face palm moment

Growing up Catholic in the 1950s and attending an elementary school run by nuns, Brides of Christ in the old habit where only their faces showed, I was exposed to the negative attitudes directed towad all things not Catholic.

At Christmas, we were not allowed to sing “Away in the Manger” because Martin Luther wrote it.

Regardless of the reason for doing so, weddings, and funerals for example, we were told entering a Protestant church would bring us close to damnation, especially if it was an Episcopal one- that whole Henry VIII thing.

And when it came to Muhammadans” (Muslim today), they hot what they deserved during the Crusades being as they were the anti-Christ/

Oddly, however, when it came to history class and the Crusade business, in order to know the mind of the enemies of Christ, the nuns taught us all about Islam and the Pillars of that faith- adherence to the faith, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the pilgrimage- all somehow bad things because, well, it wasn’t Catholic.

Granted it was done to show Mohamed had ripped off Christianity, but here were conservative Catholic nuns having no problem teaching the Pillars and making them a question on quizzes

Today even saying you heard about them in school has people up in arms.

I remember when I lived in the Buckle of the Bible Belt legislation was passed to outlaw applying Sharia Law in the states courts because those laws applied to a specific religion while at the same time the same legislators were defending the erection of the “Protestant version” of the 10 Commandments on the State House lawn and spending taxpayer money to cover the cost of the legal fight. No one was trying to apply Sharia in the courts, but there were Christians fighting to force one version of the 10 Commandments on everyone, Protestant or not.

Unthinking and knee-jerk Islamophobia has gotten so insane that in a poll asking if students should be taught Arabic numerals in public school, more than half the respondents said “no”, with some preferring students learn American and/or Roman numbers like they always have.

A poll by The Brookings Register, a newspaper in South Dakota, polled its online readers with the question,

“Should schools in America teach Arabic Numerals as part of their curriculum?

The results had 29% saying yes, 14% holding no opinion, and 57% saying NO.

Obviously this is a result of the unreasonable Islamophobia sweeping the country as the numbers we use in the United States are Arabic numerals.

The preferred number of some of the respondents would seem to be those Xs, Ms, Cs, and Ls that Julius Caesar used in his day, and the Super Bowl, book publishers in their forwards, and movie maker when dating a film productions use today.

Sister Leoncius would have whacked our knuckles with a ruler had we been that stupid.
