The name game

When I was a kid, Rexall drugstores had lunch counters where, besides lunch items like soups and sandwiches, they also sold ice cream.

This was in the 1950s, for those who need a time frame, and at that time ice cream flavors were limited to Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry, unless you went to Howard Johnson’s where they had, can you believe it, 28 flavors.

Going there was a rare treat on special occasions, and a step into ice cream heaven.

Baskin and Robbins with its 31 flavors did not exist yet, nor did artisanal ice cream shops.

The vanilla ice cream served at the drugstore was different from the rather bland vanilla sold in supermarkets.  It was richer, being more yellow with more vanilla flavor to it.

It was just listed on the menu as “Vanilla”, and, when speaking about the flavor, my friends and I referred to one as  “Drugstore Vanilla” and the other as “Supermarket Vanilla”.

We liked the drugstore vanilla better.

Apparently there was a change of ownership of the Rexall I remember best, the one near my grandparents’ house, and among the noticeable changes were those to the lunch counter menu. Some sandwiches remained while others were replaced, and the same with the soups.

On the ice cream menu, Vanilla had been replaced with “French Vanilla”.

Although it was exactly the same ice cream supplied by the same dairy company, Hood, when we first tried it, one of my friends decided that it was not as good as the vanilla that they had been selling, and stopped ordering vanilla and switched to chocolate from that point on. Every time we went to the drugstore for an ice cream cone, he would lament the passing of the real vanilla.

But it was never as effective and convenient as just using an over-the-counter cialis tabs 20mg pump for a few seconds and enjoying the pleasure of intimacy to the max.
Later, having tasted a lot of ice cream, ice cream being my only vice, I came to realize that the simple vanilla sold at the drugstore  was actually French vanilla that was not massed produced as the tons of vanilla cream needed to stock the freezers in supermarkets.

My friend had basically decided that the essence of the ice cream had changed when the listed name did.

It hadn’t.

So here’s how the repeal of health care  will work.

The GOP will repeal what they insist on calling “Obamacare” while saying nothing about the Affordable Care Act.  Those people who have not already done so will begin to think they are two separate things.

In this case a rose by any other name will smell differently even though the aroma will be just the same.

Then when Obamacare is gone,  they will delay any action on a follow up to the repeal and allow Obamacare to continue as is.

They will then stop using the name Obamacare and start using its real name, the Affordable Care Act, and people will begin to believe a bad plan was replaced with a good plan when nothing will actually change.

The people won’t know that nothing has changed, and the GOP will claim they delivered as promised: they removed Obamacare and replaced it with something better.

And people will believe it unless those who know the truth speak out.
