In Georgia a “wife beater” is more than a thug’s undershirt.

Just as with a magician who wants you to look where he needs you to, or a ventriloquist who needs you to look at the dummy so you do not see his lips move when pronouncing a challenging word, the religious right is using misdirection so that people who want to believe in it will not see what they are not meant to see.

Using the distraction of a decoy threat of Sharia law and a supposed threat to the American way of life if Gay Americans are allowed their Creator endowed rights, these religious right people have been working hard to have their own version of Sharia supplant US laws, and to have women subjugated by the religious right’s most powerful constituency, old, white males.

You see, part of their claim to be fighting for “religious freedom” is actually their wanting to be in charge and using their religion as the way to get there.

What’s worse is that the religious right is distracting women and getting their support, not by talking about the reality of what they are doing, but by harping on Sharia and Gays.

Ephesians 5:22-24: Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

That is why as Republicans in Georgia are ready to pass Senate Bill 129, the Georgia Religious Freedom Restoration Act, that would allow businesses and individuals to openly discriminate against others, “others” being the word that distracts Christian women who will go along with the bill because of the fear of the threat of the other, the bill also will allow for domestic abuse against wives and children, all in the name of “religious freedom” with which, I am sure many, if not most Georgia women would not agree.

The bill states, “laws neutral toward religion may burden religious exercise as surely as laws intended to interfere with religious exercise,” and the “government shall not substantially burden a person’s exercise of religion” without a “compelling governmental interest” and by the “least restrictive means of achieving that compelling governmental interest.”

But it holds that a religious exercise as a “practice or observance of religion does not have to be central to a system of religious belief”. It can be one’s personal interpretation of a religious idea.

Conservative district attorneys in two Georgia counties oppose the bill because it would give child abusers and wife beaters a religious defense.

It relaxes the arterial wall, leading to decrease in pulmonary pressure and resistance. low priced cialis Also, it can boost carbohydrate tolerance and cheapest cialis in australia reduce blood sugar level. There are cases where people use their religious views to impede an investigation into child-endangerment and child-abuse charges.

The pending law defines religious exercise as anything that is practiced by a person’s religion, and in light of Ephesians 5:22-24, a man can say he abused his wife and children because the Bible says it is allowed, if not encouraged.

The Bible makes it clear that women are supposed to serve their husbands, so he just has to say that he was disciplining his unsubmissive wife. He was practicing his freedom of religion.

Then there’s
Proverbs 23:13-14: Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die. Punish him with the rod and save him from death.
Proverbs 13:24: Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

Let the beatings begin.

And under the law, whatever the results of the beating have to be excused because the man was just doing what the Bible advises.

So, while doing what they can to allow discrimination against GLBT people, the senators in Georgia are exposing the women and children of the state to harm.

And to complicate things, the Senate cannot modify the bill to ban this because they will then be attacking people’s free exercise of their religion which goes against the supposed purpose of the bill.

What a tangled web.
