaps, when John Boehner revealed Ted Cruz was Satan himself, God withdrew support.

He just didn’t see that until then.
