Paul Ryan’s sad Christmas in July

IMAG0177

Call a “wambulance” and get a big shoe ready so the GOP can stomp its foot and whine they just can’t get their way.

They might get their way if it were not based on the wishes of spoiled brats, but they don’t, so they don’t.

When FBI director James Comey came out and said he and his team did not believe that Hillary Clinton broke the law when she set up a personal email server, Paul Ryan threw a royal hissy-fit

Presidential candidates are afforded intelligence briefings so that they will be prepared when they take office, but Ryan wants to deny this to Hillary Clinton when she becomes the official Democratic candidate.

But, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told Ryan in a letter that he

“does not intend to withhold briefings from any officially nominated, eligible candidate.”

Ryan made the request after Clinton was severely criticized by the FBI for her email use, but not punished.

“Nominees for president and vice president receive these briefings by virtue of their status as candidates, and do not require separate security clearances before the briefings,” Clapper wrote to Ryan. “Briefings for the candidates will be provided on an even-handed non-partisan basis.”

Ryan believes

“There is no legal requirement for you (Director of National Intelligence James Clapper) to provide Secretary Clinton with classified information, and it would send the wrong signal to all those charged with safeguarding our nation’s secrets if you choose to provide her access to this information despite the FBI’s findings.”

Of course, Ryan has no problem with his own party’s nominee, Donald Trump, getting security briefings in spite of his habit of posting things on twitter, and the speaker’s own concerns about Trump’s temperament.

So far, in spite of their wish list the GOP had been unable to have any of their accusations against Clinton stick, but rather than just stop, they prefer to whine and look for something else to get her on, and now want to deny her what she should get as a candidate.

They are obsessed.

Just the facts

IMAG0174

So this college kid rapes a drunken co-ed next to a dumpster.  He is caught by two other students, so he cannot get away with it.

The media, be it television, internet, or print did not show his mug shot, which would have us looking at a messy, disheveled rapist, but we were shown what appeared to be a yearbook picture where he is clean, smiling, and wearing a jacket and tie.

He is not what you expect a person to look like who had just raped somebody and had a mug shot taken after he got to the police station.

The first reaction is to want to defend this nice kid next door.

We are then told all about his swimming awards so we will further not judge him too harshly, perhaps even feel sorry for him for some reason.

He gets the weakest possible sentence for this crime, and we are told his father is upset because his life will now be ruined because of twenty minutes of bad activity.

We forget that this twenty minutes ruined his victim’s life, but we are led to believe that since she went and got drunk at a party, she didn’t exactly get something she didn’t deserve.

Later a Black man is shot by a few rogue police officers.

Granted his background is not the best, and we are treated to an old mug shot. Even though he had a family and probably a few nice pictures where he is all nice and clean, we don’t get to see those. We see an old mug shot. And he, like most people in a mug shot, looks a little messed up.

Along with the mug shot, we also see a list of crimes he committed in his earlier life. We are given reasons not to feel sorry that he had been shot dead.

None of the crimes on the list has a bearing on his being shot, but they do make people dislike him.

Not long after, another Black man is shot dead with most of the incident streamed live via cell phone.

He has a respectable position at his place of employment where he has worked since high school, and for all intents and purposes lived as mundane a life as most of us do.

However, while having nothing to show other than a nice picture, and unable to come up with a scary background of crime, that did not stop the attempt to present him as anything but someone for whom we should have sympathy.

We are told he was a suspect in an armed robbery which was not true. We are told he had some minor traffic infractions like a dead headlight, or broken tail light, and some other such infractions that were dismissed in court.

A web site that claims it defends law enforcement promoted the robbery idea on the web, and warned that he might not be as innocent as we might think without explaining why that is the case.

His only crime, and one that would not in any way call for his being shot, is that he is the victim of innuendo.

So we have a person who commits rape treated with kid gloves and sympathetic pictures and descriptions, and in at least one other case a shooting victim who, although innocent of any crime is being presented to the public as someone who might have committed a crime which no one knows about.

Rather than looking at the past of the rogue police officer who shot the latter to see if there should have been any indication that he was capable of the action that took a life, we are being distracted by people hoping to find a justification for it because the victim certainly deserved it.

And, even if he did not deserve to get shot for his action this time, like our mothers justifying  a misapplied act of discipline and explaining it as its being for something we must have done that they just didn’t catch us doing, we seem to be running to that excuse to accept the unacceptable.

Perhaps in fairness, when someone commits a crime we should deal with the crime committed, and if someone is shot we should just deal with what led to the shooting and not look into the mists of time to hopefully find an irrelevant point to justify the shooting.

