But, it’s important

We are one Supreme Court Justice short, but the Senate has no time or desire to even talk to the president’s nominee.

Flint, Michigan, is still having water problems, and its children will be living with this problem for life, but the senate has more important things to deal with- things that have a huge influence on the American people.

Senate Republicans are holding hearings on allegations that Facebook keeps conservative news stories out of its Trending Topics section.

U.S. Senator John Thune, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced that he will be holding hearings on Facebook bias.

“Facebook must answer these serious allegations and hold those responsible to account if there has been political bias in the dissemination of trending news. Any attempt by a neutral and inclusive social media platform to censor or manipulate political discussion is an abuse of trust and inconsistent with the values of an open Internet.”

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid’s spokesman, Adam Jentleson, has responded,

“The Republican Senate refuses to hold hearings on Judge Garland, refuses to fund the President’s request for Zika aid and takes the most days off of any Senate since 1956, but thinks Facebook hearings are a matter of urgent national interest. The taxpayers who pay Republican senators’ salaries probably want their money back.”

Facebook, as far as I can tell is for keeping in touch with friends and family in a lump rather than with individual phone calls or letters, posting pictures of food, pictures of vacations and just interesting things, passing on jokes or news stories among friends, and allowing people who have no other outlet, or anyone who cares to hear their opinions, the opportunity to express themselves no matter how asinine they are.

It is social media to keep in touch.

Meanwhile Fox News which has the word “news” in its name seems not to bother the conservative senator when it comes to bias passed on as news.

There has been no credible evidence that Facebook has any bias against Republicans, but that is not stopping the senator and his committee.

It is just one more non-issue that will be investigated at a cost to the taxpayers.

Facebook is a private company. You can join or not. You can read, post, respond, or simply skim by anything on your feed.

But such an investigation is useful in that it will distract from dealing with the nomination of Judge Garland for the Supreme Court, funding the President’s request for Zika aid, and doing anything meaningful about the water in Flint and what is sure to be similar problems arising elsewhere.

Votes have consequences, and for those who say that if their presidential nominee is not chosen they just won’t vote, they’re forgetting the importance of all those other “down ballot” office seekers who may make a difference.
