another self-defeating protest

I am repeatedly amused by those rabid sports fans who will show their disapproval of actions that assault all that is America, even if they are imaginary slights, with the misguided protests that call for the burning of jerseys that are expensive.

The protests last only as long as the shirt burns, or friends and relatives view their Youtube or Facebook postings of the video of the big event, but they are out the shirt and the money they spent on it forever.

When Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City, people burned their KD jerseys as if that would convince him to stay, have him change his mind, or might negatively affect his future games.

He moves on and makes more money, and they are out the money they spent to buy the shirt.

Now they have to spend more money on a replacement jersey they might set on fire in the event the player whose name is on it changes teams.

When Colin Kaepernick took a knee, his shirts went ablaze as did those of the many players who joined him later.

They too are now out the shirt and the money they laid out for it. The NFL and the players lost nothing.

This is not a self defeating protest limited to sports fans, though.

Keurig, the single cup coffee brewer maker, decided to pull its advertising from Sean Hannity’s Fox News show because of Hannity’s interview with Roy Moore, now facing allegations he engaged in sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl and pursued several teenagers while he was in his 30s and working for the District Attorney’s office.

Hannity went too easy on Moore, and practically made excuses for him.

A boycott was called by Hannity’s fans, but if they already own the product, there really is no boycott. The supporters of Hannity and Roy Moore showed their objections to Keurig’s action by recording themselves destroying the coffee makers they already owned, and posting the videos on social media.

So if you gave someone a Kuerig as a wedding, birthday, or Christmas gift, it was not money well spent or a gift properly appreciated if the recipient is one of these people.

However, in response to the boycott, while not saying the decision to pull advertising was the wrong one, Keurig’s CEO Bob Gamgort expressed his concern over how the decision was made known. It was not the way it should have been done. He emailed his employees that though the decision to pause advertising amidst controversy was “business as usual” and, therefore, the correct one, it should not have been included in a tweet.

“The decision to publicly communicate our programming decision via our Twitter account was highly unusual,” he wrote. “This gave the appearance of ‘taking sides’ in an emotionally charged debate that escalated on Twitter and beyond over the weekend, which was not our intent.”

The announcement was made “outside of company protocols” and was “an unacceptable situation that requires an overhaul of our issues response and external communications policies and the introduction of safeguards to ensure this never happens again.”

In this case the messenger was condemned, but not the message.

Regardless, those who smashed their Keurig brewers have declared success, even though, if they loved the convenience of the machine and would like to now go back to using them, they will have to buy a new one after they sweep up the remains of the ones they smashed.

Well played, Keurig. You will now make more money from the purchases of  replacement machines, and the Hannity crowd won’t notice that while you make more money, their boycott will cost them.