Home to roost

IMAG0173

Back in 1995 the executive vice-president of the N.R.A., Wayne LaPierre, called federal law-enforcement agents “jack-booted thugs”. He also claimed that, “in Clinton’s administration, if you have a badge, you have the government’s go-ahead to harass, intimidate,  even murder law-abiding citizens.”

His attitude toward law-enforcement was rather clear, and he influenced a lot of people.

He has not retracted those statements, so their affect is still with us.

Ignoring the part of the Second Amendment that mentions a “well regulated militia” the fanatic supporters of an overly broad Second Amendment right to bear any type of arms, claim that people have a right to guns whose sole purpose is to kill a large number of people in order to be ready when the government oversteps its bounds and we need to protect ourselves from it.

No one has bothered to define any terms or even what is meant by the government overstepping its bounds and who determines that.

Apparently, tired of the “jack booted thugs” taking Black lives, twenty-five-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson made his own determination and acted. He did what the NRA keeps telling gun owners they are expected to do. He attacked a governmental entity.

And, although there were many macho good guys with guns keeping an eye on the participants from the side lines, and I don’t mean the police, and even walking with them as allies or “observers”, when the shooting started, instead of being good guys with guns taking on the bad guys with guns, they ran and caused confusion as no one knew if they were the shooters, or were getting ready to participate in some group plot later on during the panic.

They can walk into malls and restaurants, even down public streets, to show they are proud of their right to carry guns and want everyone to know they have them, but when it came time to actually use them in the good guy/bad guy claim they like to proclaim, they ran.

According to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings

“It’s logical to say that in a shooting situation, open carry can be detrimental to the safety of individuals.”

According to Chief David Brown, people running through the shooting scene with rifles and body armor required officers to track them down and bring them to the police department. This could have been time better spent trying to find and stop the shooter.

When Philando Castile, who was licensed to carry a concealed firearm, was shot because, as the officer said through his attorney, he had a gun, the N.R.A. was silent.

When it finally spoke after the Dallas shooting, rather than a strong statement decrying the over reach of a rogue police officer shooting a man with a license to carry, its tepid statement about Philando Castile was,

“The reports from Minnesota are troubling and must be thoroughly investigated. In the meantime, it is important for the NRA not to comment while the investigation is ongoing.”

What was different in this case?
Lack of stimulation in bed is also one of the tadalafil best prices reasons for erectile dysfunction. There are literally millions of women who like having some small talks with cialis on sale their partners after sex. The word “Indigestion” is commonly used to make medicine or consumed directly as a general guide, Parkinson’s appears to affect around 0.2%-0.3% of the general population and appears to affect discount cialis prices seniors more frequently, with about 90% of documented cases being diagnosed in those over sixty years of age.
Why hasn’t the NRA jumped, as they have so many times before, to defend someone legally carrying a firearm?

Usually the NRA speaks out when a police officer, one of the jack booted thugs, questions anyone carrying a gun and brays about the Second Amendment. But this time, it was silent. It failed to come to the defense of a man who had a license to carry his gun and was murdered by a rogue police officer because of that.

Although the NRA claims to speak for gun owners, it has no more than five million members out of one hundred million Americans who live in households with guns. These people own guns for a variety of reasons from sports to self-defense, and support reasonable steps to prevent innocent people, civilians or police, from being killed by gunfire.

The NRA chooses to ignore the ninety-five million.

After the shooting in Dallas, LaPierre, a little too late, expressed

“the deep anguish all of us feel for the heroic Dallas law enforcement officers who were killed and wounded, as well as to those who so bravely ran toward danger to defend the city and the people of Dallas.”

When someone finally acted on his call to defend yourself from “the government’s go-ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law-abiding citizens” he had to change his tune and appear more rational by making that statement.

He needed to cover up that for which he is responsible.

Open Carry did nothing to help stop the mass shooting of police officers in Dallas. It had the opportunity to justify its existence, but it failed.

And, it added to the danger.

Major Max Geron of the Dallas Police Department pointed out,

“There was also the challenge of sorting out witnesses from potential suspects, Texas is an Open Carry state, and there were a number of armed demonstrators taking part. There was confusion on the radio about the description of suspects and whether or not one or more was in custody.”

The only way to have kept Texans of any stripe from attending the demonstration armed would have been to determine that certain people could openly carry without limit, while others could not, and that while some could carry anywhere, others couldn’t.

Now, it turns out, the NRA will not jump to the defense of any gun carrying person shot for merely carrying their gun legally,  but will find a way to hold back if the person is not from the right group.

