Student Trump

Back when Johnny Carson hosted the Tonight Show, and he was told something new or obscure he would utter the line that was common among his impersonators,

“I did not know that”.

Here was a man who was meeting important people on a daily basis and had no problem letting people know that he had just learned something new whether it was profound or mundane.

The power of this somewhat self-deprecating line was that people in his audience at the studio or at home watching on TV may have just learned the same thing and saw it was okay for them not to have already known something and that there was no need to be ashamed to acknowledge that they had learned something.

The shorter version of the Carson line used by most people is, “really?”

But now, taking their cue from a man who obviously may be good at real estate but woefully inadequate when it comes to overall knowledge, those who defend President Trump have taken on his tactic to brush aside his not knowing something by claiming that few others knew it either.

It’s a dead give-away that someone has just found out something they should have learned when they were younger when they start a sentence with, “Many (most) people don’t know this, but…..” following this with a piece of information many and most do.

The translation is, “Don’t call me stupid because I don’t know the most common thing. You are all just as stupid as I am, or at least, in spite of reality, I really hope you are.”

Recently in the comments section of a web article, someone proclaimed,

“Most people do not now that Lincoln was a Republican.”

Yes they do. Most elementary school kids know that.

So while Donald Trump was attempting to sound informed, he revealed how little he knew when he informed us, while standing next to the President of France, that France was our oldest ally, and that people don’t know that.

The attempt was to cover his lack of basic knowledge by pretending most other people are ignorant of history, and he was the person educating them.

It backfired even among his supporters who had to have reacted by admitting to themselves that they had had to learn that in school and get the answer correct to pass a test.

He did the same thing with health care.

“Now, I have to tell you, it’s an unbelievably complex subject. Nobody knew health care could be so complicated.”

Yes, they did.

When he does this, he assumes he is successfully hiding his personal inadequacy, but he is actually revealing it.

But, that is something else he does not know.

Most recently he pointed out to the New York Times that it was awkward sitting next to wife of Japan’s Prime Minister at a G20 dinner since she did not know English, not enough to even say
“Hello”.

But the reporter, as well as anyone who paid attention, was aware that she an Melania went on a tour in South Florida and held conversations.

He needs to learn that people do know stuff.
