When speaking about education funding aimed at improving elementary school reading outcomes, Republican Mississippi State Representative Gene Alday said, “I don’t see any schools hurting. “[Mississippi] has a lot of bad school districts…I come from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call ‘welfare crazy checks.’ They don’t work.”

The reaction to this rather racist comment met with a lot of disapproval, even from his own party members, but Alday says that his remark was taken out of context, and the reporter he had talked to “made me look like a fool.”

He claims that when he made the remark he had told the reporter to keep it off the record.

Anyone who is being interviewed by a reporter in any media format, myself included, knows that the only way to keep something off the record is to not say it.

Governor Phil Bryant, a Republican, Speaker of the House Philip Gunn, also a Republican, and State Republican Party Chairman Joe Nosef condemned the remark with the governor saying, “I strongly reject his comments condemning any Mississippian because of their race. Those days are long past.”

Alday also defended his remarks by saying, “It was late at night and he called me”.

Apparently there is a part of the day when you cannot say racist things, and another part when you can.