The NRA’s true colors came shining through this past week.

Contradiction? What contradiction?

Bush’s Lap Dog

IMAG0170

The Chilcot Commission in Britain has released its report examining the events leading up to the Iraq War. The investigation took seven years.

Our investigation in the United States was substituted with chants of “U,S,A, U.S.A!”

It concluded that Tony Blair chose to go with flawed intelligence while ignoring more peaceful options, and the faulty intelligence came from President George Bush.

As a result Blair, promoted the involvement in Bush’s war based on false and exaggerated statements.

He, like Bush, went into the war inadequately prepared for what would come after, even though advisors told him that an invasion could have negative consequences, and could result in an increase in terrorism.

In 2002, while real and imagine reasons for an invasion were being presented to the public, including the United Nations, Tony Blair wrote to Bush,

“I’ll be with you, whatever.”

“Whatever” is too open an agreement to have troops face an enemy in combat especially when the enemy is not the right one.

Mr. Blair has regrets about it all, oh, except the part about dead soldiers and dead civilians.

“I express more sorrow, regret, and apology than you can ever believe,” Blair responded to the report.

He also insisted the British soldiers who died during the military action had not sacrificed their lives in vain.

But for what?

In this country the desire to end the dying and bring the troops home has been met with the platitude that if we bring the remaining soldiers home from a wrongful war, we will be turning our backs on those who have already died, or have been maimed.

So apparently the thought is that we just keep sending troops  into the war so that more will die, and then we have to be respectful ad infinitum.

Somethings  seems wrong about this thinking.

New Rule

IMAG0167

It happened, and right on cue and as expected.

After yet another investigation, no evidence was found that would be strong enough for the FBI to recommend the Department of Justice file charges against Hillary Clinton because of some poor judgment when it came to emails.

Poor judgment is not a violation of law.

But, Come one!

For twenty-four years the people who do not like Hillary have been trying to get her on something, and now they have to find something else.

They even tried to claim that Bill’s infidelity was somehow her fault, but the multiply married guys who had cheated on their many wives just couldn’t get that to stick either.

A nonpolitical rumination

IMAG0165

Although it has been rather uneven, I would have to say after some deep reflection that by and large my life has been pretty good.

It may not have been the one the almighty planned for me, and it may have been made of a quite a few roads not taken because of good and bad decisions, but at the end of it I should be able to say that it went pretty well.

I have made mistakes, but I have also accomplished things that have made the lives of others better.

So, when the final days are approaching, keep that in mind.

Wherever I spend my last days, please do not speak to me in one of those up-swing high and slow patronizing voices that are usually reserved for puppies and small children. Speak to me as if I am the adult I am.

Don’t use the imperial we. I appreciate that you want to know if we had a BM today, but really, I will be more concerned if I had one, and probably not all that interested in whether or not your bowels moved.

And, please, do not assign me busy work to do so that it becomes obvious you want to keep me busy until I die with no desire that I just might accomplish something meaningful.

My grandfather was a tinkerer. He could disassemble and reassemble just about anything so long as he stayed methodical.

After my again asking why the cuckoo clock in my grandparents’ hall never made a sound when the bird popped out, one day while I as visiting, my grandfather decided we would find out why.

The hall in their house went from the front door back to the kitchen, and one day my grandfather took the clock down, and, laying it by the front door, took the clock apart piece by piece lining the parts in order from the front door to the kitchen. Once this was done we looked carefully at every piece until we saw that there was a small tear in the small bellows that was supposed to give voice to the bird.

After applying a small piece of packing tape to the tear, we reassembled the clock piece by piece from the kitchen to the front door, and, after re-hanging the clock on the wall, moved the hands until they reached 12:00, and the bird came out and spoke.

My grandfather was no clock maker, and he had never worked on a cuckoo clock before, but his being methodical paid off.

Years later when Alzheimers was still a bit of mystery, my grandfather went to the hospital because he was acting odd and had injured himself. I went to visit him with my mother, and when we arrived, he was sitting in a wheelchair that had an attached tray, and he was untying a knot in a wash rag. As the nurse was talking to my mother, my grandfather finished untying the knot, and after he handed it the nurse she retied the knot and handed it back to him. He shot her a quizzical look, shrugged his shoulders, and untied the knot a second time.

Again he handed it to the nurse who, while still explaining things to my mother, retied the knot and handed the wash rag back to my grandfather. I had never heard my grandfather curse, but when he was handed the knotted cloth he looked at the nurse and said, “What the hell? If you want a knot in it then don’t hand it to me to untie it. I you don’t want a knot, stop tying it into one.”

