gaslighting

Gas lighting is a form of intimidation  where false information is presented to the victims so they doubt their own memory, perception and ,often, their sanity. It involves withholding factual information from the victims while providing false information so as the victims becomes anxious, confused, and less able to trust their own memory and perception so their thinking can be molded and their decisions controlled.

The term comes from the 1944 movie “Gaslight” about a woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing that she is going insane by secretly and repeatedly dimming and brightening the gaslights in the house while accusing his wife of imagining the lights are flickering to instill self-doubt in order to distract her from his criminal activities.

Donald Trump is the husband and we, the American people are, in his case, his fourth wife.

Although only congress can declare war, and to do so must be made aware of the intelligence that would justify it, Trump claims Iran has committed certain actions that warrant ships and troops be sent there, while producing no proof of this other than his own words.

Even though he says things publicly and on tape, Trump continually tells us he never did, and, by telling lies at every opportunity, it becomes confusing as to what is true and what isn’t.

His lies and misdirection are his go to tactic to support his policies and actions.

He supports his wall idea by making up immigration figures that are provably wrong.

He promotes his popularity with inflated crowd figure.

He panders to the Evangelicals by coming up with horror stories about abortion, like parents and doctors deciding after birth if a child should live.

He said he didn’t fire James Comey because of the Russia investigation, but he bragged to Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov,

“I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job…I faced great pressure because of Russia.

He then told Lester Holt in a televised interview that he fired Comey because of “this Russia thing.”

He is wearing us down and getting us to the point where he hopes we give up on fact checking, and will just let him to do what he wants.

While farmers are suffering under the tariff war they continue to support him because, because, why?

People buy Trump’s claim that he is against socialism while he asks for billions of dollars to subsidize the farmers whose suffering he has caused.

And he assures us that China will be paying the cost of the tariffs, not the American consumer, even as we know that to be false.

Now he wants to go after Iran, much, I am sure, to the satisfaction of Israel and Saudi Arabia who would love to have us fight a war for them.

He has this obsession with that country and declaring the Iran Deal was the worst deal ever made, and, upon cancelling it, gave that country the go-ahead to develop nuclear weapons, something they were verifiably not doing under the deal.

When Barack Obama was facing re-election Trump claimed that:

“In order to get elected, Barack Obama will start a war with Iran.”

“Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin – watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate.”

“I predict that President Obama will at some point attack Iran in order to save face!”

“Remember that I predicted a long time ago that President Obama will attack Iran because of his inability to negotiate properly-not skilled!”

“Obama’s nuclear deal with the Iranians will lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. It has to be stopped.”

With ships being sent to the waters near Iran, and with rumors that troops might also be sent, Trump first dismissed the idea claiming,

“I think it’s fake news, OK?”

But then saying of the rumored number of 20,000 troops,

“Now would I do that? Absolutely. But I have not planned for that. If we did that, we’d send a hell of a lot more troops than that.”

And as time goes on and his gaslighting intensifies  we will be screaming “U.S.A! U.S.A.!”, waving flags in patriotic frenzy, renaming common food items, and competing with who is more American than anyone.

And maybe Trump will get re-elected.
