It’s okay. He was one of us.

??????????????

I live in a county in Massachusetts where, to hear the county sheriff tell it, we are in some sort of war zone where undocumented immigrants are wandering the streets committing whatever crime is being committed. They are flooding the streets knowing they can get away with it, and, in spite of statistics to the contrary, his proof of this, as he revealed at a recent forum on immigrants at a local law school, are the many phone calls he gets from his friends who verify this.

He justified anti-Muslim animus by citing 9/11 as evidence that terrorism is a Muslim thing, choosing to simply erase the Oklahoma City Bombing from the record of terrorist events that have taken place in the United States. There were, according to his narrative, apparently, no terrorist attacks prior to 9/11, and no further ones took place until the Boston Marathon Bombing.

To justify his attitude toward undocumented immigrants and Muslims, and to show that the refugees from countries where they have suffered at the hand of ISIS are terrorists, he omitted the fact that the OKC Bombing had ever happened and had attempted to cleverly imply that any act of terrorism that took place between the two events he cited as the proof needed to round up brown and non-Christians were perpetrated by those people.

He was careful not to remind the audience that the bomber in Oklahoma City, Timothy McVeigh, was a White Christian.

Mass shootings to him and many of those like him seem only to be done by foreigners here illegally or who are members of the wrong religion, while skipping blithely over the reality that school shootings and those at churches we have seen over the years were done mostly by White people, many of them members of the “right” religion.

When the perpetrators of the actions are not of either of these categories, Brown or Muslim, nothing is mentioned about nationality or religion, and people just make the assumption that they just have to be Muslim, something that could be corrected by the relevant facts , or the story dies quickly.

According to U.S. News and World Report,

“Of the more than 300 American deaths from political violence and mass shootings since 9/11, only 33 have come at the hands of Muslim-Americans. The Muslim-American suspects or perpetrators in these or other attempted attacks fit no demographic profile—only 51 of more than 200 are of Arabic ethnicity. In 2012, all but one of the nine Muslim-American terrorism plots uncovered were halted in early stages. That one, an attempted bombing of a Social Security office in Arizona, caused no casualties”.

We have been conditioned to ignore the possibility that mass killings, or what we automatically label an “Act of Terrorism” until we are corrected, could be committed by the Ku Klux Klan, Mormon extremists, Fourth Reich Skinheads, The Aryan Nation, or any number of militia groups.

We NEED them to be done by Muslims, though. It promotes the politicians’ claims and gives us confirmation for our bigotry.

When the shootings happened a year ago at the Christmas party in San Bernadino CA, we heard constantly about any connection it might have had to Islamic Extremists. When eyewitness accounts differed from the wanted narrative, they were ignored in favor of the opinions of experts.

When Dylan Roof shot up a church, he was a lone wolf with a problem, as was the Sandy Hook shooter.

But if one Muslim commits the same act, he/she represents quite a few million people.

Of approximately 2,400 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil it has been determined that approximately 60 were carried out by Muslims.

Here’s a very current prime example of this Muslim blaming while saying nothing about religion, race, or politics if the person is other than Muslim.

A teacher and a student lost their lives in a horrific murder-suicide at a San Bernardino elementary school Monday. The shooter’s Facebook page had multiple references to God, not Allah, religion and guns, and how Black churches have been too lenient allowing “former gangsters, pimps, hoes and the simple minded” to enter, so that they have become “filled with witchcraft.”

The media hasn’t mentioned his religious affiliation. He was a Christian pastor according to his now blocked FB page.

And whereas, when a lone Muslim, or a small group of them, commits a heinous act, we ask why the millions of other Muslims are not speaking out as we ignore the thousands who do. But in this case, and those perpetrated by Christians in the past, no one is asking about the lack of Christian outrage. As a matter of fact, in the Sandy Hook shooting, those outraged by Muslim killings are doing everything they can to prove what happened didn’t.

On the nightly news, we hear such descriptions of a suspect as “A Black youth” “A Hispanic”, or “an Immigrant”, but when do we hear “A White youth”?

So statistics show that while we are worried about Muslims, it is actually White and in many cases Christian men we should be looking out for.

People like my county sheriff.

This shooting in San Bernadino was not a Muslim, but a Christian pastor.

Outrage?

Quiet at best.