And with that he laid the cloth on his little table. H was done with this.

Not long after this he told the nurse he had to use the bathroom, and she walked him to the one that was nearby. He entered, closed the door, and we heard him throw the lock. He was in there long enough to start us worrying, and then we became a little alarmed when we heard the sound of small pieces of metal hitting the floor. Alarmed, the nurse called for security who arrived with a maintenance man who proceeded to remove the hinge pins from the door. When the door was removed, there was my grandfather sitting on the floor by the sink hand tightening the bolt on one of the pipes. He turned and proudly announce, “There, that should do it. The dripping was driving me crazy.”

However, the medication must be order viagra usa taken by those men who have desire to do sex.
The maintenance man noted that there was now no drip.

Years later, when Alzheimer was more widely understood, my grandmother had to be placed in an assisted living setting. This was a place where moneyed people got private rooms while people like my grandmother shared a large room with three other people, each of whom had their own corner area, and where each person was allowed to set up their space with familiar objects and pieces of furniture.

Besides communal meals, the residents had daily group activities like bingo and some of those other patronizing activities that for some had to have a built in degree of humiliation.

Once a week they would all get on a mini-bus and go to the the Council on Aging center for activities with people from other similar settings.

One day my mother got a call to come to “the home” because my grandmother was out of control.

Fearing the medical worst my mother and I rushed to the place, and upon arrival and heading for my grandmother’s room, we were told the problem wasn’t inside the building, but inside the bus outside.

After weeks of the Wednesday trips to the COA center, my grandmother had apparently gotten upset that they were merely going to another location to do something just as useless as what they had been doing at their residence. Why were they going to some building to make knit potholders when they had no kitchen privileges?

My grandmother had suggested they all go to the nearest mall so they could walk around and see the people and see what was in the stores. Many of the other inmates agreed with her. So, when all but one of them was on the bus, and the driver went to assist the last person on, my grandmother had apparently closed the door, and having seen the driver do it, looped the piece of rope with the hook on it around the door opener so the door could not be opened from the outside no matter how strongly you pulled on it.  She was refusing to unlatch the door until it was agreed they would go to the mall.

They apparently expected my mother to talk her out of the rebellion, but my mother asked why they couldn’t go to the mall and walk around if that is what all the ladies in the bus wanted, and from their encouraging cheers to my grandmother’s rebellion, they obviously wanted to.

They lied to my grandmother, who upon opening the door was escorted off the bus and walked into the building.

She was kept back, while the bus went off to a day of potholder making.

When my time comes remember this, and sit me in front of a computer. I may not accomplish anything, but I might. But please don’t give me knots to untie, or potholders to make. The latter would be the height of irony as in my pre-dotage years I generally use the microwave or call for take-out.

today

juky

Without the humanist civilians, the ones who believed in the equality of all humans beings, today would just be a Monday.

Let’s not turn our backs on them in exchange for jingoism.

This day we celebrate all Americans.

I would like to wish a Happy Fourth of July to all my friends, those I know personally, those I know from the internet, and those I have come to know through third party contacts.

I would like to thank you for all you do to make sure every citizen has all the Creator endowed rights of which Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are only examples from a much more extensive list, and who attempt to make sure all the rights guaranteed in the Constitution apply to all Americans whether we like them or not.

“We The People” has no qualifiers, neither does “All Men”.

I would like to thank the police officers and fire fighters who work their whole careers to keep us safe in our homes and persons.

I want to thank all those who fight for the rights of individuals, minorities, the homeless- both adult and child-, the sick, the disenfranchised, the poor, the GLBT Community, who face obstacles on a daily basis, but keep at it because the goal is a good one.

I want to thank those who give of their time to try to guarantee we elect people who are interested in what is best for the people who elect them, and not for those who pay for them.

I want to thank the lone actor who sees something wrong and tries to do something about it. Whether that person succeeds or fails, no action ends without some progress, progress that others can build on.

I want to thank the unsung hero who doesn’t get any plaque or any applause in the airport, but too often gets pushed away because someone is offended they would be nice to society’s rejects.

I want to thank those who do little things for their fellow man, because when all is said and done, the world is made of little men who need each other to live good and productive lives.

Happy Fourth of July, my fellow citizens.

Thanks for what you do, whether noticed or not.

We all make a difference, and we all need each other for the short time we are here.

As my mother used to advise, “Go get yourself a Hot Fudge Sundae.”

You deserve it.

And, thanks
